Man or woman?

Today, I am jobless after graduation. Ironic, since when I started college with my education degree, I was congratulated, told of the teacher shortage in my state, and how quickly I would be able to find a job. Three years in, the economy tanks, and the state issues a teacher hiring freeze. FML

I agree, your life sucks (13148) - you totally deserved it (1164)

so move out of state. it's not that hard

#2 - On 02/04/2010 at 6:30am by guckylynn

I bet the OP is under contract to stay in North Carolina. The same thing has happened to most people involved in the Teaching Fellows program, which promises to fund teachers' educations in exchange for four years of indentured servitude to the state. Teaching Fellows lures students in by promising and REQUIRING a minimum four-year position in a school system, and is now reneging on its contracts. And because they can't fulfill their end of the bargain anymore, some graduates are even being asked to pay back some or all of the tuition for which Teaching Fellows claimed responsibility. This isn't easy without a job.

OP, you're not alone on this. FOL.

#30 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:12am by kelseygrammar

yep, I'm back in school for something outside of education for exactly this reason. Not cool.

#33 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:33am by jalepinos

Texas will hire you in a heart beat I dnt got a degree on education and I could still get hired for teaching :)

#57 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:05pm by o0XMzMayX0o

MzMay: This is you:

"Texas will hire you in a heart beat I dnt got a degree on education and I could still get hired for teaching" :)

This is me:

-Texas will hire you in a heartbeat. I don't have a degree in education and I could still get hired as a teacher.

-Texas will hire you in a heartbeat! I didn't get a degree in education and I could still get hired as a teacher!

-Texas will hire you in a heartbeat. I haven't got a degree in education and I could still get hired as a teacher.

Just three examples of how you could have successfully written that sentence and not ended up with every Texan parent wondering what school employed you. (and every college student wondering what college graduated you.) :) You, madam, are a moron and everything that's WRONG with our education system. I really, really hope you were kidding. *fingers crossed*

^^ FTW ^^

#64 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:39pm by protooler31

Who was in charge of that contract? This is why i hate bureaucracy, it doesn't know how to handle real life.

#74 - On 02/04/2010 at 2:30pm by 42billybob

The FML says nothing about a contract. Teachers don't usually get hired in the middle of the year. No one quits or retires mid-year. It's all deaths, sudden illnesses, and pregnancies. OP should give it time and try to find a job for fall, when there are actually openings. My state has a hiring freeze too and I graduate in May. It doesn't mean you can't get ANY jobs. If they HAVE to have teachers, they'll hire.

sickjay

#90 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:29pm by Billbo23

Ummmmm actually moving out of state can be expensive and complicated....

#96 - On 02/05/2010 at 2:55am by teacher411

Grow up #60. The person you were replying to was far more helpful than you were. You don't know as much as you think you do about the education system in Texas or the problems that plague it. There are only about three people in the world who fully comprehend the intricacies of how education is funded in Texas. Being theatrical and accusing someone of being solely responsible for complicated public policy is really unproductive.

By the way, your post could use a few improvements. You should brush up on the formal usage of parentheses. They aren't required for what you are trying to accomplish. A couple of your sentences are badly structured. Starting a sentence with a conjunction ('and') is iffy. It makes it difficult to follow your thinking. This all goes back to your use of parentheses.

#99 - On 02/05/2010 at 5:11pm by saaaammmmm

That sucks OP.
But yeah, its just the american way to start cutting down expenses on education as soon as possible.
(Not trying to be anti-american or anything, its just that my mother and several of her friends had to leave the US to find a job as a teacher for basically this same reason. It wont be the last time that'll happen).

#3 - On 02/04/2010 at 6:45am by Scourge87

I bet some "correctional" facility is hiring though!!
Sad We CUT education and then have too/WANT TOO increase Prison spending!
While ALSO cutting Mental Health services!
Vut a couwntwry LOL

#15 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:04am by Cristaderzi

Yay!
Let's give our criminals money! Who cares if they'll be there for life, they need career training, too!
Let's educate them, so when they get out at 50, they can get a job. Not the youth, though. Who needs a job at 21? Lets help criminals survive the real world, not kids just entering it.

