Today, while serving a rather large party at the restaurant where I work, I mentioned that the soup of the day was "to die for". After the hosts gave me weird looks, it dawned on me that the reason they were wearing all black is because they've just come back from a funeral. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
All dressed up
Today, an elderly man came into my place of work wearing a nice suit. I commented, saying said he looked nice and asked what the special occasion was. He was going to a funeral. FML
Today, at the funeral home where I work, I asked my boss if it was time to "bring out the stiff". I didn't realize the guy's family was not only in the building, but within earshot as well. FML
Today, I was working at a soup kitchen with people from my church. Seeing a rather disheveled couple, I told them the line started "over there". Only then did I realize that they were from my church, and were there to help serve soup. FML
Today, I was at work. I work at a grocery store and a woman pulls a cart to me filled with chips, breads, lunch meats, and sodas. I said to her "Looks like you are going to have a fun party" she then looks at me and says "My mother just died, this is for after the funeral. FML
Today, I went out for dinner with some friends to a new restaurant. As I was finishing the soup, I noticed a small curly hair at the bottom of the soup. The chef is bald. FML
Lost in translation
Today, one of the Haitians that works in the kitchen at my restaurant said something to me. Usually I can't understand them and I just smile and laugh, so that's what I did this time. Later, I found out he was trying to tell me his father had passed away. FML
Today, I attended the funeral of a close friend. Most of the other guests were openly grinning and joking around, and the guy in front of me kept muttering, "That's what she said!" during the eulogy. FML
Today, I went to work in my best outfit for the big corporate party we were having later in the day. When I arrived, my boss said, "You missed one hell of a party yesterday!" Shit. FML
Today, at work, I served a customer who looked so much like my grandma that I thought it actually was her. Then I remembered she died 6 months ago. I had to serve customers with a smile on my face while choking back tears for the rest of the day. FML
Classic blunder
Today, I serve at church and had a funeral. As I greeted the family, someone asked how I was doing. Without thought, I responded, "Good to be alive." FML

#71: Reminded them? Yeah, I'm sure they had forgotten all about their loved one at that point. I know right after a funeral, I'm always all, "Grandma who? Fuckit, let's go eat."

I've gone out to eat numerous times after a funeral. It gives everyone a breath of fresh air to be around people you love after you've lost someone. It's actually good bonding. What a better way to spend time with family than to eat? That's how I see it anyway.

A lot of times our family rents a hall and has a catered dinner after a funeral in order to spend more time together when everyone is in town, to comfort each other, and to further celebrate the life of the person who has just died. Going to a restaurant to do this instead does not strike me as odd, especially if it was just a subgroup of persons who had just come from the funeral, particularly if they were not as close with the person who had just died. FYL for an embarrassing/awkward moment, but at least it was little, and you don't know the people so they can't bring it back to haunt you. (no pun intended)

How about just not calling soup to die for anymore? It's soup.

Ha! I was eating soup when I read this and almost choked on it laughing. I gave it a dirty look and told it it's just soup. I'm going to get some salad.

you need to expand your soup experiences. a great gumbo or (pardon me Iif the spelling is wrong here) albundigas soup is, to say the least, "to die for." as for the OP. I don't perceive this as being inconsiderate as I doubt the mourners would assume you knew they were mourners. it would have been different if you had been in the party and made the comment.

My family is a little different than most at funerals- i.e.- we cry and are sad, but we will usually end up laughing and joking for one reason or another. When my uncle died, we went to a hotel for a dinner after the viewing hours. We were all joking, laughing, having a good time, and our hostess mentioned she was glad to see extended families getting together and sharing quality time around the holidays (a week before Christmas). Everyone at the table became quiet. My poor aunt looked at the hostess and told her it was a funeral dinner. The poor hostess had a priceless look on her face. She was beyond mortified at her mistake, and then a little more mortified when we started laughing about the mistake. Sometimes big mistakes are easy to make!

Wait, what's a funeral doing at a restaurant?!
