Today, I called my mom to tell her that I finally got my period. There was an awkward pause. She was at work. I was on speakerphone. FML
Today, I got my first period. My dad bought me a card and had everyone in my family sign it. FML
Today, my mum, who always wanted more kids than just me, started crying because I'm not pregnant with her first grandchild yet. I'm 16, and this all started because I got my period and I asked to borrow one of her tampons because I'd ran out of my own. FML
Today, my mom made a Facebook post about me starting my period and for everyone to be nice to me. FML
Today, after my mother, who was a loving and gentle soul, died, I’ve moved in permanently with my stepmom, whom I’d never met. Her very first words to me were, “Let me make one thing perfectly clear: I am your mother now. If you make even ONE mistake, I will literally rip your fucking throat out.” FML
Today, I called my mom to tell her that I'm coming over for a visit. She answered: 'Why? What do you need? Food? Money? I'm not going to help you! You're a grown woman!' And she hung up. I just found out that I'm pregnant and she was the first person I wanted to share it with. FML
Today, my mom told me how lucky I was to inherit her "asymptomatic" periods. It's true, I don't get cramps, bloating or mood swings with my periods. Nope, just excruciatingly painful diarrhea. Thanks, mom. FML
Today, my mom told me I'm the reason she's going to kill herself one day. FML
Today, I had to go through the embarrassment and pain of telling my parents I was pregnant. I took the test and it came out positive and I was freaking out. I got grounded for the rest of the year and they're really disappointed in me. Five minutes ago, I got my period. FML
Today, I found my daughter sobbing and trying to stick a wad of gauze to her vagina. She was having her first period. FML

Sorry your stepmom sucks so bad. If you have a good relationship with your father, tell him. If he's a good father he'll get you what you need and be there for you. If not, and you need adult help talk to a trusted female relative or even teacher if need be. Best wishes to you in a tough family situation!

I would start off with pads, tbh, they are easier to use. I’m assuming you don’t know what kind of flow you have. So normal size pads should do it, I would go with long to be safe. Change them when they are 60-80% red. Extra long for overnight if you notice you change pads often. Take a couple in your bag where ever you go. Even when it’s not the time of your month. Keep track of how long they last. A normal cycle is 28 days, my cycle is 31. So I recommend a period tracking app. So you just have to record them, and it’ll remind you when you have a period coming up. Midol helps with cramping. It’ll effect your mood, and your body in ways that’ll take time to understand. Tampons are more difficult. If you want to use those, I would start off with normal size as well. Do not keep them in over 8 hours, 6 hours to play it safe. If they come out “dry” or hurts to pull out, go with light tampons. There will be instructions on the box on how to insert them etc. Go onto YouTube for better / verbal tips tricks and advice. You are not alone. No matter how much it feels like it is at times.
