Today, I was checking out a customer who seemed quite friendly. As I finished, he reached slightly over the counter and I impulsively reached out and shook his hand. He gave me a dumbfounded look and said, "Can I have my change please?" FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, I was chatting with a customer who comes regularly to my job. He sticks his hand out and I put my hand on his, thinking he's giving me a high five. He was just waiting for his receipt. FML
Today, I fistbumped a cashier as they tried to hand me my change. FML
Today, after paying at the gas station, the cashier stuck out her hand, which was clenched into a fist. I thought she wanted a fist-bump, so I gave her one. She just stared back at me. Turns out she was just trying to give me my change. FML
Today, while working at a bank, I helped a customer who was making a large withdrawal. After I counted out his money, I asked "Do you want the strap on?" After a moment of awkward silence, as I realized how that came out, he smiled and said, "No thanks, I don't need one." and winked. Great. FML
Panic mode
Today, I felt like doing a good deed, so when I bought something at a store I told the cashier to keep the change. The cashier then panicked and said, “What do I do???” Turns out, I was her first ever customer. FML
Today, a customer handed me a 100 dollar bill. He then told me that it was my tip for doing a good job. He snatched it away just as I touched it, laughed, and said, "Just kidding." He then took his money and left the store. FML
Today, at work at a car dealership, a seemingly overzealous customer shook my hand vigorously after we finalized a deal. I didn't think anything of it until a coworker pointed out that he was just trying to make my breasts jiggle. I'm a man. FML
Gross
Today, I had no choice but to shake the hand of a customer who, just moments before, had the aforementioned hand down the front of his pants, scratching his snowglobes. FML
Gross
Today, while I was working the drive-thru window, a customer sneezed into his hand and then handed me his money. FML
Casual something
Today, I went to the Asian Grocery. I politely smiled, bellowed, “Hello!” and kind of waved to the cashier as I walked in, to which he gave me a blank, scared-for-his-life kinda look. Turns out he was actually just another customer. FML

Hmmm were you checking him out or "checking him out"? Way to play it cool.

Unfortunately you'll have to do a little extra if you want to keep that change.

Shaking his hand is a good starter for getting something extra.

Definitly the shaking, but not of the hand...

Maybe OP should be outside wearing the donut costume instead.

Why? She would just attract cops....

Don't feel too bad. We've all been in awkward situations. Try and play it cool as if nothing happened.

Did you give him his change?
nnnope 26
no, OP definitely pocketed the change and sent the customer on his way after confusing and annoying him. and they say there's no such thing as a stupid question...

And that's when you laugh, apologise and say it's been a long day. I've had several salespeople forget to give me my change or, on one occasion, even the stuff I bought; it's completely understandable. And if the client has a shred of a sense of humour or empathy, it's not even that awkward.

I've done this exact thing and said exactly that. it's embarrassing as hell but 💁♀️

you should've said "of course, I just thought this transaction was lovely and you deserved a hand shake for being such a good fellow" with your most ridiculous fake British accent, naturally. it's always better to turn an awkward situation like this, into a funny one.
Danielle7994 18
That would probably confuse and annoy him even more...
deadhead419 15
That would've made it more awkward...

There's no need to be shaken up by this, OP. Just be the change you wish to see, and as always, May the Fourth be With You.

This being FML and all, you should be glad you only grabbed his hand

Change comes from within, my friendly friend.

... Be the change

Haa. I've been there OP. Usually customers are fine with it if you just apologise and joke that it has "just been one of those days." Turning a potentially awkward moment into a light laugh. Customer service skills! :-P
