Today, it's my birthday. My father didn't get me a birthday present or do anything for me, and acted as though he only came to visit because it was expected. Yet when it was his birthday a couple months ago, he expected me to take him out and pay for it FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Happy birthday indeed
Today, it was my birthday. I had an appointment at the dentist and went to do some shopping after that. A while after I got home, I met my dad and he just started complaining that I didn't spend any time with them on my birthday. When I tried to explain to him, he just got angry at me and started yelling. FML
Happy birthday anyway!
Today, I received a short happy birthday message from my father. He’s never been one to show affection, and I haven’t spoken to him in months since he only reaches out to ask for money. This might have given me hope that he cares or wants a relationship with me. Except… it’s not my birthday, and I don’t think he knows that. FML
Today, I heard my dad complaining that he won't be able to go to a concert, because it's happening on my birthday. This is the first time he's even acknowledged my birthday in over ten years. FML
Today, it was my birthday. The only person who remembered was my dad who got me a phone charger for my car, which I didn't even need because he got me the same exact thing last year. FML
Happy nothing, then
Today, it's my birthday. I went downstairs expecting birthday greetings from my parents. Instead, they just sat on the couch saying nothing. Thinking they forgot, I casually reminded them. My mom scoffed and said, "Go do the dishes." FML
Today, it's my birthday. My parents, with whom I live, told me that they didn't get me anything, but instead they said they would knock off a bit of the housekeeping I owe them. FML
You forgetting something?
Today, it was my birthday. My family usually gives me a financial gift, but didn't this time and said nothing about it. I cooked my own birthday dinner without help, then washed everyone's dishes. I got my own cake and ate it alone because they were too busy getting drunk. Nobody bothered to sing Happy Birthday either. FML
Grateful
Today, it's the day after my birthday. My boyfriend got me nothing. Nor did he do anything for me for Valentine's Day. Whereas I got him an $85 game for his birthday, planned a surprise visit to his family so he could see them and his pets, and spent all day Valentine's Day making the house spotless, as well as cakes. FML
How can I make this about me?
Today, it's my birthday. My wife took me to my favorite restaurant for dinner. She made me pay for my birthday dinner, along with hers. She also got me a gift card to HER favorite store. FML
The blame game
Today, I'm mad at my dad for forgetting it's my birthday. He's mad at me for not reminding him. FML

OP - That sucks! My advice would be to return the favor at his next birthday and see if he learns anything from that. But I would not take it farther than that at this time. Not giving a gift for your birthday is not a reason to cut him out of your life - If OP did that then she would seem the petty one. Unfortunately, parents are human and some are better than others at sharing and celebrating milestones. Some are forgetful and forget those occasions when they roll around. And some think they have already put in all the effort while their children were young and now it’s time to just collect the rewards without making an effort now.

well then next year just call him on his birthday, and leave it at that. and to people who are like "ohhh he took care of you for 18 years ungratefull brat". yeah. he chose to have a kid. not taking care of them is a crime, and does make you a generally shit person. if he wants love and affection he can damn well be expected to give love and affection himself.

He’s just trying to raise you to be better than he turned out. That’s the biggest gift of all! Typically a selfish shit parent will try to shape their kids into being selfish ***** just like them.

You expect a birthday gift. For what? Being born? He raised you, correct (and I assume you're not 12 and already out of the house). My parents don' visit or buy me birthday presents, but I don't "tit for tat" and give freely not expecting anything in return. What was so difficult for you to take him out to dinner for once? Or are you so self-involved that anyone in your life not giving you a gift is immediately an asshole somehow? You didn't plan a wedding a year ago and then expected people to pay thousands to attend, right? I'm just checking...

If you would read my comment I made yesterday, you would see that it wasn’t really about the gift. I was venting ahole. We took him out to dinner, and took him to topgolf which is quite expensive.

I agree and men need to stop "white knighting" women who act like they need or deserve something simply because they exist. stop endulging them.

My guess about those hating on OP for merely wanting to be appreciated, is that they treat their families like garbage while expecting to be cherished in return, just like Selfish Dad here. Newsflash folks: Just because you relate to someone, that doesn't prove they have the moral high ground.

Are you surprised? Just have a conversation with him To see where he is coming from with the lack of consideration to you you might be surprise
