Great start
Today, I was starting my new job in the city. A man with a torn suit on came up to me and asks me for spare change. In a hurry to catch a taxi, I declined and rushed to catch one. At the office, my boss was late. About an hour later, I found out the man in the suit was my boss. He was attacked. FML

I'm sure he would understand.

Yes, it sounds like a weird ask. Recognizing the OP as another professional, he might ask to use his phone or share his cab. Asking for spare change seems like a humiliating and inefficient way to get enough money for cab fare. Why isn't he calling the cops?

He's probably going to be very happy to know you don't waste money on bums. You can be trusted to be very thrifty with the company's assets. I'd say you passed his little test with flying colors!

Why would he be asking for spare change?

I’m assuming when he got attacked his wallet and cell phone was probably stolen, so he has no way of calling or a way to pay for a ride.

There’s no way you could’ve known. Sorry OP!
