First, my parents weren't married either and it never was a problem and they had three children.
Second, I live in France, so maybe the rules are different but in case of emergencies (like hospitalization if that what you mean), there are other status than "married couple" that can be taken into account and are recognized so it's not really a problem either.
As for filing taxes, they're quite happy doing them separetely for now...
I love how people assume that if they were in the OP's situation, they would have already known. It's completely possible to be with someone for several years, and not ever know they're cheating on you. Yes, some people are actually THAT good. Hmm I agree with #53.. She could've been lying about her birthday (although 8 years?! You think he'd have seen her driver's license by then), but what about holidays? Also, she could've had two sets of friends hanging out with her with each boyfriend, but not two families.. I can't think of any good way to keep up two good, non-stop relationships for anywhere near this amount of time. Maybe the "non-stop" part is the trick.. It could have been long-distance, or one of the people involved could've had a military job which made seeing each other somewhat infrequent.

At first when I read this, I thought there was no way this could happen unless the OP was a complete dumbass, but after reading some of the comments and giving it some thought, I really feel sorry that this happened and since you are only given soo much space when submitting an FML, there is a lot we don't know.
For one thing, we have no clue how old the OP and his now ex-girlfriend were when they started dating. As in, maybe they started dating in like 9th grade or something. If the now ex-girlfriend and the OP went to different high schools and then different colleges, then she may have easily been able to keep it from him. This scenerio would also work for those who have commented on them not being married or wondering if they did or did not live together.

My father cheated on my mother for 4 years without her knowing. He actually had 2 girlfriends on the side and a family he was taking care of in another city. The worse thing is having your 12 year old daughter tell you everything that's been going on and you had no clue.
This does happen. I work nights, four nights a week I sleep at work, I pull a lot of overtime, either me or my boyfriend could easily have another relationship going on without the other realizing it.
