Today, my roommate asked for my opinion of her new painting. The same painting I hand-painted for over ten hours. She apparently thought it was a gift. She won't give it back. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I spent the whole night and day painting a portrait of my girlfriend. Being proud of it, I sent it to her hoping she would appreciate it. I spent hours working on that picture only for her to reply with, "That's not me, is it?" FML
Today, one of my paintings was accepted into a local art gallery. It would've been a dream come true, had my "best friend" not submitted it under her own name and taken all the credit. FML
Today, I spent hours hand-painting an awesome design on a gift for a friend. My husband was supposed to assemble it when I finished, but when I stepped back to admire my work, he informed me that the whole thing was sideways. He watched me paint it. FML
Today, I finished a big art project. It was a self-portrait done in acrylics. Proud of my piece, I showed my mom. After some thought her first comment was, "well, I'm either going to insult your art or your face." FML
Today, it's my girlfriend's birthday. I presented her with an oil painting of her that I'd been working on for over a month, and she started to cry. I thought it was because she liked it, until she asked if she really looks that ugly and disproportionate in real life. FML
Today, I came home to find that my girlfriend had repainted my bedroom. As she had offered to do it, it shouldn't have been a problem. However, she decided to return the several unopened cans of off-white paint that I'd bought for something "more neutral." Like "Sunset Orange." FML
Today, as my friend was rudely rummaging through my phone, she saw a picture of the pottery I've painted her for Christmas. Not only did she see it, but she also declared it ugly. That's probably the present I'm the most proud of this Christmas. FML
Today, my grandpa saw one of the paintings in the guest room at my house. "What the fuck?" he snorted, then said whoever painted it should "stick to their damn day job". I painted it. FML
Today, my friend told me I'm not welcome in her house anymore. I've spent the last two months painting and doing it up for her, because she's pregnant and couldn't herself. I just finished the job. FML
Link please
Today, my wife sold her first painting and was so proud of herself, until she found the buyer online and realized his YouTube page is full of videos where he paints over horrible art and turns it into good art. Her painting was on it, and yes, he visibly improved it and yes, my wife is raging at me. FML

Can't you just take it back? And lock your room...

Yell "This is Sparta" then kick her in the chest and take it back.

And move

If she's your roommate, wait until she's asleep, take it back, and hide it somewhere maybe?

I usually dislike this joke, but damn it was a funny thing to imagine in this situation.

Comment moderated for rule-breaking.
Take it as a compliment OP, make her post photos of it on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc., get your friends to share it... get some publicity out of your 10+hours of work! Or, your roomie's just playing around...

Yep, theft is always such a compliment.

Just like rape
KaneHunter 22
No. They'll think it belongs to the roommate and OP won't get credit and will look like the art thief

"publicity" doesn't make up for theft nor does it pay the bills

You should sign your work in the future.
Earths_Venus 25
How is that going to prevent someone from taking it?
MRP360 14
because she would have actual proof the work is hers

It gives her an easier time getting it back if she contacts authorities, which is what OP should do if the roommate really won't return it. If someone picked up a few hundred dollars of yours and decided it was theirs you wouldn't let them get away with it; guard your paintings the same way, OP. If the roommate won't give it back, call the cops. You have the paint at least and the roommate can't have any proof that it's theirs.

Except, the roommate says it's a "gift", so signing it wouldn't do anything.

So if I went and stole someone's car and got caught, I could easily get off by saying" but...but it was a gift."
wolfheartmoon 12
You're a special kind of stupid. A car has a title to it, it is registered to someone, it has to be SIGNED OVER to the new owner.
RedPillSucks 33
roommate thought it was a gift from someone else, so signing it would remove that issue. unless the roommate thought OP was secretly in love with her.... but that's a different problem

Ok, then what if you invited friends over and one od them took a wad of cash from you. If they say it was a gift, would that allow them to get away with it?

Like others have said before me OP, just sign your work, and then on the back write "Property of (insert your full name here)" that way there can be no possible confusion and in the event your roommate attempts to call the police or steal it again and you need to call the police, there will be no question as to whom the painting belongs to. Oh, and I'd gtfo ASAP lol sounds like your roommate is crazy.

I say while OP's room mate is sleeping, or maybe when she leaves for work, OP should proceed to sign the artwork to prove who's it is and then when the roommate gets back, go on to retrieve the painting. At least if authorities are called OP will have proof of who it belongs to with the signature.

Looks like you've had a brush of bad luck.
BlueAz 3
At least she likes it right?
SweetasCandy0609 28
OP just take it back when she is working or sleeping and put it in storage or see if a family member you know you can trust will hang on to for you it's yours don't let her walk all over you or she will just keep doing it.
IKickPuppiesHard 16
How did she think it was a gift? Did you leave it on her bed with a bow on top? If you didnt , clothesline her and take it back.
anonymousguy1569_fml_fml 12
Step 1: walk over to the painting Step 2: pick it up Tadaaaa, you now have the painting.

Yes this would upset me and I would take authority over this situation. This is stealing, big problem. I do not like roommates who touch or take my stuff.
