Today, I finally got to a point where I could ask my mother about how enthusiastically she used to beat me. First sentence out of her mouth was, "It didn't change your behaviour, but it did make me feel better." FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, going to my psychiatrist's appointment for my PTSD and depression, my mother yelled about how useless I am and how I torture her existence with my "abnormalities." She told the doctor how much I've improved and become such a delight at home for her and our family. FML
Get out of there
Today, I overheard my mother saying that it is “physically painful” for her not to be mean to me. FML
Today, my mom told me that she heard me and my best friend in my room grunting and talking about how hard we were. She said she loved me and accepted me no matter what. Thanks mom, but we were working out. FML
Today, I approached my mother for comfort, because I've been feeling depressed and unloved by anyone lately. She replied, “Honestly, I stopped loving you back when you were a toddler.” FML
Today, I came home crying and informed my mother that someone had called me a 'fat bitch' today. She held me at arms length, looked me straight in the eyes, and lovingly said, "You can't change who you are." FML
Let it out
Today, I finally convinced my mum to take me to a psychologist. As soon as he sat me down and asked me how I was doing, my mum burst into tears and went on a rant about how her life is terrible and she regrets everything. I was asked to sit in the waiting room. She used up my whole hour. FML
Unfortunate coincidences
Today, I finally stood up for myself and beat the crap out of a bully at school, as my father told me to do. The kid and I were called to the principal's office, along with our parents. Inside my father's smirk faded when he saw that the kid's mom was his boss. FML
Understanding
Today, after struggling with an eating disorder and hiding my symptoms for months, I got up the courage to tell my mom that I need help. Then she asked if an ice cream would make me feel better. FML
TW: Abuse
Today, months after my dad's death, my mother keeps telling me she "realized" how abusive he was, and how she wished she knew, but she swears innocence when I tell her she was just as abusive and enabled it all while he was alive, even being in the same room and doing nothing while he beat me. FML
Wow, thanks, I'm cured
Today, I told my mom that I'm bulimic and have been for a few years, and that I needed help. She responded by saying, "Well that's clearly not working for you. Why don't you try anorexia?" She then patted me on the head, smiled, and walked away. FML

Actually "beat" or just spanked? People don't seem to know the difference anymore so I'm curious

Indeed. Some people call beatings "spankings" even though it's left the flesh raw.

As far as I'm concerned she has a couple pops coming her way. Time to even things out a bit.

It's called child abuse plain and simple as for her mental state as it made her feel better that's downright sickening

Time to start hitting her back. "Makes me feel better Ma"

We've discussed this a lot in my child care classes. If a person can run a school or daycare of over 20 children and control them and discipline them without laying a hand on them, then you can control one child in your own home without hitting them.

Yep. It's about establishing authority, building trust, rewarding good behavior, teaching empathy, and actually being the adult and teaching children how their behavior and choices affect others. It's almost impossible to do any of those things effectively if you're using fear and negative reinforcement on a child.

This is why I'm again physical punishments for children. It doesn't ever change behavior, it's just a frustrated parent taking out their anger

I was spanked, and it definitely changed my behaviour. Myself and my brothers were all spanked as a form of discipline and we all turned out to be really good kids/adults. We all also respect our parents for doing it. With that said, our parents never spanked us while they were angry. They always sent us to our room to think about what we did, then they'd come have a talk with us and tell us that they didn't enjoy spanking us. Anyways point being that you're not actually correct in your assumptions. It does in fact change the behaviour of some kids (not all). And those kids can even grow up into adults and respect that their parents did it and thank them for keeping us as well mannered children and not letting us run wild like a lot of parents do now.

It honestly sounds like the spanking was unnecessary in your case, as your parents actually took steps to discipline you instead of simply punishing you.

My mother did everything you you described your parents doing, just not the spanking part. I'm a well mannered, productive adult now. Sorry, but the spanking doesn't do anything, its the time you put in correcting the behavior and most parents who spank don't put in that time.

You mean your ex-mother, right? This is FML after all.
