Today, I decided to finally bleach my teeth. After 45 minutes of stinging pain, my teeth are still yellow as ever. My gums, on the other hand, are opaque white. FML

Today, I started the bleaching treatments that my dentist recommended. Now, my two front teeth have ultra white spots, the rest of my teeth are still yellow and the roof of my mouth is burned. FML
Today, I decided to try whitening my teeth for the first time. I applied the strips to my teeth and decided to lay down and wait for the thirty required minutes to pass. I accidentally fell asleep and woke up three hours later. My teeth are still in excruciating pain and are covered in white streaks. FML
Today, I tried whitening my teeth with an off-brand product. It didn't whiten my teeth, but it did burn parts of my gums off. FML
Today, I realised my teeth are so stained that they look cleaner when I've not brushed them. FML
Today, my teeth feel dirty. Just go brush them, right? Actually, I just did. Thoroughly and meticulously, for several minutes, until both my arm and my gums hurt. Yep, still feel dirty. FML
Today, I went to the orthodontist's to get my braces tightened, and I chose baby blue bands. Turns out they make my teeth look extremely yellow. Only a month and a half to go. FML
Today, I went to the dentist. After drilling my teeth for what seemed like hours, he gave me a long speech about how if I continue to smoke, the yellowing of my teeth won't be the only problem. I don't smoke. I never have. FML
Today, I was able to get dental care for the first time in 4 years. I had been going through all the hygiene motions, but without professional input all that time, no one was there to warn me about the sour candies I had been eating, and how they ruined your teeth anyway. My teeth are well beyond salvageable now. FML
Today, I tried to bleach my upper lip hair. I now have a bright red mustache. FML
Today, during a brutal two and half hour dental procedure, the dentist kept saying my gums were inflamed, and bleeding a lot. The clichéd "You need to floss more!" tirade. After she was done, my gums were purple, bruised, and had a visible cut on them. But sure, the bleeding was from me not flossing enough. FML

Teeth bleaching is the worst thing you could do to your teeth and gums. If you want whiter teeth, make a dentist appointment for a proper teeth cleaning. There's no short cuts to decent dental hygiene.

Actually tooth whitening isn't terrible for you, your teeth, or your gums if done properly in a dental office. Proper oral hygiene does not lift stains, it just prevents gingivitis and cavities, a cleaning is called a prophylaxis because it's preventative, as the word implies. Proper whitening is gone with a gingival barrier in offices. The worst to happen is sensitivity which, in the worst cases, can last a month, the norm is a couple days. I work in the field, have used in office whitening on multiple patients, and have never had inferior results with proper application.

Exactly this. I am currently sitting here with bleaching trays in, fitted trays made by my dentist, and the bleaching gel from them. The first few times is a learning process but it takes more than just one application of home-whitening to see a difference. I just finished my third tube and will likely get another pack of 3 after 6 months to give my teeth (and gums) a rest from the chemicals. The trick is getting the gel ONLY on your teeth and not on your gums. I learned that with the first attempt at this. Please please see your dentist and get directions from them for home-whitening or let them do it. It's much better in the long run.

Tooth enamel, the outer layer, is white. The dentin beneath it is naturally yellow. Tooth bleaching works by dissolving a tiny amount of (presumably) stained enamel. If the enamel is thin, the yellow of the dentin shows through. You REALLY should’ve consulted a dentist before stripping all the enamel off your teeth.

At least they remained opaque. If your gums went translucent or transparent, that would be super-creepy — your mouth would look like an x-ray *cringe*
