What the…?
Today, because no one else was willing to, I had to explain to my uncle that he's white, that I'm not his grandfather, and that he's mentally challenged. FML

Collection
Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, I had to explain to my grandmother why, "What a nice singing voice! He doesn't sound black at all!" is not a compliment. FML
Today, I had to slowly and very seriously explain to my mother why there is no 'White History Month'. I can't believe we are actually related. FML
Today, I had to explain to my grandfather that Canadians aren't evil by reminding him that he's Canadian. FML
Today, I had to explain to multiple people that even though I'm white, I have no interest in joining a hate group. FML
Today, after I found out my uncle took me off my grandma's funeral program, I had to fight to speak. He spent the week taking out his jealousy and anger on me and my sister for being included in her funeral. To everyone else he's played the saint, and the whole family has no idea. FML
Today, as an adult, I finally got to meet my great-grandfather. I had no idea he was still alive, since my parents and even my grandpa never told me. When we met, I found out why my family like to pretend he doesn't exist: This senile 93-year-old is by far the most racist person I've ever encountered in my life. FML
Today, I met my "grandson". Even though my son and his wife are both lily white, the child was clearly half-black. I pulled my son aside to have a word, but he said, "Her grandmother was black and she has recessive genes, it's really rare." I can't believe I raised this dumbass. FML
Today, I was at the gym, when I saw my uncle at the front desk. I quietly went up behind him and slapped him hard on the back while yelling "What's up, loser?!" He turned around. It wasn't my uncle. FML
Today, my grandfather was counting all the grandchildren he had and saying how fortunate he was to have all of us. When I pointed out that he'd forgotten to count me, he turned and said, "You're adopted, you don't count as a real grandchild." FML
Today, while at my aunt's funeral, my grandma who has terrible memory loss asked me whose funeral we were at. I had to explain to her that her daughter had died. FML

C'mon, Grandpa, go with it! If he's mentally challenged, you'll just frustrate him trying to bend him to the truth. Use your superior intellect to improvise his vision of his world. It'll be fun for you and make him happy. Give him Life Savers and take him to football games. That's what my grandpas did for me.

Somehow, I think that, in context, this would make even less sense.

I honestly think that, with context, it would make even less sense.

Sounds like a challenging conversation. - No, uncle, come here, sit on my lap and I'll tell you that you're not african-american, I'm not your grandfather, and you're a bit of a challenge for the rest of us... I wish you the best of luck!🤗

Sounds like the opposite version of Chappelle’s Show skit about Clayton Bigsby, a blind black man who also happened to be a leader in the white-supremacy movement. Only in this version your white uncle aspires to be a black panther… OK, the real situation isn’t really funny. I assume Uncle either has dementia or is seriously mentally challenged. Frankly I’m not so sure it’s worth the effort trying to convince someone of the truth if they are incapable of learning, understanding, and retaining that information. Sometimes it’s probably just easier to humor the delusions if they are incapable of understanding and retaining the information. I assume you know if Uncle has always been like this or if it’s dementia. I am very sorry, I cannot imagine how awful this is to deal with. My step mother had Alzheimer's. It came on slowly but inevitably. Fortunately no one in my genetic heritage had that - It sometimes runs in families.
