Today, I heard two of my students having a conversation. One asked what state Arizona was in, and the other replied Canada. I teach sixth grade social studies and they weren't joking. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Seniors!
Today, in the senior class I teach, I asked my students who had traveled outside of the country, excluding Canada and Mexico. One student raised his hand and proudly stated, "Arizona". He wants to be a doctor. FML
Today, while teaching my history class, a girl asked me where North America was. She lives in North America. FML
Today, I was giving an anti-drugs speech to a group of ninth graders. I got onto the topic of trafficking from problem countries and asked a student to point out Mexico City on a map. He hesitated a few seconds before pointing at Canada. What the hell has the education system come to? FML
Geography lessons
Today, some people in my class here in New Zealand found out that I'm from Canada, then spent the rest of the period asking if I had a pet moose and whether or not I lived in an igloo. They were completely genuine questions. FML
Today, I actually had to explain to two of my friends that neither Alaska nor Nebraska are in Canada. I think I need new friends. FML
Today, I got a call from an angry parent telling me that I'm teaching her son and the other children in the class "wrong philosophies". This was all because I explained to the class that Michigan is divided into two parts. FML
Today, I heard a teenage boy ask his friend, "So, is it, like, November in Australia too?" This is the future of America. FML
Today, during a lecture, my teacher jokingly talked about the time he was best buds with George Washington. Another student then asked, "Really? You knew him?" I'm in an advanced placement U.S. history class. FML
Today, my best friend called me a moron for disputing her belief that Canada is in South America. FML
Oh the times, they are a-changin'
Today, as two of my students walked into my classroom, I said, "Hi, ladies". One of them screamed at me: "Did you just assume my gender?!" FML

Then make it your job to teach them. At the end of the year, ask them that same question, if they get it right, at least you know you've taught someone something. These are the type of kids that need the most help, it may not be an easy task, but hopefully you can see that the final outcome is well worth the effort you're putting in.

It's the beginning of the year, you can't expect every student to have a firm grasp of the subject. Unless you live in Arizona or the student travels to Arizona frequently, why would you automatically expect them to know anything about it? The entire point of social studies and geography classes are to teach these things. I don't know a single parent that focuses on this information until it's relevant to homework or a trip the family is taking.
