Today, I pulled someone over for speeding. He was only 10 over the speed limit so I gave him an $84 fine. It turns out he is a workplace Occupational Health and Safety officer and because I wasn't wearing my high visibilty vest while standing on the side of the road he gave me a $250 fine. FML

Yeah, God forbid he actually did his job. It's scum like you who think it's okay to break the law if it's "only a little."

Yeah I know. Totally. F*ck him for pulling someone over that was going over the speed limit. I hate when cops pull people over for breaking the law. What a c*ckhole of a policeman.

#155 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:58pm by PaulG10

You are all morons. Are you honestly trying to justify being angry at the cop for DOING HIS JOB and giving a guy a ticket for going 10 over? Really? If it was 5 I might understand, but really. I hope you all get hit by a bus. Preferably a bus going 10 MPH over the limit, because that's okay right?

#165 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:19pm by genius_man16

Australia uses kmh. 10 kph is 6 mph.

Which is pretty close to 5 over, don't you think?

but if you can consistently go 10 over, can't you consistently go 2 over? or the speed limit? or should you just keep accelerating as fast as you want? sorry, but that makes no sense

I think the reason they said that is the fact that the cop threw in that he was "only" going 10 over the speed limit. Indicating that pulling people going 10 over is not the norm for the cop.

#306 - On 09/18/2009 at 2:38pm by cs68507

Yeah really...think about the cop who would shoot the robber attempting to kill your family. He's such a horrible person. How dare he risk is life to safe yours. Or the fact that he might stop someone going 10 over that would then drive 2 miles before killing a kid that ran out in the road and he couldn't stop in time.

Ok, people are stupid. I hate when the argument against others who vocally express their hatred for cops is, 'what would a world without cops be like, blah blah blah'. Well it would suck but that's not what people want. Not everything is black and white, just because people hate cops, doesn't mean they don't want them to exist, they just want them to stop being petty, power abusing douche bags.

I hate cops as well, do I want a world without them? No.

What I want is for them to solve/prevent murders, catch buglers and rapists, stop harassing people that are not wearing seat belts and leave people that go 2 miles over the speed limit alone. Police are supposed to protect PUBLIC safety, if someone doesn't feel the need to wear a seat belt to go down the block, they shouldn't have to be punished like a child for using their own judgment. Are you hurting anyone else? No. People should be able to do whatever they want to themselves as long as they aren't hurting others in the process. It's all a scheme to make money, do you really think the cop gives two shits about your safely?

People hate cops because a great majority of them are power hungry/abusing assholes. I have tons of story's as to why and all my friends do too but here is the most recent one for your approval.

I got arrested and was kept in central booking for three days/nights just because I put out my cigarette TWO steps into a subway entrance which technically was still outside but according to the officer, it was on MTA property. I wasn't even in doors yet. There were no signs or anything to signify what I was doing was wrong. I was also extremely respectful and followed everything I was told to do and didn't argue while being apologetic, I explained that I just got a new job after I've been looking for two years and really couldn't afford to lose it. I still got cuffed and thrown in a cell for three days to wait to see a judge who laughed, didn't understand why I was even arrested and let me go.

Because of that, I got in trouble at work because I got arrested during a work day and thrown in jail for three days, I also got fired because since I wasn't convicted of anything, they didn't give me any papers stating why I was arrested and what the outcome was nor would they give it to me so my boss thought I was lying and didn't want him to know why I was in jail, my parents had a heart attack since I was missing for three days and had to use my one phone call to tell my boss I was in jail, and tons of other crap just because cops feel the need to abuse the power they have and mess up peoples lives because they used to get beat up in school and made fun of and now they can get back at everyone.

I hate cops with a passion, they have never helped me out in any way, all my experiences have been a nightmare with them and the best part is everyone has a similar story of how a police officer, who is supposed to serve and protect us, screwed us over in some way. Everyone does. Why do you think that is?

Since when can you get a ticket for that?

#109 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:47pm by pernicat

That can only happen in a country with really questionable laws like the USA, not in Australia for example.

#118 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:56pm by arienh4

Yeah, and then when he points out that there is no such law on the books, you should taze him and sprinkle some crack on him! Yeah! That'll show 'em!

#136 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:19pm by mooneydriver

#118 and #34. It depends on the actual speed limit you were breaking. 100 km? 10 is nothing. 15? He should not have been going at 25. I assume it's 15 because of twisted roads, schools, frequent deer/duck/animal crossings from the nearby landscape.

I still went YDI though.

What if the speed limit was 15 (school zone)? That's nearly double the limit. It doesn't specify what the speed limit was. If people don't want to follow the speed limit, they should expect tickets. That's like raping someone in public and getting upset you got arrested.

i stand by my statement. 25 in a 15 is not bad in even the slightest of way. Unless you're impaired, or driving a big rig, there is nothing you can prevent while going 15 that you cant prevent while doing 25

#17 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:11pm by Ilovelife07

You're not thinking this through very well. Your whole point is actually completely wrong, as it does take significantly longer to stop from 25 than from 15. However, the most important aspect of the speed limit is the damage done when an impact does occur, in which cause a 25mph crash will inevitably cause more damage than at 15. Of course, there is also the convenience factor in that it is far, far easier for children to cross the road, as they will have more time to do it.

I didn't say it takes the same amount of time, i said the differences in time make no difference. The only scenario where 15 would make a difference over 25 is if you are a terrible driver and not paying attention to whats coming ahead and have to slam on the brakes

#26 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:19pm by Ilovelife07

Oops on my failure to think of the other measurements. That makes a difference, but I still stick to what I was saying. The limit was made with everything taken into consideration. It's a "limit". I understand a few mph/kph (? I guess, I'm not good with the conversion), but I think ten being unworthy of a ticket is getting ridiculous. If we want to go for the whole "no limit" thing, then sure. Otherwise, people should obey it.

#27 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:20pm by Intoxicunt

not to mention the fact the 10km/h = about 6mph, which is nothing

#32 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:22pm by Ilovelife07

Highway - 10 mph over not as big a deal
Rural road / high density area - 10 mph is a big deal

Go 10 over in a school zone and see how well the cops treat you. When in zones posted lower than 35 mph (school zone, hospital, strip mall) the difference of 10 mph could be the difference between hurting someone or stopping in time.

"not to mention the fact the 10km/h = about 6mph, which is nothing"

take that to court. I guarantee the first question asked is, "how fast were you going? what is the posted speed limit?" Try to explain how going over the speed limit is ok to do when the state / country sets the speed limit. You make a very moot point about 6 mph since in a court of law you A) are not obeying the law and B) admitting to being 6 mph over a posted speed limit

#34 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:23pm by nomadxx7

You are a jackass ilovelife.

#38 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:27pm by Ilovelife07

they didnt say anything about cops choosing the speed limit.

#40 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:28pm by councilman97

I'm not saying everyone should get pulled over who speeds. All I'm saying is that we all know what the speed limit is and we should take responsibility of our actions. I speed, but I'm not a child about it if I get pulled over because I realize that there is the chance that I can get pulled over when I do that.

#42 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:29pm by jm88

I think you missed my point councilman. I think the hate towards cops is misplaced. Yeah they are the ones who pull you over, but if they didnt pull over anyone, the speed limits would be useless. They are just doing their jobs. why is this such a difficult concept to grasp.

