Today, I had to cover for a coworker who didn't turn up for work. He's always late for work and I was pissed off about having to cover for him again, so I said to my colleagues, "He better be either in hospital or dead." Turns out he was dead. FML

Today, my coworker called in to say that he couldn't make it to work today because he was in a coma and asked if I could cover his shift. This isn't the first time he's tried to use this excuse. FML
Today, as a CNA, I had to go through the belongings of a patient. His phone rang and I answered - it was his boss. As I explained, he cut me off and said to "drop the act" and "he better be there now or he's fired". He was pronounced dead-on-arrival. FML
Today, I was bored out of my mind at work. I told my coworker he was lucky to be leaving early. I forgot the reason of his early departure was to go to his grandfather's funeral. FML
Today, I got a heads-up that my boss suffered a death in the family, but was coming into work anyway. I thought he'd be depressed, but it seems he deals with grief with anger instead. I found that out when he yelled at me, threatening to rip my spine out my ass over a typo I made in a report. FML
Today, the really hot guy that works in the same building as me came to work after being away for the past two days. I said, "Look who finally decided to come to work!" His response was, "I had a death in the family, thanks." FML
Today, after a long couple of months working non-stop, I finally got someone to cover my shift. Turns out she was joking, and when I didn't show up for work, I was fired. FML
Today, my subordinate didn't come to work. I called him several times, and it seemed like he just overslept, which has happened before. As I was filing the report about this, the police came to interrogate me because this guy took his life last night and blamed us in his note. I have no idea what I did wrong. FML
Today, I covered for my friend at work because he said he was having car troubles and was going to be late. Two hours into the shift, I got a call from my roommate asking why my girlfriend had moved out. Turns out, I'd covered my friend's shift so he could help my girlfriend move out behind my back. FML
Today, at work, I was about to close a big sale, when a coworker rushed over and said there was a call for me in the office. He heavily implied my mom had died, and I rushed out. After I figured out there was no call and that my mom was fine, he'd already stolen my sale and the commission. FML
Today, at my job as a hotel housekeeper, I accidentally entered the room of someone who hadn't left yet. To my horror, the man inside was having a massive heart attack. I just found out he passed away, despite immediate medical intervention. FML

I remember when took this class, Working with Children II, last year and I absolutely hated the teacher who taught it, and I recall my myself wishing she would drop dead. This year I was forced to take the class, Working with Children III with the same teacher, because AP Bio was full. Turns out the teacher I hated and was supposed to have this year was diagnosed with ovarian cancer over the summer and would be out for a long time. No, shes not dead or anything (thank god), but OP, it's still not you're fault, it's just a coincidence, because you had nothing to with your coworker's death.

I say shit like that all the time. Same thing with the "You're adopted" joke. It's just a horrible coincidence. Act like you're ashamed for an hour and move on with work. If anyone at your office has half a sense of humor, they'll understand that you didn't actually want him to be hospitalized or dead.

Same thing happened in my high school many years back. The students would always joke about kids being dead if they were absent.

Laugh it off. It's funny. I once heard a coworker saying that in her grandmas will she would leave her no money if she had a tattoo, and I told her to kill her grandma and then get ink.. Turns out her grandma HAD died. Poor taste comments are always hilarious.
