Today, my 4-year-old brother has a very strict 8:30 PM bedtime. Since I would have to walk past his door to get to the rest of the house, I'm not allowed to leave my room past that time, lest I tempt him to get up too. I can't even go to the bathroom. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, I arrived to work at exactly 8 so I could leave at exactly 5, without overtime. I found out later that my brother took my keys with him somewhere and now I can't enter the house until he gets back at 11. FML
Today, I realized my friends and I should be more careful what we say around my younger brother. I never thought he was paying attention until today. My stepmom told him it was time to go to bed. He responded, "I think it's time for you to suck one." My brother is 4. FML
Today, my boyfriend came over while I was babysitting my little brother. He wouldn't stay in bed, so my boyfriend told him,"If you don't stay in bed, the monster will eat you!" I now have to wash my brother's bedsheets, because he was too afraid to get up and go pee. FML
Law and order
Today, at the age of 20, I still have a bed time. It is strictly enforced by my cat via endless meows if I am up past 11 pm. FML
Today, I woke up because of a weird noise. Scared, I turned on my bedside lamp. I saw my older, 17-year-old brother peeing in my bedroom doorway. He was hoping I'd step in it in the morning. FML
Yeet the kid
Today, my son no longer tries to sneak in and out of the house at inappropriate times. Now, he just brazenly walks out, ignoring me when I ask where he’s going, then walks back in at like 4 in the morning, and again ignores me because he’s still on his phone to someone. FML
Supreme Betrayal
Today, I discovered that my family routinely waits until after my bedtime to order a pepperoni pizza, my favorite food. If that wasn't bad enough, I'm 17 and still have a strictly enforced bedtime. FML
Strange parenting
Today, for the fourth day in a row, my nine year-old son dragged his feet when it’s bedtime with any excuse he can come up with. He keeps getting up an hour later to tell me a story. No punishment, nothing works. I gave up and offered him $300, yes $300 cash, to go to sleep. He said no and ran to bed crying, saying I upset him. FML
Today, my 4 year old cousin is staying overnight. Every time I fall asleep he wakes me up to tell me I fell asleep. FML
Sounds like a cult
Today, I realized that my 14 year-old runs my home. She has her own room, while her 11 year-old sister and I (her mother) share a room. I literally have to get her permission to go anywhere as well. FML

Oh that's hardly fair.. Surely you can't be expected not to use the bathroom.

Why don't you just trade rooms?

Actually, my own bedtime was 9:30, before that I was allowed to read but not to leave my room (to prepare myself to sleep, no electronics, no bright lights, etc ...), I had to go to the bathroom before my brother went to sleep, most of the time it was okay, but every once in a while I was having a hard time falling asleep and not going to the bathroom became harder, but my parents were really strict on that matter, bedtime really was no joke. Although I agree with some of the comments, I think my parents sent us both to bed at 8:30 so they would have the whole evening to themselves and not be bothered while watching a movie. It bothered me a lot because I was quite older than my brother and it angered me when they told me I had to set an example for him.

Open your window and take a fat dump to spite them.

Setting an example means not doing stupid stuff that your younger sibling could mimic which would get them into trouble. It doesn't mean you should be treated or act in the same way as your younger sibling. You are at different maturity levels, so you have different needs, to treat a kid as if they're a different age really messes with them. I understand your parents wanting quality time, but they could have done that better. Set reasonable rules, like after 830 you can't interrupt them or something, not that you have to stay in your room completely. Also, they're the ones that chose to have kids. The kids being around and possibly interrupting things kind of comes with the territory of being parents, so I don't feel much sympathy there.

Oh dear! How old are you OP? This living arrangement makes boarding school seem attractive. Hang in there, and good luck! :)

Get your period and free bleed all over your bed sheets.

Try to reason with your parents and come up with a good plan :)

That was a while ago actually, we don't live in that house anymore, and we couldn't trade rooms because mine was bigger and very frankly it never crossed my mind.

Wtf. Definitely trade rooms or try to walk by very quietly. But 8:30 seems extremely early considering that he will wake up extremely early as a result.

8:30 is not too early for a 4 year old. That's a very reasonable bedtime for a kid that age. lol

Small kids need at least 10 hours of sleep a night. I'm a babysitter and 8.30 is actually quite late compared to times I've had to kids to bed/arrived at the parent's home and they were already in bed...
enxhi96 21
That wasn't the case with the kids I have babysat but ok

You obviously don't have any kids

He's four and that's old enough to learn to resist temptation. I wouldn't stomp past his room a lot, but it won't hurt to pass quietly once or twice.

That's sucks OP! Is there a way you can go by once he's asleep, or close his door?
ShortieRose 30
My Daughter, Rayna, is three and she knows that once she has been tucked in, she's in there for the night. Generally it takes 15 minutes for her to go to sleep. I could understand not stomping past your brothers room while he is awake, but after that he shouldn't be able to hear you... unless you have extremely loud floors....

Take advantage of the opportunity and get a bathroom installed next to your bathroom.

No, no, OP should have definitely gotten the bathroom-bathroom deal.

The bedroom-bedroom deal sounds better though

That's a parental excuse for not having to get out of the couch and check on him in the evening. If they are strict enough to impose a bedtime, they should be able to deal with him trying to get up without their permission. You must argue your case.

Shut his door and quietly crawl past??

Slither, I suggest. You can't walk. You might as well so something else and get away with it!