#47 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:33pm by jm88

"That's like raping someone in public and getting upset you got arrested."

That is the dumbest logic I've heard all day. Over 85% of drivers speed... 85% of people do not rape each other. One is a brutal tragic crime that doesn't just break the law but violates the basic rights of another human being. The other isn't even a crime, its an "offense", a "moving violation". In the USA it is far less than a misdemeanor. What a horrible analogy. If you speed should you anticipate the possibility of a ticket? Sure, but clearly as a society we've come to the conclusion that its a risk worth taking because it is generally victimless, harmless, and frankly tough to be caught at. It takes an entirely different mind set and gross psychotic disconnect to commit rape. They are in no way similar. Since the OP meant km/h not mph pulling someone over for 10 over is a bit overzealous in the majority of situations. It is likely several cars drove by the cop doing more than 10 over while he was writing this guy a ticket. The poor judgment here is that the cop is not doing a very effective job at discouraging drivers who are putting people at far greater risk.

Sorry OP, you may have been doing your job and can't fault you there, but YDI for not picking your battles and prioritizing properly. You should at least have given this guy a warning if the road was slow and you couldn't find anyone going faster. Just letting them know someone is watching is often enough to correct mild speeders like this.

#68 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:58pm by examancer

It was a hyperbole to make a point. Obviously a moving violation and a felony aren't on the same level. My point was that people should either respect the law or expect to get their due punishment, no matter how severe or minimal the crime is. If we make allowances for small things, we would probably start to do it for more serious offenses. In my opinion, there are too many loopholes anyway.
I disagree with you on one thing: It is not always a victimless crime. I'm sure these speed limits are figured based on sound logic and math to figure out what it a safe speed to go at in the area without risking unnecessary accidents. If someone speeding hits and kills someone because they couldn't stop in time, there is a victim. It may not be an every day occurrence, but there are times when it could be prevented by obeying the limit. Besides, what is so great about speeding anyway? Unless you're going on a cross-country trip, it probably won't shave any significant time off your drive.
Like I say, if people don't think the laws are fair, make an effort to change them or deal with it. Hey, I don't think a lot of laws are the way they should be, but, if I break them, I expect to be punished.

#78 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:08pm by Intoxicunt

yes, but the laws of physics say that the additional damage of a car going 70 vs. 60 (a 10 mph/kph increase) is much more than the additional damage of a car going 25 vs. 15 (a 10 mph/kph increase). Kinetic energy equals one half times mass times the square of the velocity. Due to the velocity being squared, the additional energy needing to be dissipated by going that extra mph/kph increases exponentially as the speed increases (assuming the mass stays the same).

Stopping distance can also be substituted for damage in a crash as both are a direct result of the amount of kinetic energy of the vehicle.

#116 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:55pm by easrc

ok intoxicunt first use common sense. The next time you drive try and grow some balls and go over the speed limit just a little. You may come to find out that everyone is goin the same or faster than you. Driving slow causes accidents too! Yea of course laws are laws but gosh, some cops are a**holes. This one deserved it he wasnt wearing his vest which could had killed him

#124 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:04pm by citycrazed25

easrc if you crash into something going 70 there is a good chance you will be seriously hurt or die. If you are going 60 you're either going to be seriously hurt or die. Either way somebody getting hurt or dying. It all comes down to if you are a good driver or not.

#131 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:10pm by citycrazed25

"I'm sure these speed limits are figured based on sound logic and math to figure out what it a safe speed to go at in the area without risking unnecessary accidents."

If that were true, why does my state set a maximum of 55 for all roads that aren't a federal highway?

There is a lot of engineering that goes into sign placement, whether to use a stop sign or a light, etc. Not so much with the speed limits...

#148 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:45pm by mooneydriver

speed limits are there for a reason -- i actually learned how to calculate a speed limit in physics going around a curve, and 10 mph is the only amount you can (usually) go around a curve safely without any weather problems or whatever. the same holds true for roads. yes, you can go 10 mph over safely, but it is intentionally lowered on the signs so that people don't try to go 10 miles over the posted speed limit.

FYL for doing your job and getting slammed for it.

#153 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:52pm by LeCielNousAide

I love how people jump on the cops dicks for everything. Argument ad verecundiam, much? Cops are nothing but parents put in place because society emphasizes all the wrong problems. I guess people, like councilman, like having parents for the rest of your lives. I suppose you like being a baby that doesn't think for themselves as well.

Authority=abuse. Always.

"Oh but they're just doing their jobs"

Yep, that is definitely a good reason for why they avoid doing what's right. SHEEEEEEEEEEEP.

#156 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:59pm by snavula

I would be all for reasonable speed limits. It is not reasonable when a winding dirt road has the same speed limit as a dead-straight 18 mile stretch of asphalt. It is not reasonable when the speed limit is the same day and night. It is not reasonable when speed limits do not change based on conditions. It is not reasonable to set the same speed limit for a dump truck as for a Lotus, given the drastically different 60 - 0 braking distances.

#169 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:29pm by mooneydriver

mooneydriver, 55 is the speed at which you get the highest MPG performance.

#179 - On 09/17/2009 at 6:15pm by MindstormsKid

Person with atrocious grammar and spelling: "ok intoxicunt first use common sense. The next time you drive try and grow some balls and go over the speed limit just a little. You may come to find out that everyone is goin the same or faster than you. Driving slow causes accidents too! Yea of course laws are laws but gosh, some cops are a**holes. This one deserved it he wasnt wearing his vest which could had killed him"

No shit, Captain Obvious, driving "slow" (by which I assume you mean significantly slower than the rest of traffic) is a hazard. I never said it wasn't. I didn't advise anyone to drive 50 on the interstate (US, as it is my only point of reference). I'm just saying that if you drive over the speed limit, you should expect to get caught.
It isn't about "balls". The point of driving a vehicle is not to show how tough you are, you hyper-hormonal ball of shit. We're talking about what is safe, reasonable, and acceptable. When you can keep up with the conversation, come back.

Mooneydriver: Way to miss the point entirely. I did indeed say that I believe the speed limits to be calculated based on at least some logic, as opposed to "Hey, Randy, pick a number 15-70." That isn't an indication that I think all speed limits everywhere in any country, even those I haven't been to (e.g. Australia, the OP's location) are perfectly reasonable. My point was that if someone wants the speed limit changed, they can petition, write, run for office, whatever the hell they feel would be effective to try to change it. If that fails, they have two options: Deal with it and drive the, oooooooh, ten miles per hour slower, or drive as fast as they want and be one of these "Fuck the police, I'm gonna do what I want!" types, risking the consequence.
Why on earth would I pity someone for getting the consequence they knew they were risking when they took the action? Boohoo, life has consequences. Fuck my life! It's over, ruined! Seriously.

so Ilovelife,
is it okay that while i was walking acrossed a street this morning, I almost got hit by a driver going roughly 10-20 miles over the speed limit?
yeah, didn't think so.

#190 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:01pm by hothotheat_

That is not at all true. Most if not all production cars get BETTER fuel economy at 55 than at a higher cruising speed because of parasite drag. Most production cars get their PEAK fuel economy below 55 for the same reason. Different cars get their peak fuel economy at different speeds (usually between 40-60mph).

The 55mph national speed limit was set as a compromise number during the gas crisis during the 1970s. Heavy, carbureted cars were the norm.

