Today, I was feeling sick and ended up throwing up as soon as I got home. My mother's first question was an accusatory, "What have you been drinking?" I was returning from the AA meeting I have been attending for over a month. I go because I'm afraid I'll become an alcoholic like her. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I had to confess to my mother that I was too hungover to take her to her AA meeting. FML
Denial
Today, my mom left the house in the morning, leaving me alone. I called and I got no answer. Hours later, she finally answers one of my calls and tells me that she'd been in an AA meeting all this time. Happy, I tell her to come home. She came home drunk. FML
Today, I wasn't feeling too well and consequently threw up. In an effort to get some sympathy, I told my mom about what happened. Rather than trying to make me feel better, she yelled at me because I threw up in the bathroom sink "when the damn toilet is two feet away." Thanks mom. FML
Hangover
Today, I got really sick after drinking a lot of alcohol and started throwing up. Every time I threw up into the toilet, the water would splash back up into my face. FML
Today, I felt sick to my stomach, so I told my mother I didn't want to eat dinner. She started accusing me of being anorexic, so I ate a little bit anyway to make her stop. I then threw up, only for her to take it as confirmation that I have an eating disorder. FML
Today, I helped myself to a small glass of cocktail from the fridge, not realising it was alcoholic. I told my mom what happened. She made me drink salty water until I vomited so I wouldn't get "alcohol poisoning". I'm 19. FML
Denial
Today, my mom took me to an AA meeting because she said I needed help. I have never tried alcohol in my life, and told them this. I was then harangued by the "instructor" because apparently one of the signs of alcoholism is denial. FML
Today, I had to go pick up my kid, because he threw up while playing at his friend's house. The boy's mother bitched me out for not keeping my son at home while he was "ill". Her breath was unspeakably foul. So foul that it caused me to throw up too. FML
Today, while trying to act sober in front of my parents when I got home, I threw up on my mom's shoe. FML
Today, I was woken up to my mother screaming obscenities at me, all because I threw up last night after days of not feeling well, and the flushing of the toilet afterwards woke her up. FML

Have you attended any Al-Anon meetings (held worldwide) for family members, relatives, & friends of alcoholics to explain their behaviors and to teach you how to adjust your own thinking/ behaviors accordingly for your own sake (and hopefully theirs - if they choose to do so)? I'm sure that they must also address the fear of becoming an alcoholic while living with one. However, since you already recognize/ have experienced some of the negative traits/ behaviors perpetrated by an alcoholic, I doubt that you'd find yourself becoming one too, but it's always better to learn as much as you can so as to best prepare yourself against it. Many children of alcoholics never drink throughout their entire lives: bad memories and fear of becoming same. Good luck! :-)

You probably felt sick from subjecting yourself to a program based on manipulating people through fear, shame, and guilt. If you're genuinely worried about addiction, get help from actual addiction specialists with medical degrees. Not religious programs designed to foster dependence. 12-step programs have the highest rate of relapse among any addiction program.

At least you have the right name for it! I don’t know if they let in pre-alcoholics. “I’m Jim, and I’m genetically predisposed to become an alcoholic..,” Nah, I don’t think so.
