Today, my girlfriend of five months told me that she had booked us reservations to our town's Halloween barbecue party. When I reminded her that I'm vegan, she told me she specifically got the reservations to help me to quit my "stupid fad". Weird, I never knew being a devout Hindu was a fad. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I told my girlfriend that I'm a vegan. She replied, "So, you're allergic to meat?" FML
Never gonna happen
Today, my girlfriend woke me up by saying, "Good morning! We're going to be vegans from now on." FML
Disloyal!
Today, I was at my boyfriend's house for dinner with his family. His mom cooked up a steak dinner, except that I'm a vegan, but trying to be a good girlfriend, I forced it down. Upon his mother finding out I was a vegan, she called me "disloyal to my beliefs." FML
Today, my vegan girlfriend openly admitted that she'd let me die if she had to choose between saving my life or an animal's. She actually seemed confused as to why that upset me. FML
Today, I took my girlfriend out to a vegetarian-friendly restaurant. She ordered shrimp fettuccine, and I asked why. She slowly explained to me that vegetarians can eat shrimp, then muttered that she now knows who has the brains in our relationship. FML
Today, after being a vegetarian for 5 years, I found out that my boyfriend of 2 years has secretly been feeding me meat. His reason is that he thinks it's "funny" that I still call myself a vegetarian afterwards. FML
His loss
Today, a hot guy asked me to meet him at a barbecue restaurant. I reminded him that I was vegan. He replied, "Oh, my bad. Forget it then." and didn't respond to my desperate follow up texts. FML
No way in hell
Today, I told my husband we should try go vegan for a while to see if there were any health benefits. He threw me over his shoulder and put me outside, because, “crazy plant ladies live outside with the other vegetables.” FML
Some people just want to watch…
Today, my boyfriend spent half his paycheck on gourmet steaks, bacon, and all sorts of other meat. When I reminded him we were trying to go meatless to help the planet, he said, "Yeah, I'm done with that. The planet can burn." We'd only been vegan three days. FML
Ingredients check
Today, my boyfriend told me the sauce he made for our dinner that was meat-based, trying to show me how nice meat is and stop me being a weirdo vegan. The reason I’m vegan is because my digestive system can’t handle animal protein. I’m writing this from the bathroom, vomiting myself to death. FML

While what she did was disrespectful to you... I don't see why you being vegan should stop you from enjoying a friendly gathering; regardless of the food they serve.

You need to have a serious talk with your girlfriend. She shouldn't disrespect you and your choices/beliefs like that. If she continues to do this you have to consider dumping her

well 1) she said she got the reservation in hopes of getting him to quit veganism and 2) it sucks being the only one at a dinner party without good food. so I can see why op isn't too pleased

While I agree on being able to enjoy the event regardless of the food, OP's gf's complete lack of respect or understanding for both his lifestyle and religion point to a much, much deeper issue. If the gf's sole reason was for OP to get over his "stupid fad," I absolutely would not go to the BBQ on general principle. And yes, if this is the person she is revealing herself to be after five months, I would seriously reconsider whether she is worth being with.

Eh, I don't know. If part of my religious beliefs had to do with not eating a specific food, I'm not sure I'd want to go to a party where people are chowin' down on it everywhere.

Actually, for a vegan, most stuff at a barbecue is out. Aside from the meat, any salad with eggs, mayo or cheese in it, anything with honey in it for some vegans.... I wouldn't want to be at a barbecue where everyone was eating and not be able to do anything but watch while I'm nursing a bottle of water and counting the time until I can politely leave and get something to eat.

I see your point when it comes to parties or gatherings which don't focus on eating. But a meeting whose whole purpose is to eat? It will be very boring since you don't have anything to do while everyone else is eating. People will be dismissive of you from the start and you most likey have to defend yourself and your views the whole time and listen to all the stupid vegan jokes who weren't even funny when you heard them the first time years ago. And either way you will be the annoying vegan who forces her believe on them just because you are existing. So no, thanks.

As a long time vegan like that you won't be tempted. Just go an enjoy the Halloween party.
Enslaved 38
Being tempted wouldn't be the problem. If OP is a devout vegan Hindu, I doubt he'd want to be surrounded and support an event that he'd be against. Animals are sacred. A barbecue with grilled slaughtered animals he values would be offensive. Don't you think?
TheBiggerBoot 7
So he shouldn't go out? At all? Shouldn't he be offended by hot dog stands? Co worker with a chicken sandwhich?
Enslaved 38
Not saying that at all. You can't control what others do, only what you do and support.

There's a different between a party where there's and a party dedicated to food, 30.

Ah, yes, Hinduism. That fad that's lasted thousands of years and has defined the culture and upbringing of millions of people.

I don't think you understand what Hinduism entails, #23.

hindus are SOMETIMES vegetarians, not vegans. vegetarianism is not a requisite to being hindu. veganism is a fad in comparison to hinduism. so many non-hindus willing to defend something they know nothing about. the op is either laughing at you all or simply cannot grasp simple concepts in their self-reported religion.

I'm actually interested in hearing about vegan Hinduism. I thought that the consumption of milk was a key part of Hinduism and the basis for why the cow is sacred (as it is a fount of sustenance and a symbol of the connection between the gods and man). That said, the gf is a jerk and OP should drop her. His choices, regardless of why he made them, is his business.

God, you're such a hipster. Just like that buddhist fad, and the muslim fad. Grow up already ! seriously, you need to talk to her and explain that you are following your religion and she should respect that... or at least know that info by now, after five months :l
Lalala579121 28
Or even worse all those Christian fad people? I can't stand them. They should just get over their dumb fad already.
superlloyd 15
veganism is NOT part of Hinduism.
xxDeeStar 27
Even if you weren't Hindu, being vegan isn't a fad. Your girlfriend is very rude and inconsiderate. If she hasn't accepted this in the last 5 months... It's tricky to say she will accept it now. Regardless, you deserve someone who respects your decisions. Get rid of her!

Hindus consume dairy products. Your girlfriend needs to go with someone else to the BBQ -- you'd be a waste of money at the event.

Well, there are some pretty annoying hipsters that convert to whatever religion is trendiest every 6 months. And some only go vegan or convert religions so they can feel morally/spiritually superior, not because they actually care. But I'm guessing OP's situation is more about the girlfriend's ignorance that being a vegan is even connected to his religion. Maybe she needs a sit down talk about respecting your partner's belief system (so long as it's not hurting anyone). And if she still doesn't take it seriously, well... probably best to ditch her.
domolovesyoshi 33
I doubt OP converted to a religion he was Most probably brought up in it
Dat_Class_Tho 26
Whether he was brought up in the religion or converted as an adult- either way I assume he is as devout as he says he is. I've known some fickle religion-hoppers, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt unless they prove me wrong. That's why I think the girlfriend should be taking his choices more seriously. Judging by the downvotes, I must not have made this clear. Or else, some people just didn't read past the first paragraph.

Wow that is very disrespectful and uncalled for if she keeps doing things like it might be time to reconsider your relationship with her.