#213 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:18pm by mooneydriver

Intoxicunt, your obey-all-laws-or-you're-an-anarchist argument is a false dichotomy. Real people are a lot more complicated than that. Real people can be generally law abiding and still refuse to obey a law they disagree with here and there. Do you really think that the average person who gets a speeding ticket is the "Fuck the police, I'm gonna do what I want!" type?

#218 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:30pm by mooneydriver

"Real people"? As opposed to fake ones?
Ok, copy and paste where I said "obey all laws or you're an anarchist". Hmm, you mean I DIDN'T? Ok then. What I was saying was that only a small percentage of speeders are on some crusade to change the world like Susan B. Anthony, or are fleeing for their very lives. People who just disobey laws because they don't like authority are, essentially anarchists.

#224 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:52pm by Intoxicunt

"Real people" as opposed to the two rigid types in your false dichotomy.

Don't claim that I said something and put quotes around it unless it's a direct quote. That is dishonest.

"Ok, copy and paste where I said 'obey all laws or you're an anarchist'" While those were not my exact words, I said you were making that argument because you were, here: "...If that fails, they have two options: Deal with it and drive the, oooooooh, ten miles per hour slower, or drive as fast as they want and be one of these 'Fuck the police, I'm gonna do what I want!' types, risking the consequence."

And again just now: "People who just disobey laws because they don't like authority are, essentially anarchists."

I AM saying that you present an oversimplified version of human behavior. There is a whole spectrum of options available to us, not just your "two options"

#230 - On 09/17/2009 at 9:13pm by mooneydriver

Ok intoxicunt, criticize my grammar i don't really care. I bet you're not even close to perfect. I bet you don't follow every single law. We are all humans and we make mistakes. Sometimes going over the speed limits are mistakes, because we are used to just pressing on the gas. "Growing balls" refers to taking risks and people who don't want their lives to be predictable take risks. Being tough has nothing to do with anything, where the hell did you get that from. I could give a shit how fast you drive. It's all about people's nature. If their nature is to drive fast then they are going to drive fast. It's not about being tough and breaking laws.

#290 - On 09/18/2009 at 10:43am by citycrazed25

Ok, I am going to reply to this.
If people just want to go "fast", then why don't they do 85 mph EVERYWHERE? The fact that someone always goes ten over tells me they are just pressing their luck to challenge authority. I mean, if you can go 70 when speeding on a 55 road, why can't you go 70 on the interstate? It's no longer fast enough, because it's not over the speed limit.
I agree with taking risks, but not on the road. Hey, I might think it's a fun risk to take by driving drunk! That doesn't make it ok. If I want a thrill, I'll go bungee jumping. That way, only I'm at risk and I'm not causing any problem for someone else.
The reason I say that you sound like you're trying to be a tough man is because you're telling me to grow some balls, as though driving is some sort of press-your-luck game of chance to get your adrenaline pumping. That is a very "look at me, I'm such a bad ass" mentality. It's just a way to get from point A to point B. I don't know why it has to be "ballsy". Should I try to inject risk into my shower routine as well?

#304 - On 09/18/2009 at 1:32pm by citycrazed25

People don't go 85 everywhere because they have COMMON SENSE, you authority hugging sheep.

Just because someone goes 10 over everywhere doesn't make them a bad driver. A cop should be pulling over someone who is driving DANGEROUSLY.

If someone can get through traffic at 10 MPH over safely (not cutting people off, tailgating etc.) let them. They are NOT a danger to anyone. Cops should spot danger not look for shit to do.

They shouldn't have to pull people over 'because its their job'. Their job should be detecting and quashing DANGER.

But please, argue some more from authority. Argumentum ad Verecundias is my favorite!

#333 - On 09/21/2009 at 11:11am by snavula

your an idiot. u can generalize all cars and trucks like that. it all depends on your rpm (revolutions per minute for you retards) and your gear ratio. if you have a lower final drive ratio, then your rpm will be lower and you can get your optimum gas mileage at 75 and 80 mph. it all depends on the vehicle. a carb'd vehicle will get best mileage at 1000 to 1500 rpm. a fuel injected vehicle will get better the lower the rpm to a point (below 700 is too low) speed has nothing to do with it

How the hell is this karma? OSHA guy was 10 over the limit, he was doing his job to pull him over. May not have been doing it 100% properly, but it seems like a minor infraction. I did laugh though...

#8 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:05pm by jm88

It's Karma beacuse.... OSHA guy then did HIS job and gave the cop a ticket, for a LOT more $$$

#121 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:01pm by kukopia

Its KARMA because cop was being an a**hole and gave OSHA guy a ticket so OSHA guy decides to be an a**hole and give cop a ticket. He was doing his job also.

#23 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:17pm by UIUC2013

why is it ok for the cop to "just be doing his job" and pull the guy over for a minor infraction but it suck for the cop to get his own fine in return for violating whatever law dictates he wear the HVV? Both we're in violation, both got tagged, both deserved it. Move on.

#57 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:44pm by bugmenotmofo

Since we're talking Australia here, I would assume that we're actually talking 10 km/h over the speed limit, which is about 6.25 mph. So, maybe the OP was being a little picky about the speed, but in my opinion, if someone is going to speed - even if they think the speed limit is ridiculously slow and they're just going a little bit over - they need to be prepared to face the consequences. Everyone who's saying they hate cops for pulling people over who are just barely violating the law ought to realize that the law is the law, and if you don't like it, try to make a change!

#24 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:17pm by alexdz

You need a high visibility vest? What's the purpose of that, to make people think, "there's a cop in the area, so I should stop breaking the law"? Well for shit's sake, you shouldn't need to be able to see a cop to know to follow the law!

Cops hide in bushes and shit here.

#28 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:20pm by thinginthetub

#77 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:07pm by kukri187

Yeah but how about when the cop has to walk out into the road to direct traffic around an accident?? Every person is staring at his car lights and wouldn't see him standing out there. Cops are very rarely right around their car if it's an accident so the blue lights really only tell you to slow down, the vest tells you where he is located.

#104 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:42pm by batosai33

There are motor vehicle accidents every day. They cost many lives, and cause a lot of property damage. Pulling people over for not following traffic laws is an attempt to prevent accidents. So to say that police officers should be out "catching criminals" and not attempting to keep roads safe is just misguided and ignorant. Besides, you know how many criminals are caught from routine traffic stops?

These stupid freaking speed limits need to go away, as do OHaS officers. As do Police.

I don't believe that Police even help much. Here in the US when you NEED a cop they are hours away eating donuts. When you DON'T need them, they're there to give you a $400 ticket for something the guy in front of you did (Yes that did happen to me, yes I went to court, yes I was able to prove it with video footage, yes I got the cop suspended because he violated protocol and actually did some stuff that is completely unprofessional).

I have NO love for most cops.

#53 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:36pm by sergeimosin

everyone hates the cops til they actually need one.

#55 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:40pm by jm88

I hit YDI and I'm no cop hater. In fact when I was lil I used to love cops just cuz they're cops, my family is in law enforcement, but as I said I was lil (and a bit naive). I've seen one too many instances in which cops showed their true colors, which caused me to absolutely hate cops for most of my teen years, but nowadays I'm more chilled about it. But I could totally understand those who hate cops. So all you who criticize the cop-haters, you must either be a cop or just someone who happens not to have been ever in contact with one.

