Today, I decided it was time to start looking for my own place and finally gain my full independence. My mom agreed happily without hesitation, which was surprising, but not anywhere near as surprising as finding out I have one day to get my shit together and leave. FML

Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Same thing different taste
Today, at age eighteen, I finished moving out of my parents' house and into my own. The only person to even remotely give a shit was my sister, and that was only because I was taking the cat with me. FML
Don't go
Today, my mother told me she thinks it is time for me to move into my own place. I agreed with her and went to look at studios/flats online. She later came into my room, saw me looking at places and then got pissed off at me, saying that I hate her for wanting to leave her. FML
Cuckoo
Today, my mom gave me thirty days notice to find an apartment and move out. Why? She's dating my former best friend and wants to move him in, but he won't do it until I'm gone because it would be "awkward." FML
Cut the apron strings
Today, at 30 years-old, I can finally move out. I could have chosen an apartment close to work, but instead I decided to stay close to where my mother lives. Since I told her, she's been complaining that I'm selfish and I'm creating a lot of problems for her by moving so far away. I'll be living half a block from her. FML
Today, I found out my mom can't wait until I turn 18, so she can kick me out and turn my room into a huge closet for all her clothes. FML
New life
Today, after losing my job, my apartment and my man, I had to move back in with my mom, at 37. She’s a total slob; I can’t function without clean, organized spaces. So, hey, at least I have a new full-time job now: cleaning up after her. FML
Countdown
Today, I finally got all of my finances to move out of my house. My mother, instead of being happy for me for moving out of her house, blames me because she needs my rent money, states I will not be happy out in the world and disowned me because I didn't move out when she wanted me to. She wanted me to stay until she was 55. FML
Squatters' rights
Today, I found out the person that I’ve been casually seeing has decided he wants to live with me. I found this out when I asked him to go home after two weeks sleeping over, and he told me he'd already moved out of his mom’s. I sublet a single bedroom and have barely enough room for myself. FML
Today, after telling my parents just exactly what I thought of them and that I was moving out, the person I was supposed to move in with called to say they'd decided they would rather live alone. FML
Unwanted
Today, I found out my mom had been telling everyone how independent I was and just wanted to be left alone. I was homeless when I graduated valedictorian from high school and wondering why no one would let me stay with them, even when it was snowing. Now I know. FML

I wonder if she was planning on kicking you out, that's a bit ironic..

ouch! that's harsh. I'm trying to do the same thing but thankfully I'm being given some time. hopefully it works out and your mom knows you need more than just a day. good luck!

That sucks OP. Try to talk her into needing more time to get a place to live. Get her involved in the search so she sees how hard it is to find a place. If you can't find an apartment today and she still wants you out look onto an extended stay motel (one with a kitchenett to save $$) for a brief stay. Some are cheeper than others. I'm sorry she is being a jerk.

That sucks! I was given an hour to get shit together and leave or my mother would have called the cops to escort me out. (I was accused of being stoned when I wasn't so since wouldn't admit to it - bc I wasn't- she wanted me gone) Sounds to me that much like my mother, your mother is a bitch too. If she really doesn't want you there, then she's most likely a toxic person to be around and you're better off without her. Try contacting the people you know to find a temporary place to stay if you can't get your mom to understand it takes time to find an apartment etc. Wish you the best of luck, Op!

can't kick you out for thirty days and an eviction notice
iwadasn 33
That only applies to landlords, not parents letting their adult children live with them for free.

Depends on the state. The cops told me that if they have established residency (which means they have to have spent two weeks at the premises, they can establish residency) you need an eviction notice. It depends on the state how long it takes to establish residency and how many days they have. This is also extended to parents kicking out their adult children.

33, you're totally right. OP's mother sounds like a narcissist. The fact the OP was surprised that his mother "took it well" hints that she's probably pretty controlling and self-centered

Cutting contact for a couple months isn't bad and could be healthy and good for him. It could also help the mother realize she's gonna lose him forever and could help.

It's actually illegal to kick you out with only one day's notice.

Yeah not unless he has a proper tenancy agreement with his mother, which is unlikely. Under normal circumstances, assuming you're a legal adult your parents can kick you out whenever the hell they want.
