Thoughts and prayers
Today, my mom sent me to a counselor she knew "through the church" so that I could get some stressors off my chest. Worst idea ever. This "counselor" invalidated everything I had to say and basically told me to pray the issues away, all while completely ignoring me. FML

Sometimes it takes a few tries to find a counselor who is the right fit. Though when you go to religious people and ask for counsel no one should be surprised that they come back with religion.

(1) Not all psychologists or counselors will work well with a given personality. (2) Avoid confusing “religious counselors” with a psychologist (unless you don’t mind the possibility of well intended but horribly ineffective counseling like this.) Tell your mom that this counselor just isn’t working out for you and you want to see a licensed psychologist.

Ah yes. What a great way to stop someone from being stressed. "Oh just pray more."