#127 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:07pm by nypd613

speed limits shouldn't even exist. common sense should be used.

#61 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:46pm by jacobwhatwhat

speed limits are enforced because people are seriously lacking in common sense of what would be the proper speed and are clearly unable to judge for themselves the most responsible and safe speed. Among numerous other hazards on the road.

#132 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:13pm by premiermois

where I am no one normally tickets you less you're going more than 10k over and less it's more than 15 it's still unlikely. course round here ten k over is a pretty standard speed that if you aren't going everyone round you is ticked.

#62 - On 09/17/2009 at 2:46pm by kaelendra

honestly YDI, people are right that 10km/h is relatively nothing at all (when compared to some of the jackasses out that there will do 50mph through a 25nph zone (I see it daily). However, those that are saying that the law is the law are also right. If you are speeding and you get pulled over, you deserve the ticket. People speed on the hopes of not getting caught or because they feel that it isn't necessary to go as slow as the posted limit.

BUT the same argument holds true for the cop. The cop is required to wear the HVV. This is so for a reason. The cop chose not to wear it and had the bad misfortune of pulling over a person with the authority to fine him for it.

You can not say the cop was justified for fining the driver and turn around say the drive was not justified for fining the cop. Likewise you can not admonish the cop for the fine and not the driver (Saftey Officer). They both did their jobs and were BOTH within the letter of the law just as they were both breaking the law.

Oh, and #3 if the cop had given another ticket for disrespecting a police officer he could have been desked or suspended for it. The Health and Saftey Officer has the right to fine anyone for violations. A cop ticking one for issuing a fine to him/her is guilty of abuse of power. A Badge does not put you above other laws or out of reach of other enforcers. Imagine a cop trying to ticket a judge for issuing a fine for contempt. How fast would that cop be off the force?

#181 - On 09/17/2009 at 6:31pm by GriefBacon

Yeah, most people go over the speed limit by 10, but did you realise that a lot of these people end up killing or seriously injuring someone?
On the weekend, just outside where I work, a young man lost his life after getting hit by a car going not much more than 10 kms over the speed limit. His wife is due to have his baby in less than 3 weeks, and if the man driving the car had been going the speed limit, he would have been able to stop in time.

Now tell me, is it really ok to speed? It doesn't matter if it's a little bit... It can still make the difference between life and death...

With a mentality like yours, you shouldn't be allowed to drive, because it's stupid people like you that cause accidents.

I was 'bout to hit "I agree" cuz this place is full of cop-haters, but it does piss me off when someone gets pulled over for going only 10 over. At least here in NY 10 mph over the limit is considered a "grace period" for drivers and any cop that does fine you for that (which rarely happens) is considered a real bastard. So YDI for karma comin' back to bite you right in your face (or for that matter, your wallet).

and actually it was 10 km/h so only like 6 mph
can you imagine being such a tightass?

#114 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:52pm by tko

It depends where in NY you go over the limit.
I generally go 9 mph over the limit, just so the cop will feel like a real asshole because I wasn't even going 10 mph over!
If you're on Long Island, you drive faster than the ambulances. Going 15-20 over is pretty common.

#149 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:48pm by gonzolove

Whether or not 10 over the speed limit is 'acceptable' or not is completely not the issue. If you're going the speed limit or under, it's legal. If you go over the speed limit, it's illegal. That's how it is, by definition. People arguing that 10 over the limit is OK are essentially saying that it's just slightly less illegal than going 20 over the limit. Either way, slightly illegal or very illegal, it's all illegal. It's not hard to stay the speed limit. If you're in a rush while driving, you should've left earlier.

#75 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:02pm by futurejp

Actually, if you say it's not hard to stay within the speed limit, you must live somewhere that the limits are waaay higher than America. Here the entire speed limit system is one big money-making industry. How else can you explain it that the street on which I live, which extends into NJ a couple of miles down the road has a 30 mph limit, (which is really a ridiculous speed for anyone keeping to the limit), but then switches to 40 mph as soon as you cross over to NJ? Was the road any different or more dangerous in NY? No, it's just that many drivers coming from NJ are still driving 45-50 mph from NJ, and continue, so NY makes money off of these drivers. Which is a lot, believe me.

#82 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:12pm by nypd613

true though that may be, most of us don't have the power or the resources to either a) make significant changes to the law or b) move to a country that has laws we like better.

sometimes 20 over the limit is reasonable. open country roads during full daylight, for example. huge highways with low traffic volume that have, for some reason, a 45 mph limit. and yes, sometimes the limits are what they are because of something we don't know, but frankly, sometimes they're not.

i agree that rules should exist, but the purpose behind the rule is more important than the rule itself. if you can drive on a road at a speed without endangering yourself, the road, or others, there's really no reason you shouldn't be allowed to do that speed.

#83 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:15pm by jmeg

Actually, I live in NJ and MA. Never intentionally go past the speed limit, never have gotten pulled over for anything, always get places on time. I'm sure speed limits are determined by a variety of factors. Average weather conditions, road conditions, residential facts, proximity to areas with lots of children, etc. So just because sometimes a road seems like you can safely go beyond its speed limit, doesn't mean that it's usually a good idea to. But I mean...what do you want? Do you want them to increase the speed limit by 15/20 mph everywhere? I guarantee more accidents would happen.

#159 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:04pm by futurejp

You really believe that THAT much thought goes into speed limits? You don't have much experience with government, do you...

#76 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:02pm by Bucky_Fellini

Lol, well you know they gotta meet that quota eh? but seriously almost $100 ticket for 10km over? that's just stupid. And for those of you that say "Oh well he might have been in a school zone"...just how many school zones do you think there are??? the world's not built up from school zones, the chances that he was in a school zone speeding is slim to none.

Then you've got people saying "they're not pigs when you get robbed and have to call them"......Well that'd be them doing the job right for a change. Just because they're needed and helpful sometimes, doesn't mean that they do the job right everywhere.

#85 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:19pm by FantomOfDarkness

this made me laugh. YDI for not wearing a vest.

BUT - to the morons who think it's okay to break the law even a little bit - wait until you get in an accident going "only 10" over the speed limit. Guess whose fault it's going to be? It's a written law, right there in front of you or in court. You're not a special snowflake. You're not above the law under any circumstances and the cop has full right to pull you over if he wants to, damnit. So STFU to the idiots who think it's cool to trash the police.

#88 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:23pm by premiermois

Everyone who is saying “YDI” and “karma’s a bitch” you might as well be saying that cops should not do their job. I drive fast and speed sometimes so I understand how 10 over is a little extreme to pull someone over for, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that it is still illegal. He pulled over someone who was breaking the law which is what he should have done. Just like the cop did his job the OSHA guy did his. Not wearing your vest seems like a pretty small infraction but according to OSHA it is illegal so the cop was given a ticket. This is not karma it is the law.

#89 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:26pm by ASUguy13

People on here are so Amerocentric. Most countries use the METRIC system which means the guy, being in Australia, was going 10KM over the speed limit, not 10 MILES. Very significant difference. No sensible police officer will pull you over for 10km over unless you are in a school or construction zone. That is why YDI. 10 miles is reasonable but a bit nit-picky.

The Amerocentric comment goes ditto for all those commenters on other FMLs who think that the rest of the world has a 21 year old drinking age. What a backwards country.

