Today, I went out with my best friend, his girlfriend, and a girl they've been wanting to introduce to me. I thought they wanted to set us up, but it turns out they're a throuple and wanted me to be the first to know. I think I'm the first fourth wheel in history. FML

Today, I met up with a couple I know, who wanted to introduce me to someone. I thought they were setting me up with her, but no. They were coming out as polyamorous, and she was their new girlfriend. FML
Today, I invited my girlfriend to go eat out, hoping to put her in a really romantic mood. She decided to tell her friend, who then invited herself and another couple along. I ended up being made fifth wheel, and had to sit alone at an adjacent table. FML
Today, my boyfriend introduced me as a friend to one of his friends. FML
Today, I went a double date with my coworker, his girlfriend, and her friend. After some drinks, her best friend stopped including me in conversations. We got back to my place and she was trying to fuck both of them, and ignored me all night. This is the third girl this happened with. FML
Today, I was set up on a blind date. When I arrived, the person waiting for me was a woman. It appears that my friends have always thought I was a lesbian, and that they 'played along' when I talked about guys. FML
Today, I found out my boyfriend is bringing his friends on our trip. I'm now the third wheel on the romantic trip we've planned for a year. FML
Today, I introduced my girlfriend to a female friend of mine, because I thought they would get along. Apparently they get along better than I expected; she dumped me for the other girl. FML
Today, the girl I thought I was dating introduced me to her boyfriend. We've gone on dates and have slept in the same bed, but it turns out she thought I was her gay best friend and was planning to introduce me to her boyfriend's brother. FML
Today, the guy I'm in love with invited me out to a gig with him and his friends, only to then try to set me up with his friend. FML
Today, my boyfriend introduced me to his friends as his "sex partner." FML

I know you may have been surprised, or confused, and that is understandable. But they really were probably making a very respextful show of honor and trust in you to come out to you. I would just talk to your friends, and be supportive. If you ask qurstions kindly and respectfully, your questions may help them know what sort of things to expect from others. That may help them with future conversations. Anyway, how nice for your friends, and you!

Technically- even though there are terms like triad and quartet that most of the polyamorous communities agree on as being "more correct"- you can call a polyamorous group anything. As long as the group doesn't object, and you aren't doing it to make fun of or insult them, that is. Apparently "throuple" has become more accepted and used since I was researching polyamory, as an example. Some people also call their polyamorous group a "pack" so that they don't have to find a new term if they gain or lose partners.

I think it's time to retire "[x#] wheel" as the term given that four wheels is normal for a car and many types of vehicles have larger numbers then that. Might I suggest "spare wheel" instead?
