Man or woman?

Today, I went to my university bookstore and tried to use my debit card to pay, but got the "Insufficient Funds" notification. I was buying a single postage stamp, which costs 57 cents. FML

I agree, your life sucks (14764) - you totally deserved it (5762)

One time when I was 16, I wrote a check and got charged 30 dollars by the bank for overdrawing my account. What was the magical purchase? A soda... for $1.05.

Life lesson learned: learn to balance your account! So you'll have money to spend, even for silly things like stamps, sodas, or whatever.

#1 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:00pm by NorfolkDude

why the hell do you pay for a soda with a check?
and why fuck did you try to pay for a postage stamp with a debit card?

#6 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:20pm by Duckasaurus

hey, at least you didn't get an overdraft fee for $30. The new york times did an article about overdraft fees earlier (this is not spam, this is information)

@1 and so you should have for being a pain in the ass. you and this asshole both deserve it.

#28 - On 10/30/2009 at 11:35pm by organisedchaos

THIS.

#38 - On 10/31/2009 at 5:42am by fae

TBF you deserve what you get for trying to use your card for 57 cents. Next time, go to the ATM and take some cash out - and check your balance at the same time. Its because of people like you that I end up queueing 10 minutes longer than necessary in the supermarket when I'm on lunch. There is no excuse for even considering paying for something under $10 on card.

#57 - On 11/02/2009 at 7:37pm by lordash

try applying for food stamps

#2 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:04pm by benshady

people. you really need to know how much money you have.

#3 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:09pm by ruben7467

You used a debit card to buy one stamp!? I'm surprised they'd even consider accepting it.

#4 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:13pm by cthulhu1138

It's your own fault, you need to keep on top of checking your account online.

#5 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:19pm by Inked2009

#8 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:23pm by Th217

if you are irresponsible and weren't paying attention to how much money you had in your account ... YDI.

if you balance your account regularly and knew you had $1,000, and this post is about how you discovered someone had stolen your identity and charged shit to your card ... FYL.

need more info, OP!

#9 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:26pm by dancingyrlie

why would you even try buying that with your debit? even homeless people carry around a little more than that in change. maybe you should start pan handling.

#10 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:31pm by alexandriababyy

you deserve the shit outta that.... 57 cents is chump change! go round up some spare change instead of buying that on debit

#11 - On 10/30/2009 at 8:53pm by notsponsored3043

#12 - On 10/30/2009 at 9:07pm by realsiq

#13 - On 10/30/2009 at 9:17pm by Reefer_Madness

I hope you aren't a finance major.

#22 - On 10/30/2009 at 10:18pm by ragsy

1.) why would you purchase a postage stamp with a debit card?
2.) most small businesses have to pay processing fees, so they don't accept purchases on cards for less than 5$, or else they end up losing money.

#23 - On 10/30/2009 at 10:24pm by abbymybowl

You used a DEBIT CARD for 57 cents? If you don't have enough cash to pay for anything less than 20 bucks you don't deserve to have it.

#24 - On 10/30/2009 at 10:48pm by ssnickel

If you dont even have 57 cents, I cant even imagine how you pay for tuition. You may as well work at the damn bookstore.

I can't believe the number of 'I agree' outweighs the number of 'you deserved it'. You totally deserved that shit.

Go look between the couch cushions.

#29 - On 10/30/2009 at 11:50pm by clumsykatie

At least you can pay for college?

#30 - On 10/30/2009 at 11:54pm by roflpenguin

I use my debit card for everything too. Swiping a card is easier than counting out bills or change.

#31 - On 10/31/2009 at 12:09am by jane99

get a job...campus jobs are easy to get.

#32 - On 10/31/2009 at 12:39am by kinger09

Everyone makes mistakes. I accidentally bought an album on iTunes using my touch, and lost $30. I would have afforded what I intended to buy though.

#33 - On 10/31/2009 at 12:51am by Super_Vegetto

You're from Canada, postage stamps are only 54 cents for within Canada right now, not 57.

#35 - On 10/31/2009 at 2:04am by katneko

What would be really ironic would be if you were getting the stamp to mail a deposit.

#36 - On 10/31/2009 at 2:43am by Ninjaface

welcome to college.

#37 - On 10/31/2009 at 2:59am by cmac86

They wouldn't let you use a debit card. They would have actually lost money if they did.

#39 - On 10/31/2009 at 5:56am by strata8

why were you using your debit card for fifty something cents? just to let you know, the charge the bank charges for the transaction probably cost more than the stamp.. ydi

#40 - On 10/31/2009 at 6:41am by Paige_Nicole10

i must say i can sympathise with this person. once my card declined, albeit for a university textbook, and i had never been so embarrassed in my entire life.

lol. every one in Alberta is stupid. oil sucking retards!

#44 - On 10/31/2009 at 12:06pm by jetranger778

Shut up. So yes, this was a stupid FML. Alberta is not a completely idiotic province. Where are you from? Some hick town in Saskatchewan?

#48 - On 10/31/2009 at 3:05pm by CanadasTX

You're a moron. You can't pay for anything under a dollar with a debit card. That's why it said insufficient funds. Why do you have a debit card if you don't even know how it works? And who buys just one stamp? FAKE!

#45 - On 10/31/2009 at 12:25pm by deelightful

I go to college and I never have cash on me. That is the purpose of my debit card. To take the place of cash. I have made extremely small purchases on my debit card because I carry no cash. Its not dumb to make those purchases. With myself I find it easier to keep track of my money in debit form rather than cash, I'm less likely to spend it on frivolous things or even lose it.

#46 - On 10/31/2009 at 1:23pm by gz

Just be glad it told you and you weren't charged the overdraft fee

#47 - On 10/31/2009 at 1:57pm by joshizzle3

when I tried to use my debit card on a candy bar the cash register rejected it because the amount wasn't over a dollar but I still had money in the account

#49 - On 10/31/2009 at 3:46pm by Askarlupka

welcome to college

#50 - On 10/31/2009 at 9:51pm by gordonskatespc

Who pays for a single stamp by debit?

#51 - On 10/31/2009 at 11:31pm by Diogen

How broke are you? How do you afford to eat every day? You might was to consider getting a job. Maybe something like prostitution, er, I mean escorting. I mean, c'mon, using a card to pay for a single stamp?

#52 - On 11/01/2009 at 12:13am by jonny2x4

You don't even have 57 cents in your account?
wowww
fuck this recession

#53 - On 11/01/2009 at 1:55am by mk810

poorcollegestudent, i know how embarrassing it is. I was in the store buying a packet of stamps, with a line of people behind me. The cashier ran my debit card along the swipe machine, and turns out i only could afford to buy one stamp. MOST. EMBARRASSING. MOMENT. EVER!!!

#54 - On 11/01/2009 at 3:14am by frostie

Check your account. Perhaps your parents withdrew money under the table?

I had the opposite happen to me. I was *not* keeping track of my spending, and my parents were secretly adding money to my account. I thought I had rationed out $100 for the whole year, but in reality I spent over $1000.

#55 - On 11/01/2009 at 3:41pm by xenomorph

i hear ya

#56 - On 11/01/2009 at 7:47pm by ali89246

ydi for using your debit card on anything less the 5 dollars. Who the hell goes to the candy store, buys a lollipop and uses a debit card... same principle. Asif you wouldn't birng at least a dollar in ur purse/wallet.

#58 - On 11/04/2009 at 6:26am by ti3n_t
