Today, I met with my boss hoping to hear about a possible raise that had been promised many months ago. He then told me that the only way I would get a raise was if I found a better paying job and took it, and that the company was in no position to offer anyone a raise. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Know your place
Today, I asked my boss for a raise. I pointed out that due to a technicality, if he hired someone to replace me, he'd have to pay them more anyway. He said he'd gladly pay more for "someone who knows his goddamn place" and made it clear I'll be jobless very soon. FML

Today, I asked my boss for a raise, but he told me my position is a legal requirement that produces no profit, unlike every other employee, ergo if I’m feeling ungrateful about my generous wage, he will happily fire me and hire someone else at minimum wage, saving the company money. FML
Today, my boss found out I had applied for a much better paying job. He told me I'd do a better job and make more money there. Then he fired me. FML
Healthy work environment
Today, I summoned the courage to go into my boss’s office and ask for a raise. He yelled at me, called me “ungrateful”, asked how dare I ask him such a question, and that I’m lucky to even have a job in the first place. I ended up reduced to tears. FML
Today, I found out that my boss, who had promised me a raise, is not promoting me. He says I don't have the right 'vibe' and I'm not 'relaxed' enough for the job. FML
Today, my boss made up a rumor that I was quitting my job so I wouldn't get the promotion that was coming up. There goes that raise I've been wanting for six months. FML
Today, I went to ask my boss for a raise. He laughed at me and said, "That's hilarious because I was going to ask you if you could take a pay cut!" FML
Today, I walked into my boss's office to ask for a raise, and walked out unemployed. FML
Exploitation
Today, despite having made it clear that I'm neither interested, nor I am able to take over the jobs of the 3 members of staff who have recently left, my boss made a "Progress Plan" for me and will check on it weekly. I'm getting paid 1.5 times less than average in my role and he's not giving me a raise because the company is stingy. FML
Today, I asked my boss for my first raise in almost two years, to which he replied, "In the real world, I think you've definitely earned one, but this isn't the real world." FML

I once was offered a bonus if I put in some overtime on a work assignment. So I did and they paid. Ok, come the end of the year at the normal bonus time, I was told I had already gotten a bonus.

hm. sounds like the company is in dire straights, then, if it cant afford to give anyone a raise.

That sucks OP, but at least your boss was honest rather than stringing you along with false promises of a raise "soon"

But that's exactly what his boss did...?

That happened to me at my last job. I did what they said and found a new job at almost double the pay! The old job still calls me from time to time asking if I would ever consider coming back, so I guess they know they ****** up. Good luck OP!

It's illegal for an employer to promise someone something and then retract it, due to promissory estoppel... That's why you should always get everything in writing

Well I'm aware that op is out of luck, it's not as if it was a real thing. I think OP took a suggestion as a set thing and therefore was thoroughly disappointed, all in all.

Don't you know, keeping your job is the new raise.

Next time always remember to get that kind of thing in writing.

Take his advice and start looking for a new job.

Well then leave, because either the people there are douchebags or they might go bankrupt anyway.

Statistically, people who switch jobs at least every three years tend to be paid more than people who don't switch jobs. It's always good to be looking.