#47 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:01am by dudeitsdanny

Yeah actually there are teaching jobs available at the correctional facilities. LOL

#97 - On 02/05/2010 at 2:56am by teacher411

If the unions were willing to work with the states these things wouldn't be so severe. Cuts need to be made sometimes. The unions refuse cuts so things like hiring freezes are the only things states can do. They can't just print money like the Fed.

You should start harassing the local teachers union.

Unions suck - especially civil servant unions

#5 - On 02/04/2010 at 6:51am by boarder700

Dear #5, that has to be one of the best written yet dumb and most self-centered arguments I have seen lately. Were you born as a company directive or owner or something ?

#7 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:19am by Scourge87

You'd might think that unless it was your job that was being harassed unions are there to protect people's job's it's what they started out to do .

#9 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:43am by mps1969

I actually changed job titles at the last hospital I worked for because I refused to be a part of the union. In some cases, unions are a good thing. In others, they can be absolutely detrimental.

When some outside union comes in that knows nothing about how your company/hospital works and spreads lies to try and get people to vote them in, I have issues.

Children's in San Diego had SEIU come in and blatantly twist the truth. They took advantage of language barriers. They were downright dispicable.

I knew I would never be a person to walk away from a job because some union official was forcing me to. Also, SEIU was going to cost people in regular office jobs more in dues than nurses were paying for their in-house union.

I think in-house unions are the only way to go. They actually know the individual issues and address them accordingly

#65 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:43pm by idkweird

you must live in Alabama. that's a problem here.

#8 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:41am by iButler

I actually thought Lenoir County was hiring teachers Oo

#10 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:45am by TrinityisLife

yeah I love in north carolina too and the school budget is a mess

#11 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:47am by amart402

I see all my fellow NC residents are already talking about this. But unless you do HAVE to stay in NC I say head somewhere else. NC has some of the lowest teacher salaries in the country.

#52 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:29am by npk88

A lot of states are having that same problem right now. It's a side effect of NCLB and the bad economy. But I'm not going to get all political. Saying FYL will suffice.

BTW #6 that was a good point and one of very few comments I have seen you make that didn't involve sex or obscenity in some way. I'm impressed and worried. ;)

#12 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:52am by ImaginaryFoe

thank god the school levy in Clark county passes every year

#26 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:46am by saltz

Welcome to the world of teaching in the US. There are a whole slew us that have just graduated or are going to graduate in a few months. What we've been told in AZ is to go towards the smaller towns where no one really wants to teach, because hey its a job. Also, try the absolute low SES districts, they get more funding for being title 1 and can then hire teachers with that money. It will soon turn around because they can't continue to have 33 students in a class and expects awesome test score like they were before.

#13 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:56am by shinyred

oh stop complaining it's the same everywhere

#14 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:01am by grog

Yeah, no offense, but do you know how many thousands could've posted basically the same FML these last few years? Heck, my mom's there right now, and I was there just a year ago.

#32 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:27am by BeeSkwaird

Seriously. I have friends with good degrees in *many* fields who are in the same boat. You have to have patience, and you may not get to work in your desired field right away. Just keep a good resume and keep trying. You can't get frustrated if you don't have a career within 6 months of graduation, these days!

#82 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:54pm by tisiphone

Why would you want to become a teacher anyway?
Terrible, terrible job.

#16 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:04am by amy397123

I'm sure all the ones who had you in their class would emphatically agree. ;)

#24 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:39am by perdix

Too bad I was a straight A student, faggot.

#100 - On 02/06/2010 at 4:03am by amy397123

Doesn't pretty much every new graduate have the same problem? Stop complaining and find some menial job to sustain yourself till the end of the crisis!

#18 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:22am by g3rusz

Can you teach me how to love? My robotic heart cannot create this thing you humans call love.

Calm down dear. Caprica's only a tv show! Don't take it so seriously.

#21 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:30am by Jimboom

Wait, hiring freeze?
Could someone please explain this to me?
I'm an idiot. :0

#20 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:29am by Hiropon

Hiring freeze=not hiring anyone 'till it's over. In a nutshell.

#41 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:55am by g3rusz

how is that irony?

#22 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:33am by jinxthejinx

That's what you get for voting for Obama....

#23 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:34am by _whatever_77

um this crisis started towards the end of Bush's reign from his great leadership and the Republican policies.

Obvious racist troll is obvious!!