Oh dear God, damn those people - those thousands of people on FML from America - who don't always first remember to do the conversion! Oh woe is them, damn them all to hell! Yes, well said, my friend. Well said indeed.

#95 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:33pm by premiermois

Actually there are fair odds that he meant 10MPH. While the signs may read in kph, and fuel may be sold by the litre, many people in the UK and the Commonwealth still use MPH and MPG in conversation. Remember that it's called the ENGLISH system of measurement. Oh, and watch some top gear...

#105 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:43pm by mooneydriver

Even so, the point still stands because it's OVER the speed limit =/

#108 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:46pm by jm88

#91, please STFU.
Obviously many Americans know that the rest of the world doesn't have a 21 year old drinking age because we're pissed that we have one of the highest drinking ages in the world.
I mean, you can walk into a bar at 16 in France and get a drink.
For fucks sake, do yourself a favor and shut up.

school zones are 25 mph. I've never seen anything sub 25. In NOVA you'd be more likely to get pulled over for doing the speed limit than 10 over. 10 over is the norm. You're not speeding until its 15 or more over. F*ck the police. Pulling someone over for 10 over is just being a dick.

#94 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:33pm by yeAyeAno

Cops pull you over when you speed. it's their damn job and that's what they're supposed to do. It's YOUR fault for speeding, especially ten over (and they usually pull people over for going over that much.)

How ever he does deserve it for not following the rules. As a cop, he definitely should be adhering to the laws he's supposed to uphold.

#96 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:34pm by Bullshet

$84 for 10 over? Jeeeeez. Ridiculous! >:(

Buuuuuut, YDI for half-assing your job. You probably want the power of being a police officer, but don't want to follow the rules for your own fucking safety. Unless you just forgot today, in which case it's understandable to make a mistake every now and then. Granted, as an officer... someone who enforces safety and laws... you should be setting a good example every day you're on duty. But like I said, we all make mistakes.

Please, OP... for your own good (and not just for your wallet's sake), remember to wear the vest next time!

10 over, eh? How many impeding traffic tickets have you written?

#98 - On 09/17/2009 at 3:37pm by mooneydriver

My guess is zero.
Because cops NEVER write impeding traffic tickets.
Even though driving slowly is more dangerous because it gets all of the cars closer together, making an accident more likely to occur.

Seriously? Tell me, what do you do for work? What's is your oh so amazing career choice? Pulling someone over for not obeying the speed limit in the law enforcement occupation it's called working. Yea there a lot of controversies over whether they are at or above the law but the point is they are the law. Would you want someone to pull you over for doing 10 over, or end up getting cut off by someone who wasn't do the speed limit and you plow into their back end causing a multiple car pile up and losing your life? You speeding or doing anything that is "against" the law , for the most part, is there to protect you. and The reason you call them "pigs" or whatever rude things you call them is because obviously there is something wrong with you. To serve and protect buddy, they'll remember what you say when you need help or protection. I'd just put in reverse and run over you again =)

It sucks that you got a ticket for not wearing a vest and it sucks for the OSHA guy who got a ticket as well. You guys are even, you learned for next time...

#133 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:13pm by XRiseToFallAgain

I can't believe you posted it and expected support. This has to be fake.

The thing I hate most about cops is that they constantly break the laws that they enforce. I suppose that happens any time you give someone power, but it still really bugs me.

You shouldn't ticket someone for going 10 over. It's not dangerous and not excessive.

It really made my day seeing that a cop got a ticket for giving the wrong person a ticket. It reminds me that as much as I hate the 5-0, there's always someone that can stick it to them :)

#137 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:19pm by roobear

#139 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:25pm by danno3400

Last week I was driving on a cross-country trip trying my best to be a cautious and curteous driver. I made a conscious effort to follow every law of which I was aware. I saw an officer on the side of the road, took off cruise control, and dropped my speed an additional 5mph. I was very careful not to break any laws as I passed the officer. He pulled me over for breaking some obscure law for which there is no equivalent in my own state. I was polite, respectful, and assured him that - now that I was aware of the law - I would be sure to follow it while in his state.

You know what? He didn't even hesitate to give me a ticket. You know what else? It comes with a mandatory court appearance for which I have to drive 10 hours.

I don't very much like cops at the moment. So if you're going to hand out tickets on technicalities, you'd better be ready to receive them in return. I'd have done the same to that police officer if I'd had the power to do so, and your misfortune brings me a small amount of happiness.

#142 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:34pm by newsushi

#143 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:34pm by pipsqueak7

Dude, 10 over is like nothing.
I speed all the damn time, but then again I do live out in the middle of bloody nowhere.
Also, Intoxicunt, really? We should respect the law or feel it's wrath?
I didn't expect that from you.
=/

#144 - On 09/17/2009 at 4:37pm by gonzolove

Why not? I'm not one of these "Ohhh fuck the pigs, fuck government , anarchy wooo!" types...
I don't like all the laws either. Boohoo. I hardly think getting myself a ticket or landed in jail is helping my case. What does that prove? That I can break the law? Oh. Wow. I really won in that deal.

I never said we should be mindless slaves. At the same time, I have little to no respect for those who retaliate against laws they disagree with by just breaking them anyway. That's childish. What if I decide I think killing should be ok? (In actuality, I do, in a roundabout way). Should I just go do it, regardless of the laws, then complain on FML when I get sentenced to death? Somehow, I don't see that helping the situation.

#192 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:04pm by Intoxicunt

"I have little to no respect for those who retaliate against laws they disagree with by just breaking them anyway."

You have no respect for people who commit civil disobedience? I'm not saying that speeding is necessarily civil disobedience. I agree that it is foolish to be SURPRISED at the consequences of breaking a law that you know about and disagree with. I do not agree that there are not valid reasons to break the law. I also do not agree that people forfeit the right to bitch about a law by breaking it. There are plenty of scenarios where you are safer speeding than driving at exactly the speed limit. Try going the speed limit on the QEW, even in the right lane, and you'll see what I mean.

#207 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:02pm by mooneydriver

I'm not one of those types either.
But I didn't think you considered civil disobedience to be childish (which is how women got their rights btw), and that you didn't realize that petitioning the government to change a law actually gets you no where.
Yea we can work to change laws, but it's gotta be drastic.
Also, the reason we have roads that have higher speed limits that 55 mph is due to people breaking the law by speeding. The US at one point set a maximum speed at 55 because of fuel economy.
They got rid of it because people disregarded it. They sped, and the government changed the laws.

#209 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:03pm by gonzolove

I agree there are exceptions. That applies to any law, rule, etc. However, in regular circumstances, I don't think it's cool to just disregard the law/traffic rules. I take it this guy had no good excuse, otherwise the FML would read, "He was fleeing for his life, so I reduced his fine..." or something of that nature.
What I don't respect are people who are, for lack of a better term, extremist vigilantes. THEY decide what laws are appropriate, and follow those alone, because they can't handle authority. I mean, if someone really just can't handle being expected to follow some guidelines, as I said earlier, they should move to an island and start an anarchist society. I'm not that much of a conformist, but I have gotten to the point in life where I don't see "rebelling" as useful at all.
In this specific case, I hardly think the guy should bitch about getting the obvious consequence to be expected for his actions. Sure, he CAN bitch about it, but it's ridiculous.
As for people who commit civil disobedience, that is very broad and vague. I don't respect that in general, but there are so very many cases that it is excusable that I can't really say.

