Today, I had to teach my 13-year-old sister that sugar and salt don't, "cancel each other out to make the taste neutral". FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Knowledge is power
Today, I said that I wasn't expecting someone to say salt made a food sweet. My friend then decided to explain what salt is, a flavor enhancer, and "like when it's on the rim of a Margarita." Really? We're all in college and I'm the only one who keeps their grades up. I know what the fuck salt is. FML
Today, I found out that my sister licks all the flavoring off Doritos and puts them back in the bag. FML
Today, my mother-in-law came over for dinner. She decided to salt the food I was preparing without even tasting it first, then complained at dinner that I'd used too much salt. She then lectured me on the proper seasoning of food for the rest of the evening. FML
Today, I had to explain to my daughter that just because it says non-toxic on the crayons, it doesn't mean that you should eat them. She's 16. FML
Today, I had to explain to my seventeen year-old daughter that deep frying food doesn't "melt the calories." FML
Today, I managed to convince my sister that when you press down the diet button on the lid of a McDonald's cup it turns whatever is in there diet. I pressed the button and she started shouting how she hates diet drinks. She's 19. FML
Today, I had to explain to my 14-year-old sister why one must not wear the same pair of knickers for a week. FML
Cooking for none
Today, I wanted to bake some chocolate chip cookies. As the first load was done, I tasted a cookie and it tasted too salty. Thinking it was because of the pinch of salt, I added more sugar to the batter, only to realize that the sugar I've put into the whole batter was actually salt. FML
Today, I got into a fight with my sister. Later on she brought me a bowl of tortilla chips, which I thought was her way of apologizing. I found out too late that she'd licked the flavoring off them and it was really her way of saying "Fuck you." FML
Just eat it
Today, I spent all day carefully preparing a wonderful homemade beef and vegetable stew from scratch. Close to dinner time, I tasted it and it was inedibly salty. Confused, my horrifically bratty stepdaughter then laughed and admitted she poured salt in it because it wasn’t what she wanted for dinner. FML

Duh! Everyone knows you need pepper to cancel out salt.

Just let her try it. She'll figure it out for herself once she tastes it

You cannot deny the logic in her thinking, OP.

For some reason I read this as "sugar and cereal"

I kind of want to know what that tastes like now...

McDonald's do this all the time. You wouldn't think their buns were like a bag of sugar unless someone told you. How? They use salt to mask it.

teach her that if the dish is too salty, a little bit of lemon juice often balances it

People have a lot of different "fixes" for things being too salty... Most of them sound like they would make it worse, though. Or just not taste right. The cooking classes I've taken have all taught that if you make something too salty or too sweet, add more starch to it. Ground up boiled potato, flour, cooked rice ground up, cornstarch, etc. The starch supposedly absorbs the salt or sugar and masks the flavor. Though they also taught that if you over salted or sweetened, it was ideal to scrap everything that was over seasoned... So take the advice with a grain of salt.

... I'm so sorry for the pun(?) at the end. It wasn't intended.
