Today, the driver side mirror of my car was smashed off and laying on the ground. On the window was a $75.00 ticket for improper equipment for not having a mirror. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Don't look back
Today, I took my car to a car wash, and when I got it back, one of the rearview mirrors was missing. Someone knocked it off and the management refuses to cooperate on who was the thief. FML
Dad, stop driving my car
Today, my dad was looking for something in the garage and accidentally knocked over a heavy box, which crushed the new side view mirror I'd bought for my car, because the one my car originally had, he smashed it against a pole while driving my car recently. FML
Today, I had my first accident in 5 years of driving. I clipped a Ford Fiesta, mirror to mirror. His mirror is totally destroyed. Mine is fine. I was so stressed afterwards that I reversed straight into another car. FML
Today, I was stopped in traffic when a woman rear-ended me, backed up, and sped off along the shoulder, taking my passenger side mirror with her. FML
Probably a Monday
Today, running late for work, I ran outside and the door handle literally broke off my vehicle when I pulled to open it. I climbed in through the passenger door, turned on my car, and the windshield wipers were on… swiping a fresh $78 parking ticket across my windshield. FML
Today, I received a ticket for not having my headlights on. The cop who pulled me over had a broken headlight. FML
Glassed
Today, the driver's side window of my car was busted, and inside was a note that said, "Sorry, thought this was my car." FML
Today, I was pulled over and given a ticket for a broken tail light. On the way to the mechanic. To get my tail light fixed. FML
Today, I broke my mirror off going to the drive-through at McDonald's. Even the cashier watching was like, "Fuck, dude." FML
Slow moving accident
Today, I got into an accident, driving pretty slowly on a left turn signal trying to avoid a curb, sticking it out for too long, breaking a car's sideview mirror and causing scratches. The police was called. I have to appear in court for a misdemeanour for my first offence ever. Good bye student visa. FML

I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one who broke it off.

you probably should've taken a picture, but still try to fight the ticket.

Looks like somebody needed to get their quota.

Word. Also, I wouldn't bet on getting anything out of contesting it. Unless you actually have witnesses to the act, you can't prove a thing, and who's not to say they might get paid off either... =/ (FYL)

exactly what I was thinking

I strongly doubt this FML. A car that is parked is not in traffic. It is only in traffic that you need the mirror. You could put any pile of junk in a parking spot. And what says that the owner of the vehicle would not put a proper mirror in place before leaving with the car? Again, I don't beleive it.

Actually, I *think* that the statuates (at least in the states I've checked) state than any car on the *street* has to meet the operational conditions. So parked on the street, you need to be capable of driving it. Parked in your driveway, it doesn't matter. Doesn't make the cop not a jerk, though.

I agree with #10. In New York, even if your car has been parked for months, if it's on the street and it doesn't have all standard criteria(mirrors, lights, plate, etc) you WILL get fined because it's not considered safe. Again, even if it's been parked for months. Parking not he streets is open to all, so therefore it needs to be safe and standard to drive

I agree with #4.. Your car can have expired insurance, broken lamp, no windshield or no wheels, the cops fine you for anything if you're not driving it.

Not entirely true. Lots of municipalities have rules on the books regarding "what is allowed to park on the pubic streets", and often times "current registration/inspection/insurance" are requirements. Mostly, it's to ensure that people don't park their unregistered jalopy on the street and leave it there for months at a time. I admit it's unlikely that THIS particular case is codified in municipal code, but don't make blanket judgements like what you're describing, because it will only work out badly for you when you discover how wrong you are. ;-)

If it's not in a driveway the cop's *entirely reasonable* assumption is that it's going to get driven somewhere. You're just lucky that you didn't have to take it out on the road. In MD driving without a drivers side mirror counts as reckless driving. which is *awesome.*

If a cop can assume things to fine you, it's an insult to any democratic society. What protection do you have as an individual? If you park a car that don't meet standards to be used in traffic, you can always get a trailer to remove it. A police officer should not have the right to ASSUME that you will drive it. If you park a pile of junk in the street, you should always have the opportunity to remove it yourself or have it removed at your expense if you don't act on a warning. I doubt this FML, and will continue to do so. We're talking about the US, the land of the free, home of the brave (but maybe also the home of the oppressed...)

Didn't you ever learn that democracy and justice are an illusion? ESPECIALLY when it comes to cops trying to give someone a ticket. Just because the cop has no right to assume it doesn't mean they won't. The police is corrupt, like every other human organization in the world.

Actually, if its in public you can, like I got a ticket cus I parked a my car,(which I was gonna sell) in front of my house and since they're were no plates on it I got a ticket, so this FML could be true.

I would what someone else here mentioned. Take pictures of the mirror lying on the street next to the car and fight it. It sucks that some jerk was careless enough to smash it off, but to get a ticket for that as well is lame. good luck! I know mirrors can be pricey to replace if you need the whole new housing unit to, depending on what kind of car you have!