My basic point is that it wouldn't kill someone to slow down 6.2 (I think that was it) mph. Are they really going to arrive at their destination that much sooner if they speed a little? It screams to me, "I hate authority and am a brat, so I'm going to this just because I can!" Then, "Waaah, I got a ticket."
Plus, we still don't know that he wasn't in a zone where the speed limit is 30 or something. By context, I'm assuming he was one of the fastest cars out there. So why can't he drive the speed of the other cars? It doesn't sound to be a case of having to speed to avoid causing wrecks.

#212 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:16pm by Intoxicunt

So they should continue raising it? People go 90 now, so let's raise it to that. Then, people will go as fast as their car can move, so let's just get rid of speed limits.
I mean, hey, the Autobahn works pretty well. If that's what you're for, then ok. I just disagree with that.

I don't necessarily believe that women would never have gotten their rights any other way. African slaves didn't get equal rights by forcing it. Sure, they rebelled and ran away, but they were hunted down when they did. What really turned the tide was, you guessed it, government. I've seen petitions do a decent job, actually.

I don't think cops are assholes for upholding the law. They don't get to pick and choose what parts they like, then uphold those. I do think the majority of speeders are assholes, though. I don't think it's a protest against the speed limit to be compared to women's rights. I think it's (usually) people who are in a hurry, got a chip on their shoulder, want to show off, or something of that nature. THAT is what I don't respect.

Edit: I believe I have effectively written a novel. :/

#215 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:22pm by Intoxicunt

You should do a little research on the autobahns. Most are not unlimited speed, anything goes. The speed limits make sense, because they are adjusted based on traffic volume, weather, etc. The police primarily identify and punish the truly dangerous behaviors (impeding traffic) instead of just the easiest ones to collect fines for.

As far as your version of how African slaves got their rights in this country, that's a bit of an oversimplification. In the interest of not writing an essay I'll leave it at that.

This FML isn't about a guy bitching about getting a speeding ticket. It's a guy who is strict about enforcing the law bitching because another enforcer did the same to him.

"My basic point is that it wouldn't kill someone to slow down 6.2 (I think that was it) mph"

This line of reasoning has led to a lot of human suffering. It's pretty similar to: "would it kill someone to obey the school dress code?" and "would it kill someone to use the colored bathroom?" Irrational laws piss people off, even when they are mere inconveniences.

#226 - On 09/17/2009 at 8:55pm by mooneydriver

Point being: You're not changing my OPINIONS, nor am I changing yours. I'm every bit as entitled to mine. And you people really get on my nerves. So anything left to be said can be said in a PM. I'm through with this thread.

#228 - On 09/17/2009 at 9:02pm by Intoxicunt

I'm not a big fan of many laws in my country, but speed limits (At least where I'm from) are based on the chances people have of surviving should they get hit at certain speeds, and the time it takes a car to fully stop. As well as the structural integrity of cars hit at certain speeds, speeding is reckless and down right retarded wherever, for whatever reason (Unless you're in the emergency services).

I agree. On all three points.

#158 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:02pm by GotWhateverItIs

"(A majority of) Americans have no respect for authority. It's really disgusting."

Maybe it's because we realize that law enforcement holds the law itself in contempt. It's hard to respect people who taze teenage Wendy's employees over a disagreement about the amount of change due. It's downright galling when the cop gets suspended with pay when it's found that the Wendy's employee gave the correct change. If you think that was an isolated incident... Google.

It's hard to respect people who claim to "visually estimate" your speed, especially when their word passes for proof of your guilt beyond reasonable doubt in most courts of law. It's hard to respect people who write tickets for speeding, but speed themselves because they know that they won't be getting a ticket. How can you respect a group of people who do not hesitate to punish you for disobeying laws that they themselves do not obey.

#160 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:07pm by mooneydriver

mooneydriver, Damn right!
Just the other day I saw a cop car speeding and tail-gating someone....

#162 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:12pm by gonzolove

I really doubt people are thinking of all that. They're just thinking "Here's the jerk who pulls me over and makes me pull money out of my pocket". There are so many things wrong with that type of thinking - people never think that it's their fault.
Then again, there are the bad cops - unfortunately it's a job that accepts more uneducated people who can often be ignorant - but they are definitely not the majority.
I repeat myself: There is no doubt that the average American mindset does not respect authority. Just go back to how the nation was founded, and every step after that up to today. Americans have never shown respect to authority; sometimes it's been a good thing, sometimes it's been a bad thing. But when people diss cops just because they're doing their jobs, it's definitely a bad thing.

#164 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:18pm by chanman

"It's hard to respect people who claim to "visually estimate" your speed, especially when their word passes for proof of your guilt beyond reasonable doubt in most courts of law. "

#243 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:29pm by DrunkenValor

Assumptions? We're talking about things that have actually happened.
The internet and cheap video cameras have exposed the huge amount of police brutality that occurs all of the time, everywhere.

#248 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:42pm by gonzolove

Yeah? And compared to the amount of good police do? - I'm sorry if you were a victim of crooked cops, but I doubt the vast majority are dodgy (Unless you live in Springfield.) And the headline 'Police brutality, three left dead' tends to make the headlines as oppose to 'Policeman prevents the mugging of grandad'.

Just because there's a few bad seeds doesn't mean you can condemn the entire force. There's assholes on power trips in every profession.

#249 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:47pm by DrunkenValor

I've done it. A friend has done it. Legally they need to show you the radar gun if you ask. If they can't or won't provide it, then in court it's basically he said/she said and the ticket can get thrown out.

Also, this type of attitude pervades America's youth, making it almost impossible to discipline them. The ones doing drugs, talking back to teachers, etc. just doing "bad kid" type of things are the ones who DO NOT RESPECT THE AUTHORITIES. They show contempt for teachers, principals (and principles), as well as anybody who might want to guide or help them.
This stems from those around them; they've seen others, often their parents, defy authority, and feel it is okay to do the same.
And people wonder why every generation gets worse.

#168 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:24pm by chanman

"And people wonder why every generation gets worse."

It doesn't. There are texts from the 11th century where old farts were saying the same thing.

Every generation just gets old and cranky and more likely to spout "back in my day" bullshit as they age.

#170 - On 09/17/2009 at 5:31pm by mooneydriver

Yup, we should all just blindly follow every law and never question authority.
Then one day we might wake up to find ourselves living in a completely different country than the one we know today. You know, the one with all sorts of personal freedoms that other people had to fight for and which we all enjoy.
Imagine all of those being taken away.
I'm far more concerned about corrupt politicians taking our freedoms away than the damn terrorists.
Not to mention, this is the USA, we became this independent country because the founders did not respect authority.

Yes, you have indeed posted a reply to the FML that you intended.

#191 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:03pm by discosoup

The law is there to be kept. Those people who are going 10 kph over the speed limit "because it's a victimless crime" need to stfu and learn some physics. Brakes slow you down roughly linearly. If something completely unexpected happens, like a silly child forgetting to check both sides before crossing the road, you're basically for each second until you hit 10 kph moving at 10 kph above what a person would usually do. 10kph = 2.7 meters per second. So what you're basically saying is that 2.7 meters per second does not matter. Trust me, it does. Speed kills. It's the difference between stopping 2 meters from little Gawain who accidentally shot his ball into the street and ran to fetch and stopping roughly halfway through him.

