Halloween
A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.
Today, I discovered that my Dad's family very much supports Donald Trump. They tried to convince me to support his campaign by donating money. We're not even American. FML
Today, my family’s usual Sunday dinner turned into a shouting match over politics. My uncle called me a “brainwashed socialist,” my cousin accused me of being a “capitalist pig,” and my grandma just sat there eating pie, which made me want to call her a "fence-sitting centrist", which is when I realized that maybe we shouldn't ever talk about politics again. FML
Today, my father said I only voted for Biden "because I watch the news." He's a hardcore Trumpster. FML
Today, I took my boyfriend to a family dinner. It went well, until my dad got drunk and started telling everyone about how "midgets" are assholes and are ruining America. FML
Today, I had to go to a big dinner with my insane relatives. Highlights of conversation included my sister telling us about the "country of Iowa", my dad accusing me of faking my chronic fatigue syndrome, and my grandpa claiming that Nelson Mandela is the Antichrist. FML
Today, after much reluctance due to fear of causing a huge debate, I finally posted something on Facebook about the presidential debates. However, the post sparked an argument with my mom's childhood best friend, that ended with her telling me that my dad isn't actually my dad. FML
Today, I got dragged along to a family dinner. Some idiot invited my douchebag vegan uncle, who spent half the night making condescending remarks and lecturing us on how disgusting it was to have steak on offer at the table. A fistfight eventually erupted, and the cops were called. FML
Today, my parents had a loud argument over who is worse in bed. FML
Today, my dad and I got into an argument, and he ended up calling me a son of a bitch. My mom heard and started arguing with him over him calling her a bitch. Three hours later, I'm now staying at my gran's house with my mom and hoping her threats of a divorce weren't for real. FML
Today, I introduced my dad to my boyfriend. I gave my dad the middle finger and he thumped me on the head, as we've been playfully doing for years. My boyfriend got all mad and tried to fight my dad. FML

How are there more YDIs unless you were getting in the middle of it?

Maybe people are more likely to feel hurt from experiencing constant ridicule from family members.

US politics is proof that human stupidity has no lower limit. Why do you even care what those morons say?

Group A) Trump and DeSantis supporters + Group B) People who know to not engage with those who can't respect different opinions.

If your family allows political ideology to divide you and them, eventually cut them out your life. I believe in relationship being put above politics. Anyone that cannot follow that motto is lacking in maturity in that department.

Agreed. I've been on opposite sides of issues with both friends and family, we've never let it get in the way of our relationships though. We recognise we don't see eye-to-eye on certain things, talk a little about them and then go about our day. Sometime it gets heated, sure, but at the end of the day, no damage. Never understood how people can make their political stance such a large part of their identity that they ruin relationships. Then again, for me, living in a place with multiple political parties and the fact that my opinions aren't purely only "left" or "right" (I'm quite scattered) probably helps.

it is weird how many people make political and religious views their personality. I know and work with a number of people who's entire being is their faith or political standing. TBC I'm not talking "also a christian" I mean every waking minute is about how Christian they are and their work is done in the lords name or every discussion with the political side will be about how much they hate/love their party leader and happenings related to it. feels like people without a personality make argument material their personality (and rarely learn more than enough to argue over it)

Use their politics to get them back to their argument. With luck, it will come to blows and they'll beat some sense into each other.
