Today, my son was crying because he wanted his daddy, and he asked when he can see him. I had no idea what to say, given his dad left us in the middle of the night last year, now lives in another country, and told me he never wants to see us again. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Just a dream
Today, at midnight, I heard my son calling for his mom. I stopped by his room and asked him what was wrong? He didn't tell me. Instead, he said: "Oh, I don't need you." FML
Today, I saw my son. I didn't know I had a son. FML
Today, I got back home from work and casually asked my dad, "What's up?" He casually replied, "Wishing I'd had a son instead." and stared glassy-eyed at me until I left the room. FML
Nice
Today, I was saying goodbye to my 5 year-old son before dropping him at my mom's, as I was leaving for two days, and told him I would miss him. He said, "l won't miss you, I never miss you when you are gone." FML
People don't always get sarcasm
Today, my son asked if there was a way to make parenting easier. I sarcastically told him he could be a deadbeat who sees his kid every two weeks. He must have thought I was serious because he broke up with his girlfriend and baby, turned up at my door expecting to have his old room, and told my wife it was my idea. FML
Great talk, Dad
Today, I was sitting in my room when my dad walked in to talk. He said I'm not the son he'd hoped for, and that he'd been let down as a father. He said I should change the way I am so that he could love me more. It was the longest conversation I've had with my dad in years. FML
On the move
Today, my wife and I realized that we made a huge mistake in allowing our son to stay behind and live with my parents when we had to move cross-country due to work. Our lives are so empty without him and we're missing out on watching him grow up, but he refuses to come live with us. FML
Today, the guy I have been seeing left town to visit his family for three weeks. A few hours later, he called me from the airport to say he is never coming back. FML
Today, my four-year-old asked me when I was going to die. I replied "Not for a long time, why?" He looked at me and stated "Because I only want to live with Daddy." FML
Unloved
Today, my dad lied and said he was busy working, all because he didn't want to see me. FML

I'm sorry OP. This happened to me when I was younger and I never understood it. It gets easier for the kid with time, but LOTS of it. just know your ex is kind of a piece of shit for leaving you and your kid and not bothering to be a parent to his own son.

That's got to be hard, your child will figure it out on their own one day... There are no words, to say to comfort him, just reassure him you will never leave... It gets easier with time..

Maybe some counseling will do your child some good? Your child may be suffering form attachment disorder

Attachment disorder? A small child missing his father? No.

Attachment disorder typically effects kids who where neglected/abandoned by both parents. Most kids who have one parent leave them aren't going to have that problem.

This is one of the saddest FML I've read.

Oh, poor teeny pumpkin! I'm so sorry that he has to deal with this at such a young age. And I'm sorry you have to walk him through it. I understand on a really personal level; you are welcome to contact me if you like.

I'm so sorry, OP. Perhaps therapy would be good for your child (and would probably help you too). I'm not going to say there's any disorder going on here like someone commented above, but you don't have to have a diagnosable psychiatric condition to benefit from therapy. Abandonment like that is huge, and can weigh on a person for their whole life.

What kind of asshole would click on "YDI" how in anyway shape or form did the OP deserve this?

Hopefully most of them were accidents but I'm sure a few of them were from dad's who pulled the same shit or people making assumption about the mom without knowing anything.

only possible reason is when scrolling on a phone or a misclick

Your poor baby!! I'm so sorry, OP. That child's "father" is a ******* douchenozzle! I just can't understand how people can abandon their children like that. Hang in there!

Don't bring him up and don't let it be brought up, your kid will accept the truth that he will never be in his life anymore and that's that.

I feel like not talking about the situation isn't actually a good thing or very healthy. You can't go your entire life pretending someone doesn't exist and expect to be ok, especially when that someone is a parent to your child.

So I've gone through this, and you should definitely explain to the kid what happened, it's a lot better than staying up at night wondering where the hell he is

Tell your son the truth and make sure he know it's not his fault. "daddy" has had lots of time to come to his senses so you don't owe him more time and you are not doing your son any favors by letting believe daddy is a nice man. . Next, take a little time for you and ask yourself how you would feel about your son growing up to be just like him. Trust me, it's better to raise your son without that kind f man for a father.
