Today, I had my first job interview since graduating from university. The person who interviewed me informed me that not using my degree after two years practically makes it null and void. I guess instead of being a financial advisor at the company, I could always be a janitor there. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
The candidate
Today, I had my first job interview in months. The guy chuckled mockingly at my master's degree in philosophy and wound up admitting that he had no idea why I'd even been selected to be interviewed. FML
Today, I found out that the money I spent on a very specific degree was wasted, because apparently, I don't qualify for a job at the place that told me I had to have that degree. FML
Today, I happily went to an interview after job searching for months. I learned a large part of my job would be cleaning the toilets. Every. Single. Hour. I used to lecture at a university until budget cuts happened. FML
Today, I went on my 56th job interview since graduating from college 3 months ago. I am 31 years old and I spent 11 years in college. I only graduated with a Bachelor's Degree after all those years, but I am still not qualified for anything due to how long it took me to complete my degree. FML
Today, I received a rejection letter from a company I interviewed with three weeks ago. They didn't mention giving my $200 portfolio back. Guess I'll keep using my 4-year degree to wait tables. FML
Recruitment hell
Today, I had a job interview and the interviewer assumed that since I'm short, I wouldn't be able to take the garbage out. Yesterday I had another interviewer call me a loser for being a stay-at-home mom. I'm gonna be unemployed forever it seems. FML
Today, I had my last assessment for my university degree in the form of an interview at 11am. Without doing this interview, I can't graduate. The interviewer was a no show. FML
Today, I was unsuccessful in getting a job at a supermarket. The same supermarket I used to work at. I now have a degree but can't even get a job at a place I used to work. FML
Today, after spending 8 months and $11,000 on school, I was denied a job in my chosen career field. They told me they decided to go with someone with more experience. So who got the job? One of my classmates. This is her first job. EVER. FML
Not a good sign
Today, I went to my first job interview. I didn't think I was doing too badly, until the interviewer said, "Wait a second, you're in high school?" I explained that the guy who'd called me had said that this wouldn't be a problem. I then watched as my interviewer left his desk to "deal" with him. FML

That can't be the case everywhere, you just need to find a company that will give you a chance and value your work. Good luck OP!

That's utter Nonsense, and they could be trying to strong arm you for a less qualified position, lesser pay, I say take your talent elsewhere where they recognize it OP

Trust me, that is NOT the case. The only time someone would say something like that is if a) they are just looking to polish their company image with "recent" graduates i.e. people who think that age = understanding technology or b) you are in a field where tech and practices change rapidly, in which case you can keep continually educating yourself outside of school and still be fine.

I'm confused as to why OP is having his first job interview two years after graduating. What's been going on for the last 2 years? Economy isn't that rough you can't even get a job interview.

I would think OP worked in other area. Probably was to lazy to change occupation until it was too late.

Skills learned are still there...it just may take a refresher to get your memory of the skills current!

It's all about who you know OP. I hope everything works in your favor.

Manager is not wrong, you know. OP will fare worse in this field than a recent graduate or a person with actual experience. 2 years gap, no experience, no internships and networking? It is not a lost case, but don't expect this to be easy.

Will have a harder time just at the beginning but will catch up eventually. Those knowledges are not easy forgettable.

Talk to the head of the department and HR your degree is for a lifetime. Whoever interviewed you is stupid

That's a statement from a jealous person who does not have a college degree. A university degree is for life. I haven't used my master of electrical engineering in ages, I am a senior Vice President and all I do is attend meetings, no engineering! Doesn't mean that my degree is forfeit. And if anyone tells me that, I will kick his ass so hard even his mom won't be able to sit down for a year!

As a financial advisor? No. Your degree is fine. Now, if you didn't get an internship while in school (or haven't done that in two years), good luck surviving on Ramen as you go through one for the next couple financial quarters.