#45 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:59am by Cristaderzi

How is that racist?
Its ignorant, but not voting for Obama isnt racist.
Do you know who the Green Party's candidate was?
Voting for Obama for being black is also racism, btw

dudeitsdanny: Well said. Thank you.

#67 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:49pm by idkweird

One word: Texas

We have billboards on the freeway in Houston groveling for teachers. Come to the state where BBQ means brisket and leave that ketchup/no-ketchup feud behind

#25 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:44am by perdix

Mmmmmm: brisket. :p

#59 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:20pm by wordgirl

Join the club. I'm looking into going back to school even though I swore i'd rather slit my wrists before going back just to duck out of this economy for a while.

#27 - On 02/04/2010 at 8:54am by txgirl09

Ouch. My sister-in-law had the same problem. She's finally found a job after months of looking.

#29 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:10am by mollymaykitty

Thats not ironic

#31 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:26am by paddyirishman85

for teaching it depends on your state. Texas and Alsaka are the place to go. Avoid the midwest its flooded with teachers.

#34 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:36am by bittersweetheart

Surely you could find some sort of tutoring job.

#35 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:42am by turdburgers

I ran into the same problem, so I just worked as an aide for awhile at a school (sure, it's terrible pay, but good experience and can get you connections in the schools) and then decided to go back and get my master's degree since I wasn't going to get hired as a teacher anytime soon.

#36 - On 02/04/2010 at 9:43am by tarana

That is not ironic, it is a coincidence. Go back to school.

#37 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:11am by Gobsnoglin

Gee, it's been that way for the past 20 years. I still have no clue why people go into teaching. Almost everyone I know of that went to college for teaching....is NOT teaching. OP: I feel for ya, but time to look into other forms of employment.

#38 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:11am by itsme88

FYL for getting an education degree. Did you wash out of the Anthropology program?

#39 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:31am by thighsofglory

YDI for believing you were guaranteed a job. I'm an education major in a family of educators, and no one's job is EVER safe or guaranteed. Whining about it definitely won't help you in the process.

#42 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:57am by g3rusz

Anyway, it's not like your situation is all that uncommon right now, OP. Sure it sucks, but it's no more of an FML than pretty much the entire country is dealing with right now. Get in line, lady; a lot of us are going to be here for a while.

#43 - On 02/04/2010 at 10:57am by blastvortex

Welcome to half of the country. Sorry, but you're nothing special.

#53 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:30am by c0w

Oh man, sorry about that OP.:( Hope things turn around for you.

#54 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:39am by peacockfeather

Welcome to the real world. Seriously, the economy tanked for pretty much everyone. You aren't special. So stop e-whining and try to find a different job.

#55 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:57am by stopwhining

So you have to sling a few burgers. That just means when you finally get that teaching position, kids will recognize you from your previous job. Now get to work so you can help pay my Social Security when I retire.

#56 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:59am by Joceannora

Texas always needs teachers just don't bother coming down to south Texas we have too many. people who wanted to teach down here are having to move to other parts of the state to find a job. but one of the best things to donos get a degree in whatever subject you want to teach then get your teaching certificate so you have a degree in something besides teaching that you can fall back on. or at least that's how alot of teachers here do it.

#58 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:15pm by morgan020

OP: I don't know if you're the kind of person who likes adventure, but you could always move to a foreign country and teach ESL. So many countries desperately need English teachers, and you could really change your life if you did that. I, for one, would jump at the opportunity to teach English in France or Spain, or some other culture and history-rich country. Imagine what you'd derive from the experience. Good luck. :)

#61 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:34pm by wordgirl

find a job in a different country teachig English as a second language. that's what I'm gonna do.

#62 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:36pm by mileycyrusisgay

If OP has a bachelors degree then you could try to go to another country and teach english. This is only what I have heard, but I have read that other countries will sign a contract with you for you to teach english to their citizens for so many years. The requirements as far as I know are: 1) speak english fluently (you will be taught the native language to some degree) 2) have a bachelors degree in...well...anything and 3) have a pulse (this one's vital I'm afraid.)

You could try looking into it, the program I speak of is called the ALT program and is for Japan, but I'm sure there are other countries who do this. Just a thought, Good luck and Godspeed OP!