#180 - On 09/17/2009 at 6:17pm by Exerci

Nobody is saying that speeding is completely without risk. Driving is not completely without risk either. You think that the limits are reasonable and put in place with the best of intentions. A huge chunk of society disagrees. Many people look at the arbitrary nature of the speed limits, combined with the huge amounts of revenue earned by state and local governments from speeding tickets, and they call bullshit.

There are lots of other risky driving behaviors: Impeding traffic, failure to yield the right of way, distracted driving. Why is it that there are more tickets issued for speeding than for all of those combined?

cops don't have quotas for speeding tickets, they have quotas for "making contact with members of the community", just wanted to clear up that misconception. But really, 10 miles over is nothing. Some speed limits are ridiculous, the limit on the highway by my house is 40mph for a good stretch where it should be 55. Cops giving tickets for going no more than 15 over is just that cop deciding to be a douche, period...

#186 - On 09/17/2009 at 6:39pm by FlaminYawn

I've known some fantastic cops, including the officer who used to work my brother's case after he tried to run away and took off-the-clock time to visit him and my brother's later ride-along partner who was very understanding when I explained to him why I was driving partially in another lane (downhill, foggy, cliff on my side of the road and four children in the car).

However, having had 11 run-ins with police, two of which were my fault, I can say with authority that most cops suck. I've been pulled over and given a ticket for having a license plate light out, something most people don't even know is a law, let alone ever have opportunity to notice, blowing a stop sign that did not exist and have had cops tailgate me within inches to get me to speed.

YDI, dude.

PS- Why are the YDI posts getting hidden from negative votes?

#188 - On 09/17/2009 at 6:54pm by discosoup

To your P.S., it baffles me too, since the YDI's outnumber the Your Life is Fucked's.

I think of it like this: Sure, a huge number of cops let their power go to their head and become jerks. You could say that about politicians. That doesn't mean it's a brilliant idea to disregard any sort of law/government/regulations/etc. because the people who make them are inherently usually corrupt. If that's the sort of society people want, they should move to an island and start an anarchist country.

You can't just say 'most cops suck' with any authority, unless of course, you've met the majority of cops.
People suck, cops are people, therefore they suck no less then normal people suck.

#241 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:14pm by DrunkenValor

it's so funny when people try to call Americans stupid. Can you imagine life without cars? or airplanes? or phones? or cell phones? or TV? or radio? or light bulbs? or even the Internet??? All American inventions. Odds are 95% of technologies people across the world use everyday are American inventions, so actually, you can strongly argue that America is the most ingenious country on the planet.

#196 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:19pm by FlaminYawn

The car was invented multiple times in multiple countries over a long period of time. There was no sudden moment of invention, like with other things; once the steam engine and the train were invented, it wasn't that big a leap to take them off the rails; the French, the Russians, the Germans, all sorts of inventors were putting them together. The Americans are noticably absent in the very early days of the car's invention.

#201 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:40pm by musu

Car: Ford didn't invent it. Only mass produced it.
Light bulb: Two Canadians invented it (yeah, it's true). Sold the patent to Thomas Edison (also true). Edison can be the 'father of MODERN light bulbs' I guess.
TV: too many inventors contributing to say who gets credit.
Internet: Same as tv.

Taking credit for TV and the Internet (cars might even fit in there) is like saying someone invented Water. (Yes...it's that stupid). There were inventors for those items, but so many that you can't specifically say who. (Although the internet has two Americans that could be given most....but they declined saying the same things)

Most things are not American. Suck it up Sally's. Being 'manufactured in America' does not make it an American invention.

America didn't even invent Football without Canada's help (or at least the competition of Canada's own football program evolving). Both started from Rugby, both evolved. Both at the exact same time.

Basketball is Canadian...Ice hockey...Lacrosse...the blackberry...time zones...electron microscope...washing machines...electric stove (yes, Canadian)...PACE MAKERS...all Canadian...

Many famous European inventions....radio wave frequency of hertz...submarine communication...first mechanoelectric tv system .... handwriting....feasibility of RADIO communication...electric battery...the zamboni (of all things not canadian) is italian!

American inventions are numerous too...artificial heart...sewing machine...telegraph key....airplanes (not cars!)...motorcycle (contested)....oil well (contested)....laser...video games...volleyball...

I have to stop listing American inventions...not that there's anymore then any place else...it's that some of the information for the American inventions on an American website *cough* contradicts websites elsewhere...some also being American.

But you get the point. Some inventions America has claimed may be contested, but the US has contributed a lot....even if it's for things you don't normally think about.

The point is: Don't assume that the US is the inventor of 95% of technologies. ESPECIALLY when that's all Japan has to export.....they have no resources. The Japanese invent and innovate like crazy these days (only way to make money on a resource-less island).

or computers? or movies? I forgot those. I can't think of any technology besides video games that I use everyday that wasn't an American invention, and even video games wouldn't have been possible without computers and programming first...

#199 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:31pm by FlaminYawn

Computer science is widely regarded to be the invention of Alan Turing, British. Wikipedia tells me that the first programmable computing machine was German: the Zuse Z3 in May 1941. America didn't make one until the next year.

#202 - On 09/17/2009 at 7:43pm by musu

#234 - On 09/17/2009 at 9:37pm by skataboi76

In my opinion the cop is a wimp. Instead of catching a crackhead, a murderer, or a rapist he goes after someone going 10 over the limit, the cop should go after people who are truly dangerous to society, espically if the said cop isn't going to pull over EVERYONE going over the limit. Don't get me wrong, the police are needed, I just don't think they always do what they should be doing. A guy driving 10 over the speed limit isn't dangerous, a crackhead breaking in and terrorizing a family because he needs money for his next fix is dangerous, yet if given a choice I'm betting most cops will go after the speeder because it's the easy job, and that sickens me. I hope this cops takes this ticket and remembers that his time could be better spent and the people better served by going after some drug addict or something

#235 - On 09/17/2009 at 9:48pm by Besker

This is my favorite FML ever.

There are two kinds of cops in the world, doesn't matter which country or city: those who are there to actually police (i.e. keep the gears of society turning smoothly, acting when necessary) and those who just have a chip on their shoulder and want to harrass as many people as possible.

The latter kind are usually guys who got beat up a lot in high school. And are usually the ones who pull drivers over for going barely above a speed limit.

Cops like you make for more work for the decent cops because many people assume you're all a bunch of assholes. Maybe that $250 fine will help you understand what kind of person you've been and you'll take the opportunity to improve your attitude.

#236 - On 09/17/2009 at 9:51pm by FerrariCake

VERY well said FerrariCake.

poster: serves you right for giving the ticket for just 10 miles over the limit and not following YOUR guidelines.

#237 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:00pm by etantao

No, there's two kinds of people in the world, good/bad people. Sadly both get employed in the police force.

And again, I think you're stupid for defending a driver who was speeding.

#242 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:23pm by DrunkenValor

How much you wanna bet OSHA guy was bored and sped on purpose to see if he can get a cop for not wearing the vest?

#238 - On 09/17/2009 at 10:07pm by surferbabe

good. an $84 ticket for doing ten over the limit. what the fuck is that! I'm glad he gave you a huge ticket. he shoukdve added on some more just for being a douche.

