Bonding moment

Today, I wanted my son to take a break from his comic books and be more active, so I converted our big backyard into a home-sized football field, hoping this would motivate him to finally get into sports. While I had him running drills, I heard him grumble, "This is why mom left you." FML

Halloween

A failed costume, stolen candy and a very real scare: Halloween, the one night when fear is allowed.

Same thing different taste

If he doesn’t like sports, you’re just driving a wedge between the two of you. Why don’t you try learning about what he DOES like to do instead of having him run “drills”?

Drills are a terrible way to get into sports. Let them play badly at first and then explain how they can improve with drills. Did you wife leave you because your drills were boring?

Why didn’t you ask HIM what he wanted to do to get more active?

Next time you could always try waving your bare boobs at him. It apparently doesn't work but at least it should make him laugh.

If the gentleman has boobs big enough to wave, he might need the drills more than his son.

RichardPencil’s burner account eh?

Our children do not always have the same interests as we do. It’s long past time you learned that. My Dad was fairly athletic - In High School he was on the basketball team and the wrestling team. Even Mom had been on the Women’s basketball team. Dad also had a gift for working on and repairing things (he eventually became an appliance and AC repairman/installer). Despite looking exactly like my Dad, I had absolutely no interest in sports. I loved reading and I helped my dad do repair work as a child and teen. I remember once that Dad said to me when I was an older teen that he didn’t understand my lack of interest in sports, but he had noticed that like him I was good at working on and building things and even loved history like he did. I became a successful electronic engineer but I always treasured the times as a boy I had spent time with my Dad helping him work on appliances. You are a fool if you think forcing your son to run exercises will make him like athletics. It will only reinforce his dislike for athletics and for you. There have to be other interests that you might share, but you won’t find out without listening in a non-judgmental way.

Want to get closer to him, do something HE likes.

Stop pushing your failed dreams of grandeur onto your son, Al Bundy.

Or worse, Ted Bundy.

All you have succeeded in doing is making your son dislike spending time with you. Running drills isn't in any way fun. If you want your kid to be active, allow him to have FUN while doing so. Continue on this path and not only will you drive a permanent wedge in your relationship, he will also hate ALL exercise, and it will be your fault.

May I suggest a better username for Anonymous- how about "The Great Santini"?

Wow, forcing an introverted kid to like sports is a seriously dumbass move. Did you even bother to ask him what activities he might enjoy?
