One time when I was 16, I wrote a check and got charged 30 dollars by the bank for overdrawing my account. What was the magical purchase? A soda... for $1.05.
Life lesson learned: learn to balance your account! So you'll have money to spend, even for silly things like stamps, sodas, or whatever.
why the hell do you pay for a soda with a check?
and why fuck did you try to pay for a postage stamp with a debit card?
hey, at least you didn't get an overdraft fee for $30. The new york times did an article about overdraft fees earlier (this is not spam, this is information)

TBF you deserve what you get for trying to use your card for 57 cents. Next time, go to the ATM and take some cash out - and check your balance at the same time. Its because of people like you that I end up queueing 10 minutes longer than necessary in the supermarket when I'm on lunch. There is no excuse for even considering paying for something under $10 on card.
try applying for food stamps
people. you really need to know how much money you have.
You used a debit card to buy one stamp!? I'm surprised they'd even consider accepting it.
It's your own fault, you need to keep on top of checking your account online.

if you are irresponsible and weren't paying attention to how much money you had in your account ... YDI.
if you balance your account regularly and knew you had $1,000, and this post is about how you discovered someone had stolen your identity and charged shit to your card ... FYL.
need more info, OP!
why would you even try buying that with your debit? even homeless people carry around a little more than that in change. maybe you should start pan handling.
you deserve the shit outta that.... 57 cents is chump change! go round up some spare change instead of buying that on debit
go look under your car seats, you will find the money there

you fail at balancing your checking account, YDI... bigtime
HAHHAHA YOU DESERVE IT! Come back when you can afford it!
I know how to balance my checkbook fairly well and im 12...
YDI. Who the hell pays for 57 cents with a card?
What's your address? I'll send you a whole dollar. =]
some places won't take a card if the amount is under a dollar ydi for not keeping track of your spending now go get a.job
i've been there haha.
it was depressssing
I hope you aren't a finance major.
1.) why would you purchase a postage stamp with a debit card?
2.) most small businesses have to pay processing fees, so they don't accept purchases on cards for less than 5$, or else they end up losing money.
You used a DEBIT CARD for 57 cents? If you don't have enough cash to pay for anything less than 20 bucks you don't deserve to have it.
If you dont even have 57 cents, I cant even imagine how you pay for tuition. You may as well work at the damn bookstore.

I can't believe the number of 'I agree' outweighs the number of 'you deserved it'. You totally deserved that shit.
Go look between the couch cushions.
At least you can pay for college?
I use my debit card for everything too. Swiping a card is easier than counting out bills or change.

get a job...campus jobs are easy to get.
Everyone makes mistakes. I accidentally bought an album on iTunes using my touch, and lost $30. I would have afforded what I intended to buy though.
You're from Canada, postage stamps are only 54 cents for within Canada right now, not 57.
What would be really ironic would be if you were getting the stamp to mail a deposit.
They wouldn't let you use a debit card. They would have actually lost money if they did.
why were you using your debit card for fifty something cents? just to let you know, the charge the bank charges for the transaction probably cost more than the stamp.. ydi
i must say i can sympathise with this person. once my card declined, albeit for a university textbook, and i had never been so embarrassed in my entire life.
lol. every one in Alberta is stupid. oil sucking retards!
Shut up. So yes, this was a stupid FML. Alberta is not a completely idiotic province. Where are you from? Some hick town in Saskatchewan?
You're a moron. You can't pay for anything under a dollar with a debit card. That's why it said insufficient funds. Why do you have a debit card if you don't even know how it works? And who buys just one stamp? FAKE!
I go to college and I never have cash on me. That is the purpose of my debit card. To take the place of cash. I have made extremely small purchases on my debit card because I carry no cash. Its not dumb to make those purchases. With myself I find it easier to keep track of my money in debit form rather than cash, I'm less likely to spend it on frivolous things or even lose it.

Just be glad it told you and you weren't charged the overdraft fee
when I tried to use my debit card on a candy bar the cash register rejected it because the amount wasn't over a dollar but I still had money in the account

Who pays for a single stamp by debit?
How broke are you? How do you afford to eat every day? You might was to consider getting a job. Maybe something like prostitution, er, I mean escorting. I mean, c'mon, using a card to pay for a single stamp?
You don't even have 57 cents in your account?
wowww
fuck this recession
poorcollegestudent, i know how embarrassing it is. I was in the store buying a packet of stamps, with a line of people behind me. The cashier ran my debit card along the swipe machine, and turns out i only could afford to buy one stamp. MOST. EMBARRASSING. MOMENT. EVER!!!
Check your account. Perhaps your parents withdrew money under the table?
I had the opposite happen to me. I was *not* keeping track of my spending, and my parents were secretly adding money to my account. I thought I had rationed out $100 for the whole year, but in reality I spent over $1000.
ydi for using your debit card on anything less the 5 dollars. Who the hell goes to the candy store, buys a lollipop and uses a debit card... same principle. Asif you wouldn't birng at least a dollar in ur purse/wallet.
Anyone who doesn't have time to count change.