YOU DESERVE IT. Pretty much EVERYWHERE I've driven, speed limits are OVERLY cautious, so ten over, whether km or mi, is really insignificant.

#271 - On 09/18/2009 at 1:28am by noshitsherlock

Not exempt from punishment just because everyone else does it...
I speed myself, but I agree with this cop. If I get busted, that's MY fault, not the cop's. Cop is just doing his job.

That's like saying... if you were a cashier, and people could only write checks for over ten dollars in your store, you should allow some customer to write for over twenty dollars because that's what everybody wants to/tries to do. No. It's store policy. Doesn't matter what you think or what other people think, you need to be a good worker and follow the rules.

And the rules say for this cop that he has to pull over speeding people. I'm actually more disappointed in the cops who let people get away with it, because it shows they have no respect for their job, submit to peer pressure ("everyone does it!"), and that probably when a big bust comes down and the person happens to be a friend, relative, a nice person, etc, they'd let them go (no resolve).

#272 - On 09/18/2009 at 2:04am by DameGreyWulf

(god damn lag and time limits don't work together lol)
And, I personally have to wonder... if the cop had pulled over someone else but still wasn't wearing his vest, would this guy have fined him? Basically, I'm thinking the guy was just out for revenge.

Don't get me wrong though, the cop still deserves his fine for not having the vest on. They both deserve it simultaneously for breaking the law, not for doing their jobs, which in turn corrected each other... which is what makes this rather amusing.

#286 - On 09/18/2009 at 9:20am by _THE_MASTER_

Hm let's see where the world ends up without law enforcement. Looks like a pretty grim picture to me...
Yes there are corrupt cops. Just like there are corrupt polictians, corporate leaders, social workers, etc. Corruption makes headlines because supposedly "It's more interesting." Corruption is everywhere. The human nature is weak. People like to see other peoples' suffering to make them feel better about their own lives. Unless it's some dramatic, heroic act, you're not likely to see all the good things police officers do published front page because they're doing there job. Just like this officer was doing his job. He didn't make the laws. But he chose a career to uphold them. Yes, he should have been wearing his vest, and that's why he deserves his fine too. But there is no reason he should be yelled at and name called for doing his job. You speed, you accept the fact that you could be pulled over and ticketed for it. Simple as that. Doesn't matter how much faster over the speed limit is.

#288 - On 09/18/2009 at 9:52am by GotWhateverItIs

(I think this is more appropriate here...)

#294 - On 09/18/2009 at 11:40am by Manicomio

"if someone doesn't feel the need to wear a seat belt to go down the block, they shouldn't have to be punished like a child for using their own judgment. Are you hurting anyone else? No. People should be able to do whatever they want to themselves as long as they aren't hurting others in the process. "

So let's say you're SPEEDING along and hit a patch of water, start hydroplaning, hid a median, get ejected from the car for NOT WEARING YOUR SEATBELT, and land in the middle of the road causing an even larger accident because they need to swerve around you/slam on their breaks/or run right over you.
Yes, I realize that this is an extreme situation, but it could still happen. As a driver you're endangering others on the road just by being there. That is why cops are present to regulate speeding, going slower than the minimum, make sure seatbelts are worn, etc. If they paid no attention to the speeds of drivers, there would be hell on wheels out there.

"People hate cops because a great majority of them are power hungry/abusing assholes."

How can you say a great majority? Have you met a great majority of officers? I could say a great majority of officers are very nice and pleasant to be around because based on my experience, they have been. Have I got ticketed for speeding? Yes. Where they assholes about it? No. Did I deserve it? Yes, I was going TEN over the speed limit. And yes, I've had other run ins with cops. Not once did I feel that they were abusing their power. Not once did I feel that they were being too particular. I deserved every run in I have had and not once have I lost the respect that I have for their profession. Their presence is necessary. They need to enforce the laws in front of them. If they didn't, people would just keep pushing the boundaries. Like I said earlier, "Give them an inch, they take a mile."

#314 - On 09/18/2009 at 5:22pm by GotWhateverItIs

Wow. Driver and cop were both breaking the law. Driver and cop were both fined for it. Driver and cop both deserve it for knowing better.

I hate speed limits and disagree with their existence. I might also hate rape laws. THAT DOESN'T MEAN I CAN GET PISSED WHEN I GET PUNISHED FOR BREAKING THEM, especially if you KNOW they exist.

Have you ever raised this concern at your local town hall or city council meeting? How about sending letters to your state legislature? Joining an activist group to change the way cops work in the country? OP was doing his JOB. It doesn't matter if the law is right or wrong; that's for the legislature and the judicial to decide. It is his job to enforce that law. Don't direct your anger at him for doing his job. You're the type of person to get angry at your waiter when the food takes too long to get out, when it's pretty clearly the fault of the kitchen staff.

#313 - On 09/18/2009 at 4:46pm by insomniacdude

i think both the cop and the other guy did what they should have. although it sucks a little more for the cop because his ticket was a little more expensive but oh well its what you get when you break the rules.

and i also think it sucks the cop gave the guy a ticket for doing 10 over. but thats just my opinion.

YDI for being a douche and pulling someone over for 10 mph. Karma's a bitch.

#340 - On 09/27/2009 at 12:25am by aq2004

Why is everyone calling him a dick/douche for pulling someone over for being 10 over the speed limit? What is so wrong about that? It's his f***ing job. Get over it.

#341 - On 09/27/2009 at 7:22am by strata8

#314 has hit the spot. In Sydney, you will ALWAYS get fined if you're caught going 10 over the speed limit. Why? Because the speed limit is there for a reason. Hell, most people drive UNDER the speed limit, just to be safe.

#342 - On 09/27/2009 at 7:56am by strata8

cops like you make me fucking sick. youre a waste of time, taxpayer money and a waste of life. You police disgust me. you prolly got picked on in high school and no girls would touch your dick so you decided to put on the badge so you could be Billy badass. i hope you enjoyed a taste of your own medicine. suck it easy officer

You're a disgrace to your own profession. I'm sick of cops setting up speed-traps so they can rake in more money. Don't pretend that you think going 50mph in a 40mph zone is actually a significant danger. I'm sure you've done more than 30mph over the speed limit at some point in your life, and I can't imagine that you don't do 10 over regularly. Stop being a greedy hypocrite and do your job.

#346 - On 10/13/2009 at 4:28pm by Flamingmonkey923

cops are only doing their jobs.

stfu and get over it.

Meh, a lot of stories about people getting pulled over on fmylife. Its nice to hear a story from the other side! They're human too.

This is great. I am so happy you got your fine. I don't know what it's like in WA, but in NSW all the speed cameras do is raise revenue for the government and create aggression on the roads. It also causes people to make up for not being able to speed on the motorways by driving recklessly in residential zones. I got a fine of $90 for being 11km over the limit out of the Sydney Harbour Tunnel, but since it was a public holiday, I had to lose 6 points (double demerits, half of my license). The Australian system is ridiculous, the Hume Hwy being 110km/hr is absoloutely ridiculous and should definitely be 150. I hope this fine makes you reconsider working for such a corrupt and unjust system.

i find it retarded that americans think we use mph lofl (laugh out fucking loud) , the name says auscop so its obvious its Australian.. but i would agree that the laws for both countrys are shit, thats probably why they think its a US post haha

you can fine up to 500 dollars for disagreeing with a police officer you know.
