Hey, well, happy birthday anyway
Today, my parents took me out to dinner. I thought they were taking me because it's my birthday. Turns out they are getting divorced. They forgot it was my birthday. FML

Fall
Dead leaves, the first cold of the season and an umbrella flipped inside out: fall, the season of grace.
Today, two days before my birthday, my parents drove three hours to visit me at school and take me out to lunch. I assumed that it was to celebrate my birthday. They told me they are getting divorced. FML
Today, it's my 16th birthday. My parents forgot about it, and planned a weekend out of town. I was alone on my birthday. FML
Today, I found out I can't go to my best friend's birthday party. To cheer me up, my parents decided to take me and my brother to my favorite pizzeria for dinner. When I was ready and went downstairs, I discovered they left already. They forgot me. FML
Today, I found out that my parents forgot to invite me out to eat with them. I found this out when my mom invited my sister right in front of me. FML
Today, my parents were supposed to take me out to eat for my birthday, but since their favorite child wasn't with us, I instead got a mini order of tots from Sonic as my birthday meal/present. FML
Today, my grandparents took me out for dinner for my birthday. After singing, "Happy birthday dear…" they froze. I had to say my own name because they'd forgotten it. FML
Today, my parents forgot it was my birthday. They ordered me to scrub the common bathroom, and when I asked if they'd remembered, my dad's reaction was, "Oh! Really?" My mom's was, "I thought that it was next week." What lovely parents I have. FML
Today, it's my birthday. My dad was supposed to take me to get a tattoo, but instead he went to the bar, got drunk, and told me how I was the biggest mistake he and my mom have ever made. FML
Today, it's my birthday. I went downstairs expecting birthday greetings from my parents. Instead, they just sat on the couch saying nothing. Thinking they forgot, I casually reminded them. My mom scoffed and said, "Go do the dishes." FML
Today, my dad and mom and I were going out to eat dinner. My dad wanted a romantic dinner just with my mom so he told me to make an excuse not to go. I did, which ended up as a huge fight, grounded and phone taken away. My dad just stood there in the background putting thumbs up. FML

There is no good time to find out your parents are getting divorced, but the timing sucked! The divorce is not about you, it’s about the very personal relationship between your parents. They just cannot make it work. You are still their son and will always be. And each of your parents will still feel about you what they have always felt toward you. Right now they are going through a tough time. Whatever happens, do not take sides of one parent against another. You do not know and may never know all the facts and feelings that led to the divorce. Wise parents will avoid putting their children in the middle of their squabbles. But sometimes one or both parents are too human and wind up trying to use the children against each other. Often the better parent will look the worse at first because they do not try to make a play for the children’s sympathy while the other tells things to the child intended to get their sympathy. Do not fall into the trap of taking one side over the other - That just makes their relationship problems yours. My parents first divorced when I was in college and my brothers and sister were young. They got remarried and then divorced again a few years later. So do not think that if you can somehow get your parents to reconcile that everything will be good. It just doesn’t work that way. And I have been divorced so I have seen it from both sides. It’s a tough situation but your children and your parents will always be that.

hate to tell you this, but Parents NEVER ACTUALLY forget their childrens birthdays. When parents say that it is because they figure said child is now OLD ENOUGH to not have a birthday party every year. beyond Happy birthday on Facebook I haven't had birthday party/celebration since middle school.

You seem to be a very understanding person. I'm sorry that things didn't work, sometimes theres just no options and you're left hanging without a clue on what to do.

My dad had the worst timing. My grandmother told him she was leaving his dad. Minutes before getting on a plane to Vietnam to fight in the war.

Take it as an early lesson of “the world doesn’t revolve around you” and “everyone is having their own battle” *stated not in a dick-ish way.
