Today, I had to teach my 13-year-old sister that sugar and salt don't, "cancel each other out to make the taste neutral". FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Knowledge is power
Today, I said that I wasn't expecting someone to say salt made a food sweet. My friend then decided to explain what salt is, a flavor enhancer, and "like when it's on the rim of a Margarita." Really? We're all in college and I'm the only one who keeps their grades up. I know what the fuck salt is. FML
Today, I found out that my sister licks all the flavoring off Doritos and puts them back in the bag. FML
Today, my mother-in-law came over for dinner. She decided to salt the food I was preparing without even tasting it first, then complained at dinner that I'd used too much salt. She then lectured me on the proper seasoning of food for the rest of the evening. FML
Today, I had to explain to my daughter that just because it says non-toxic on the crayons, it doesn't mean that you should eat them. She's 16. FML
Today, I had to explain to my seventeen year-old daughter that deep frying food doesn't "melt the calories." FML
Today, I managed to convince my sister that when you press down the diet button on the lid of a McDonald's cup it turns whatever is in there diet. I pressed the button and she started shouting how she hates diet drinks. She's 19. FML
Today, I had to explain to my 14-year-old sister why one must not wear the same pair of knickers for a week. FML
Cooking for none
Today, I wanted to bake some chocolate chip cookies. As the first load was done, I tasted a cookie and it tasted too salty. Thinking it was because of the pinch of salt, I added more sugar to the batter, only to realize that the sugar I've put into the whole batter was actually salt. FML
Today, I got into a fight with my sister. Later on she brought me a bowl of tortilla chips, which I thought was her way of apologizing. I found out too late that she'd licked the flavoring off them and it was really her way of saying "Fuck you." FML
Just eat it
Today, I spent all day carefully preparing a wonderful homemade beef and vegetable stew from scratch. Close to dinner time, I tasted it and it was inedibly salty. Confused, my horrifically bratty stepdaughter then laughed and admitted she poured salt in it because it wasn’t what she wanted for dinner. FML

Duh! Everyone knows you need pepper to cancel out salt.

Just let her try it. She'll figure it out for herself once she tastes it

Sugar and spice don't make everything nice, I suppose. :l

I mean.. maybe I'm just stupid but I don't think that you should feel bad - or make him feel bad - about this. Given the fact that he's only 13 yo, the idea of different tastes being able to cancel each other out sounds pretty smart. When you think about it, waves can cancel each other out, and so can heat and cold as well... But yeah maybe that's just me.

Waves cancelling each other out is NOT even close to salt cancelling out the taste of sugar, nor is the transfer of heat. You're trying to draw parallels between things that are not analogous. Just stop.

people on this app take everything way too literally, he was giving other examples of how a 13 year old kid would understand how two things can cancel eachother out and putting that knowledge to salt and sugar

Actually if something is too salty if you put a little bit of sugar in it can cut the saltiness. Now making it neutral? No I don't think so.

In cooking a savory dish, if you put too much salt you Can add sugar to cut the saltiness and make it edible. It doesn't taste sweet, it just cuts out the salt.
