Today, I got a laptop for my birthday. I was thrilled until I realized that my mom had given away my old one without asking. 6 years of games, music, and pictures down the drain. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my parents got me a new computer for my birthday. They also took the liberty of throwing out my old computer, with 8 years of photos, videos, music, documents, emails, and bookmarks on it. But that's okay, I had a backup. They threw that out too. FML
Always save to the cloud!
Today, I finally finished typing up a story I had been working on for about 7 months, saved it on my computer and left to hang with friends. Came home later to find my dad had sold my laptop in order to pay his phone bill. My hard work is now gone. FML
Today, it's my birthday. After a day out partying, I came home to find all my stuff smashed in the yard, even my 42" plasma TV. After asking my girlfriend what her problem was, she said a "slut" left a message on the machine stating how fun last night was. It turned out to be my mom. FML
Today, I received my new laptop in the mail and put it on the kitchen counter, where my family charges all our electronics. My mom then decided to make soup and spilt chicken broth all over my new laptop before I even got the chance to turn it on. FML
Full house
Today, using the money my mom gave me for my birthday, I bought a new laptop for school. When I went online to register for classes, I found that all the online classes were full and remaining classes didn't qualify for my major. FML
Today, I deleted a load of junk that was messing up my mother's computer. I don't know how I'm going to tell her I accidentally wiped out all of her wedding photos. FML
Today, my mom borrowed my computer without my permission and downloaded a virus. I came home to a blue screen of death. She refuses to admit fault and pay for a new computer. FML
Today, I took the motherboard out of my computer so I could put more RAM and a new video card in. While I was in the bathroom my mom threw it all out because it 'looked like garbage'. FML
Today, I took my new laptop into my house from my car, thinking it would be a too much of a target for kids grabbing it. I came home tonight to find my door kicked in, my laptop gone and my TV ripped from the wall. FML
Today, I got a new laptop for Christmas. The picture on the box showed a woman balancing it on one finger to show how light it was, so I tried it myself. I dropped my laptop, breaking the hard drive and putting a massive crack down the screen. FML

Yikes. Ask for it back so you can get all the old data from it! I'm sure any reasonable person would oblige

She probably had sold it to buy you this one.

It can be very dangerous to pass on a computer. If you pass on a computer, wipe the HDD with 1's and 0's numerous times. Yes, pressing delete on your computer doesn't actually delete files, it makes them some what unavailable waiting to be overwritten.

That sucks, I am glad that it has never happened to me, I got a lot I would never want to lose. Some parents don't understand that you can't just magically transfer data without having the old computer around.

Yes you can. It's called the cloud or a remote server.

And that's really ******* helpful when you don't back it up to the cloud because you haven't planned on your mother getting rid of your computer.

Some of us don't want 5Tb of data sitting in the cloud

Should have backed it up.

#41, OP needs the original computer to put it on a cloud because it's not currently in a cloud.

My parents took my old laptop to an electronics recycling day before I could transfer everything onto my new one. Granted, I had two years and was just lazy, but I feel your pain, OP. I was devastated. I've been able to recover my music from my old mp3 player, but the photos and documents are long gone. Major hugs from me, OP.

If she gave it away, it's probably to someone you know. Just ask for it back to (at the Very least) back up your files
