Today, I walked into pawn shop and found a nice laptop which I inspected after I thought I lost mine months ago. Turns out my ex pawned it after having it at her place all this time. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, my boyfriend called me to ask if I knew the serial number for my laptop. I had given him my $650 gaming laptop to sell in his electronics store because I didn't need it and could use the money. Apparently it was stolen at some point yesterday and his cameras were turned off. FML
Suspicious activity
Today, I visited my girlfriend's apartment for the first time. I guess she forgot to do some spring cleaning before I showed up, because I saw my laptop on her couch. The same laptop that was stolen from my house along with several other valuables last week. FML
Today, I got my laptop back after lending it to my friend. It wouldn't boot, and after investigating I found out it'd been stripped of its hard drive and all its memory. When I confronted my "friend", he accused me of lying and trying to ruin his reputation. FML
Today, I came home to my empty apartment. My girlfriend had left a note on the floor that said: "Took my stuff and left. Took your stuff and pawned it." FML
Always save to the cloud!
Today, I finally finished typing up a story I had been working on for about 7 months, saved it on my computer and left to hang with friends. Came home later to find my dad had sold my laptop in order to pay his phone bill. My hard work is now gone. FML
Today, I came home to find that my roommate had picked my lock and stolen my new laptop. When I tried to take it back, he called the police. They sided with him since he had also taken the receipt, which was "proof" that it was his. FML
Today, I took my new laptop into my house from my car, thinking it would be a too much of a target for kids grabbing it. I came home tonight to find my door kicked in, my laptop gone and my TV ripped from the wall. FML
Today, someone stole my laptop from my car. However, they were nice enough to relock the doors after they smashed in the window. FML
Today, I got a laptop for my birthday. I was thrilled until I realized that my mom had given away my old one without asking. 6 years of games, music, and pictures down the drain. FML
Today, I came home to find that my mother had sold all my valuable collector coins for cheap at a local shady pawn shop to buy herself a TV. The coins in question were worth enough to start a business. FML

You know how spouses who have been together a while sometimes renew their vows? It might be worth calling up your ex and renewing your breakup.

Wow, that must really suck. And there isn't a way to somehow prove you were the owner or something ?

I swear that's illegal

Don't worry, I'll believe you, #1. As odd as it seems, I too think theft is illegal.

It's not. It doesn't sound like OP reported it stolen or missing to the police. He left it at an ex for months with out retrieving it, there for abandoning it.

#13, Pawning something that you know is someone else's, whether they forgot it at your place or not, is most definitely illegal and also extremely spiteful.

But did you ask her if it was at her place or not at all? Because if the first is true fyl. If the second, again fyl for having a shitty ex.

Yay! Now all you have to do is buy your own laptop back! :D

Look at the bright side, OP.... YOU found it before someone else did. That's some great luck!

thats why you keep the serial number somewhere

That's called theft. Report this to the police. The pawnshop keeps records of customers. If you can prove it is your laptop and she essentially stole it, she's in big trouble.

Problem is she didn't "essentially steal it" he "essentially" abandoned it by leaving it there for months without retrieving it. With out OP reporting it stolen no crime was committed.

"Thought lost" means he didn't CHOOSE to leave it there, and she may have hidden it from him.

Even if it was wiped, it is probably recoverable, but yeah, there unless he has solid proof she can just say he ignored her trying to return it or it was a gift or something.

The police won't do anything. OP never reported the laptop as stolen or even lost, there's no proof he didn't know what happened to it. The girl could easily say he asked her to pawn it or he gave it to her as a gift, and that he's now trying to get her in trouble because he's mad about the breakup... So, I'm going with YDI on that one because I can't understand why OP didn't care for months. A laptop isn't like keys or a phone, you don't "lose" it like that.

If you can prove it's yours the pawn shop has to give it back to you and your ex can be charged.
