Today, over a year on from my parents telling me my dog had died, I went to the shelter to volunteer, and saw my old dog. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I found the dog I lost while I was dog sitting. It was with its new adoptive family. FML
Brief encounter
Today, I decided to adopt a 11 year-old dog that had been in need of a home for several months. Two hours after I got him home, I discovered him dead in the backyard. FML
Today, I saw my dad for the first time in almost five years, at his funeral. FML
Today, my new dog unburied my old dog and chewed on his bones. FML
Today, at the rescue group I volunteer at, we finally adopted out a dog that has been with us for a few years now. This was an amazing thing for us because we never thought he'd get adopted. As we were getting excited and hugging each other, the dog ran away. FML
Today, I returned home from college for the first time in a month. I went to my bedroom and found a nice gift bag on my dresser. Thinking it was a Valentine's gift, I opened it. My dog's ashes were in a tin inside. This is how I found out my dog died since I was away. FML
The Rainbow Bridge
Today, at my job at a pet store, my boss told me to go outside and hand out flyers. I saw a man sitting on a bench and walked up, saying, "Hi! Do you have a pet?" He teared up and said, "I just put her down this morning." FML
Am I the asshole?
Today, for National Pet Day, we had a pet show and tell at work. A colleague of mine showed us a picture of her lemon tree. I remember she had a dog and wondered why she didn’t bring him, so I asked why didn’t she show her dog. Turns out he passed away a month ago. She burst into tears and ran off. FML
That's just cruel
Today, my mom told me to go meet a rescue dog. After doing all my research and emailing shelters left and right, I finally got a call. It went well! Then, my mom told me it would never happen. I'm still expecting several emails from the shelters I contacted, so I get to relive this pain. FML
Today, I took my 17 year-old dog, who had been my best friend my entire life right from when I was born, to be euthanised. I had booked in advance. The vet ambled in all spritely and cheerfully asked, "Just here for a checkup, aye?" FML

You should keep dropping hints about how this one dog looks particularly like your old one until they confess.

To those of you telling the OP to bring the dog home, you're all stupid. If the OP brings the dog home against his parents wishes, then the parents will dump it again or worse. Get it through your thick skulls. The parents DO NOT WANT this dog and it is their home. The problem is not that they surrendered a dog they didn't want. The problem is that they lied to the OP about it.

You stfu, asshole. It's a statement of fact. The fact is that this couple does not want this dog. For the OP to bring it back to the home is to risk them doing something worse than re-dumping it. When I was a kid, we had neighbors who had a dog that, while cute as a puppy, grew into an annoying, dirty pest. The parents were fed up but their little girl was crazy about him. Instead of taking him to a shelter, they dumped him across down and told the little girl he ran away. A couple of months later, the mother was horrified to hear the little girl squealing exictedly, "Muffin! You're back!" Sure shooting, the rotten thing had found its way home. The next day, Muffin was dead. I was about 8 at the time but even I figured out right away that the parents had killed the dog. This is not to say that the OP's parents would murder the dog if the OP dragged it home again. The point is that the OP lives with his or her parents and, right or wrong, parents call the tune in their own homes, so the dog would only be making a U-turn back to the shelter. We are back to the sin being the lie, not the getting rid of the dog. Again, stunned by the level of stupidity demonstrated by most people here. If the parents want to take the dog to a shelter, that's their right as the homeowners and the parents. You all expect to call the tune in the homes you own or hope to own, don't you? Why do you think this couple doesn't have the same right? Just because you would have kept the dog does not mean they were wrong to get rid of him and at least they took him to a shelter and didn't dump him across town or kill him. However, they were wrong to lie to the OP. It would have been much better to say, "OP, we know you love Fido but he is ruining the house and requires too much care and we do not want him, so we are taking him to a shelter where he has a chance at finding a home with a family who won't mind his doggy stink and messes." They didn't want the drama with the OP, which they now have anyway, so it would have been better to just be up front.

parents seem to have this sick mindfuck every time they grow tired of the pets. get rid of them when the kids gone! my cat hat four lovely kittens, also she had a ginger Tom who was her brother. I was on a school trip and when I came home I ran outback happily looking for my cats and kittens. all gone!! they gave them away!

I don't think parents see it as a mindfuck; I think they see it as a "we are the parents, we own the house, we don't want the pet so we are getting rid of it even though you love it." In your case, your parents did not want a house full of cats. In the OP's case, the parents didn't want the dog. In both cases the parents wanted the drama to be minimal so in your case they gave away the cats while you were away so it was a done deal when you got back. To give them away while you were home was to put up with you kicking and screaming and perhaps hiding the cats or whatnot. To do it when you were away was easier for them. Sure, you were upset but they figured you'd just get over it. In the OP's case, the parents tried to eliminate the drama by lying, which has now blown up in their faces. Not that I am a fan of what your parents did, but to their credit, they told you to your face that they got rid of your cats. The OP's parents lied to the OP about the dog, which is far worse. Frankly from the way things seem to be going, it is apparently better for families to just not get pets to begin with. It seems to end up with the parents getting fed up and unloading the animals and the kids being hurt. With the economy being the way it is, families are dumping pets because they can no longer afford to care for them, so I would hesitate to judge any parents who are unloading pets at this time. It may be out of financial necessity and they don't want to admit to their kids that they are having problems. I'm not saying that is why your parents gave away your cats; I'm just putting it out there that some families are being forced to make hard choices.
