Today, I walked into a gas station and saw some $.25 gum. It looked good and I thought I had a quarter in my pocket. I found no change in my pocket once I got to the register, so I pulled out my credit card. The cashier laughed a few seconds later when my card was declined for a piece of gum. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, while at the vending machine, I put in my $20 instead of my $1. I got my change back in quarters. FML
Today, I was so broke that I paid for a $0.28 candy bar with my credit card. FML
Broke
Today, my card got declined at Subway, so I walked to the nearest cashpoint thirty minutes away to frantically figure out how much cash I had in my card. As I went to pull my card out of my purse, it slipped from my grip and fell into the sewer. The guy behind me snorted with laughter. FML
Today, when paying for gas, I realized I'd forgotten my wallet back home. After a moment of panic, I managed to remember my card number. I paid, blowing the cute cashier's mind, and drove away, before my car started sputtering and slowed to a crawl. I'd used the wrong fuel. FML
Today, I was standing in the gas station, pulling out my wallet to pay the $100 of gas I just filled my car with. I opened my wallet and found a note saying "borrowed money for food". FML
Today, I handed a middle-aged woman her change of $0.75 with three quarters. She looked at the change bewildered and threw the coins down, asking if she thought I could get away with only giving her thirty cents. I had to explain to her how much a quarter is worth. FML
In this economy?!
Today, I was at the gas station with my grandma. After I slid her card and began to pump, I convinced her that it was a lot easier and more convenient to pay at the pump with your credit card instead of paying inside. She yelled as I realized I went $20 over what she had to spend. FML
Today, I pulled into the gas station to fill up only to realize I had forgot my wallet. By the time I went home, got it, and came back, the price had gone up eleven cents. FML
Baller
Today, I went to a coffee shop with the change I got back after buying a ball. After having waited in line for around twenty minutes, I was told that only credit cards were allowed. I'd left my wallet in my car because I thought I didn't need it. FML
Today, my boss asked me if he could pay me in gum. Thinking he was playing around, I agreed. He wasn't playing around. FML

Most places won't even let you use your card for something that cheap, they have to pay a fee every time someone charges. They'd lose money.

I'm sorry, but if you didn't have a quarter why didn't you just put the gum back? why would you use your credit card just for a piece of gum??

Well most people use the term credit card even though they have a debit card

Any credit card charge that small would not be declined.

that sucks xD but still funny. You should shop less

Indeed. It also sound like OP wanted to buy the gum because it seemed cheap, not because he actually wanted it. And even so, you should know you're poor, so don't go wasting money on gum...

You're lucky he didn't run your card and say "Ten dollar minimum purchase on credit card transactions" and sell you the most expensive gum ever!

I woulda just put the gum back. Why would you charge a 25 cent item? That's just dumb

Why is a 25 cent purchase any different from a $25 one? If it's worth paying for it's worth paying for, and for me at least a card is much more convenient than cash...

It actually cost business owners a fee per transaction and a percentage of the purchase amount to accept credit cards. It's an unpredictable expense because cards that offer rewards typically pass the cost on to business owners who accept the cards. It's also why many business owners don't accept every card. American Express, for example, charges higher rates to business owners than Discover, MasterCard or Visa. Using a credit card to buy a $.25 item basically means the business owner is paying you to take their merchandise.

Unless you live in a state without sales tax a quarter wouldn't have been enough anyway...

That is just sad.

I had that happen once, over 99 cent sunscreen. My card declined and I ended up walking 6 blocks with my son, and we were both fried. Sucks to be poor.