#63 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:37pm by someone1989

move to a different state and quit whining

#66 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:48pm by emmmilyyy

#68 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:50pm by gottaluvthedorks

This is why I tell people to get into Medical coding. If you love teaching, you can eventually become a teacher while making a whole hell of a lot more than actual teachers.

That or you can become an auditor or a physician liason. Physician liasons actually get to teach the doctors what they need to do.

So many options and such great pay.

#70 - On 02/04/2010 at 12:54pm by idkweird

People really do think that it's easy to get a teaching position- and for some jobs, it is. But I'm going to guess that, like me, you did not specialize in math, and were not an adolescent education major, but an elementary education major.

Then to add in the fact that many teachers with experience were laid off and now twice as many elementary teachers are fighting for half the jobs... despite what half of these fools are saying, moving to a different state doesn't solve the problem. The jobs are tight everywhere.

We're in the same boat- I feel for you, OP.

#72 - On 02/04/2010 at 1:34pm by MissAnthropy2009

You aren't one of my classmates are you? By chance? hahaha

Hahah I just graduated from WCU in December with an elementary degree and can't find anything either. I'm looking and remaining optimistic. Chin up, you'll find something... hopefully we both will!

#73 - On 02/04/2010 at 1:38pm by Ray_Kay

i honestly have no sympathy because a lot of americans are jobless. yes it sucks but millions have the same story including me.. suck it up

#75 - On 02/04/2010 at 2:31pm by edwadokun

I'm in the same boat over here in California. I have 5 years to get my professional credential, two of which is spent in an induction program. I'm already at almost one year without a teaching job....

#76 - On 02/04/2010 at 4:23pm by teacher411

if you're a fellow, then that really sucks. sorry about your situation but nowadays all those "recession proof jobs" (including teaching) aren't so recession proof. people are getting screwed over left and right regardless.

#77 - On 02/04/2010 at 4:25pm by gertrude_08

you wouldn't even get a job. most teachers start with subbing. go substitute until the hiring freeze is over

#80 - On 02/04/2010 at 6:54pm by Spyrunner

I definitely know how you feel. I'm going through the same predicament. I just graduated from a 4 year school with my Bachelor's in teaching and there seems to be no hope. To top it off...I just got a mortgage and now no way to pay for it.

#81 - On 02/04/2010 at 7:45pm by hutzlerad

Dang you should have joined the military ;) I can't smell the economy crisis from a mile away. I own a house, 40 acres, and my 7 project trucks have no payments. Not one iota of college.

When I was in school, they said there was a looming shortage of douchebags. So, I studied Douchebaggery at one of the douchiest institutions in the country and got my B.S.D.B. degree (contrary to popular belief, it is not a Bachelor's of Science, it's a Bullshit Douchebag degree -- accredited by the Massengill Corporation.)

When I got out, boom! The market was flooded with douchebags. I did some graduate work at SEU (Summer's Eve University), but the situation was just as bad when I got out.

Now, there is no work for douchebags, and all I can do it give it away for free here!

#91 - On 02/04/2010 at 11:41pm by perdix

Why dont you work aboard? Like in Canada, England or the Middle East? Strangely, the middle east (the friendly ones) have a preference for white teachers....

Yeah I am from NC too, and our governor did screw over all the future teachers in this state. When I was graduating high school they were telling us that going to school to be an educator was a sure-fire way to get a job in the state, and I know a lot of people did.

#98 - On 02/05/2010 at 12:41pm by weddingbelle

#102 - On 02/06/2010 at 12:59pm by calliebob

You do realize that the economy cannot just completly fail in one year right? In order for the economy to suffer it takes a lot of time! In case you suddenly forgot calliebob, we've had Bush in office for the past eight years. So don't blame it on Obama.

#103 - On 02/07/2010 at 2:24am by sobe23

I’m sick of people using President Bush as a scapegoat. Give the man a break especially in this situation! He always held education in a very high regard and tried his best to better America as he saw fit. As for the original FML post- I sympathize for your job-less. I hope your fortunes (and many others in the same situation) change soon!

#104 - On 02/09/2010 at 11:22pm by hollyann8889

Don't feel bad. Since it was on the upswing in 06 aviation was the hot spot to get into. Now ALL companies are in a hiring freeze and it's impossible to get a job anywhere. I'm expecting the same fate after graduating this year.

#105 - On 02/13/2010 at 4:24pm by ameulema
