Today, a very good friend of mine said he had a question to ask me. Jokingly, I threw my arms around his neck and said, "Oh yes, yes, a thousand times yes!" When I sat back down, I saw tears in his eyes, and he said, "You've made me the happiest man alive" as he pulled a small box out of his coat. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Same thing different taste
Today, my best friend, the man who I've been in love with for nine years, finally told me he loves me and wants to spend the rest of his life with me. Unfortunately, it was while he was using me to practice proposing to his girlfriend. FML
Today, my boyfriend got on one knee and started talking about how we met. Knowing what was coming, I started tearing up, absolutely sure he was going to propose. Just as I was about to say yes, he quickly stood up and yelled "HAH, JUST KIDDING". FML
It's the thought that counts…
Today, I finally had a man say, "I love you" to me in a sincere tone. It was a customer, who was high, over the phone. I said it back. FML
Today, I finally had the guts to tell my best friend that I like him more than just as a friend. I was about to tell him when he excitedly told me that he met the love of his life yesterday. FML
Today, my boyfriend told me he loved me. I asked why, and he said, "Because sometimes you look good, and you buy me stuff." FML
Today, after 8 years, I confessed one of my best friends I've been in love with him since we were kiddies. His answer was "Don't worry, I won't stop talking to you." FML
PSA: Don't be this guy
Today, I confessed my feelings to the love of my life. She laughed and said, “Nah, you’re like a brother to me, I can’t see you that way.” This after I drained my wallet for her birthday, brought her flowers and comforted her when her dog passed away, and fixed her car every time it broke down. FML
What's so funny?
Today, I said to my significant other, "I think I'm a pretty good catch." She started laughing so heavily that tears came out of her eyes. FML
Seize the day
Today, a guy that I've been friends with for almost 20 years, and for whom I have never shown even the slightest bit of romantic interest in, confessed his love for me. In front of everyone we know, at mine and my fiancé's engagement party. FML
It's the thought that counts, or something
Today, I gave a girl I like a $200 diamond necklace to express how much she means to me. She gave me a hug and told me she didn't want to lose me as a friend. Nor did she want to lose her new necklace. Today, I got a $200 hug. FML

Translation: "Wow that sucks for him. Well you should wait until he's finished asking first. That's like me asking my girlfriend if she wanted to spend the rest of our lives aggravating me, and she stops listening at "Spend the rest of our lives." Lol, bad example." ... It's like a whole different language. OP that must be incredibly awkward. I know you didn't see that coming, and you didn't even know he liked you. Somehow I want to say FYL and YDI at the same time.

Honestly, she doesn't deserve. She had no idea, it was just a joke.

Oh no. That's so terrible, for you and him. Poor thing. It's not your fault for not realizing how he felt, and for joking with him. I hope you can work this out.

Uh. What the hell? Jokingly? I don't get it... how was... I really don't understand how what you did was supposed to be funny in any way, shape, or form. And I'm extremely easily amused. Can someone explain to me her joke? Oh but don't worry, your new situation is extremely amusing to me right now. I also wonder what you mean by "platonic" ... you mean your friend with benefits or someone who is a romanticist? Either way, I still don't get your joke. Were you later going to say "oh I thought you'd ask me to marry you" if he wasn't? ... Or something like that? But... then he'd think you'd like him to and then you'd still be stuck in this situation... I really do not understand your aim at all. It doesn't even seem like stupid/random humor ("Your mom goes to college").

exactly. it brought me to the conclusion that they talked this sort of thing before, and she probably always brushed it off. it just seems too out of the blue, and the fact that she illustrates she was joking must indicate it was something she expected in a way. and i think shes saying platonic now to illustrate she wasnt interested. btw platonic is nonsexual

It's not that complicated: Guy: I have a question Girl(as if he was proposing): YES, A THOUSAND TIMES YES!! Guy: Haha, you wish, I was asking about [some mundane topic] Girl(jokingly): awww [conversation continues] Of course, that's not how it went, but that's how she planned it.
Starchild21 3
it doesnt matter how she thought this one would go it still seems like she dealt with it before. if he really is her platonic friend he woulda conveyed his feelings in some way, and i feel that she forgot he was interested until it was too late. but then again im just readin between the lines

I don't think you know what platonic means. It is the complete absence or romantic feelings, i.e. he never told her that he loved her.

Given that she used the term 'good platonic friend' means that she viewed him just as a friend, and assumed that he viewed her in the same way. So she 'jokingly' put her arms around him and said something passionate because in her frame of mind, there was no way that he could be interested in her, and was sure he would see her actions as kidding around. I've made jokes before about my mate being a 'sexy beast' but I would no way in hell actually expect him to turn around and declare that he secretly liked me... it just wouldn't even be worth considering. That was the same situation here. They were such good friends that she simply couldn't consider the chance of him having feelings for her.

Ah, right, I actually read wrong lol Fail on my part for not remembering my vocab, looking it up, and reading the wrong thing. So, okay, now I am wondering if he was platonic before or if she is just saying that in effect of how she feels about him? If it's the former, her little joke makes sense. If it's the latter, then her joke could have had dire repercussions even if it did turn out how she wanted. But I still don't see how it's really all that funny. Does she think it's one of those cutesy jokes, or something? And it's like starchild said, they had to have... mentioned it somehow... because I don't see how he could have possibly connected it otherwise (except that he was in love with her). "YES YES [blahblah]" "... "Yes" what? I was asking about [topic]." So her plan was a pretty stupid, probably going to backfire one. [edit] It's one thing to joke about "sexy beast" - that's direct. A passionate "YES YES YES" is fairly vague, in my opinion, unless they had mentioned it at some point.

i do know what platonic means, i just think she said it in the fml to reinforce her views on marrying him, thats all, but i do believe it isnt as big a surprise as she made it

to be honest, i think the 'joke' part of it was that she pulled a jane bennet, with the "yes, yes, a thousand times yes." it's a quote from pride and prejudice. maybe they watched it together and laughed at that line, so she thought it would be fitting.
Starchild21 3
great point exit, i didnt know it was a line in pride and prejudice. (the indian girl version was the best imo lol, i think it was bride and prejudice or something). good analysis

It's actually a very famous quote. It wouldn't be that hard to think that the guy would not get that it was a complete joke without having talked about it before.
girlygirl666 0
Holy Shit! You're that ******* dense?! That's sad.
theanonimouse 0
She also could have been joking about how seriously he was taking this "question." Like if a guy friend of mine came up to me and was like, "Look... I have a question to ask you...", I'd probably joke around with him about a proposal, too - though I would have never guessed that that was what was actually on his mind.
DameGreyWulf 1
I know it's a "famous quote," but it still struck me as a dumb plan since... I dunno... doesn't seem to me like a guy would see "Pride and Prejudice" or connect to it immediately. I know I never have; I'm not interested in that crap. If they watched it together... who the crap watches a romantic movie with their platonic friends, even ones of the same gender (that aren't les/gay)? I guess I'm just weird.

Today, after calling up all my friends and relatives to tell them that I was finally engaged to the girl that I'd silently been pining over for years now, I got a call from my "fiancee", that was only four words long. "Wait. You were serious?" FML
