Today, it's my birthday. My parents, with whom I live, told me that they didn't get me anything, but instead they said they would knock off a bit of the housekeeping I owe them. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Happy nothing, then
Today, it's my birthday. I went downstairs expecting birthday greetings from my parents. Instead, they just sat on the couch saying nothing. Thinking they forgot, I casually reminded them. My mom scoffed and said, "Go do the dishes." FML
Today, it's my sixteenth birthday. The only gift I got was a bill from my parents. Apparently, the rent is due on the 1st. FML
Lovely
Today, my parents forgot it was my birthday. They ordered me to scrub the common bathroom, and when I asked if they'd remembered, my dad's reaction was, "Oh! Really?" My mom's was, "I thought that it was next week." What lovely parents I have. FML
Happy birthday, huh?
Today, I told my family that for my birthday I didn’t want to do any chores and just wanted the house cleaned. What they heard was mom won’t do chores today so let’s leave them all for her tomorrow. I didn’t even have a clean mug for coffee this morning. FML
Happy Birthday baby!
Today, it's my birthday. My parents wished me a happy one via text message. We live in the same house. FML
You forgetting something?
Today, it was my birthday. My family usually gives me a financial gift, but didn't this time and said nothing about it. I cooked my own birthday dinner without help, then washed everyone's dishes. I got my own cake and ate it alone because they were too busy getting drunk. Nobody bothered to sing Happy Birthday either. FML
Today, it's my birthday. I've spent most of it apologizing to my parents for the "hassle" of "having" to arrange a simple birthday dinner. Sorry I was born, guys. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My father didn't get me a birthday present or do anything for me, and acted as though he only came to visit because it was expected. Yet when it was his birthday a couple months ago, he expected me to take him out and pay for it FML
Happy birthday indeed
Today, it was my birthday. I had an appointment at the dentist and went to do some shopping after that. A while after I got home, I met my dad and he just started complaining that I didn't spend any time with them on my birthday. When I tried to explain to him, he just got angry at me and started yelling. FML
Today, I got a birthday card from my parents. It was my sister's from earlier in the year. They scratched out her name and wrote mine underneath. FML

#22 Who said she was old enough to live on her own? The fact that OP is expected to do chores doesn't mean that they're legally old enough to move out.

I'm living with my parents until I can afford my own house because I hate debts and I hate paying rent so I'm not moving out till then. btw for all you old fashioned tough love people I am going to college and awaiting the results of my emt exam so I am earning my right to stay with my parents

How is you going to college "earning" your right to stay? Are they getting anything out of it? I don't think so. You get higher education, free room and board, etc., your parents get... what? If you're over 18 your parents' legal responsibility for you is over. They have NO obligation to let you live with them while you attend college; that's what student housing is for. OMG I'm living with my mom and I have to help with the bills! How terrible my life is! I can't believe my mommy doesn't love me enough to let me mooch off of her forever! Get over yourself...

69 - You hate debts? You hate paying rent? Good lord... you'll get far in life. Debts and rent are facts of life. I was lucky enough to still be able to live at home while I attend college. Others may not be so lucky; many of my friends are using scholarships and loans to pay their way through their education. That's that part solved. They either live on student residence, or they don't. The ones who don't have a full time job and are able to afford a small apartment. What would you ever do if your parents kicked you out?

You're "earning" the right to live there by doing things for yourself? AND you're banking enough cash to purchase a house outright and apparently not paying a dime in rent to them? Because YOU hate debts and rent? Bet your parents hate it more, since they have to pay out more than their own share! If you are the OP: Then apparently in addition to saddling them with all your living expenses, you're not even helping them around the house - enough that they have to try to make a point by forgiving your housekeeping debt to them as a present? How freaking self-centered can you be? Buy yourself a freaking present with your stockpile of cash.

It depends entirely on how old you are. If you are 21+ you should be paying rent or helping in some way. You obviously have some sort of income or else your parents couldn't ask for the money in the first place. Plus, the only reason parents would ask for money is if they really needed it or if they wanted to encourage you to move out and get your own place. Your parents should only support you when you are still in school/college.

Some parents DO ask for income (i.e. rent money) even if you aren't making anything. Been there, done that.

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!

there would be no need to mention they live with parents if op was under 18. that said they should pick up their slack and be happy there parents let them live with them still. but a cake would have been nice.

Well what do you expect? You're living their house! That was actually quite generous of them.

Sounds fair to me

that is an excellent gift. I owe my parents money too and at Christmas and my birthday they knock off some money and guess what I say thank you. what I also do is give them money for their birthdays and mother/father day etc and ask them to knock it off the money I owe them. They moan, laugh and say yes. so be grateful.
