Today, I parked my truck next to a rather large SUV at school, went to class for 8 hours straight, came back and found my passenger side door crumpled from where they had backed out and hit it. They left a note on my window that said, "Sorry about your truck, but I don't have insurance." FML

Most people (unless they're on a half-day Senior schedule) in school with a car are there the whole day. It couldn't have been a late start student, either, because late start usually arrives second and third hour, and I would assume half day students leave at lunch.

If it is a high school its simple....ask the school for the video, if they dont give it then look at the paint in your door....I am sure there are not too many people who drive rather large SUVs of a certain color....so find them all and see if any ring a bell (bumper stickers, etc).....then break everything possible on that SUV.

There should be cameras in the parking lot at school. This happened to my friend last year, and once they saw the car and its driver they had to pay for the damages, insurance or no.

A fingerprint would be useless unless they are already in the system. Plus I doubt police would take the time/money to take and analyze fingerprints for minor property damage. File a police report and next time your at school keep an eye out in the parking lot for a similar SUV with damage where it should be in case they haven't gotten it fixed already.

Or be normal and file a police report and file a claim on your insurance.
In Tennessee? Millions. At least hundreds of thousands. Small, economical cars are the minority in that state.

Have you told the police? They can analyze the note for fingerprints (when you get your license you are required to give your prints) so they can probably find out who did it. Good luck.

Maybe in your area you have to give fingerprints, but not in every state. Tennessee doesn't require fingerprinting, so it doesn't help the OP in this case.
As for the OP, contact the school and the police. I'm sure there is damage to the other person's vehicle and if they are a student at the school, there will be records from their permit as well as they will be attending the school, so you can catch them.

Find out about cameras in the parking lot and report it to the police. You don't know that the SUV did it, but if there are cameras you should be able to tell. Also, give the note to the police, they might be able to get some fingerprints.

You parked next to, not behind right? How did the side get dented? What difference does it make what kind of car was parked next to you, it could have been an entirely different car/truck that hit you. Sucks they don't have insurance, but try to leave out pointless details next time.
Find out if your school has video cameras where you parked at. Write doen the make and model of the SUV if you remember it. Scrape off some of the paint left on your truck form the SUV. It may be a kind of paint that not many people use or it could be different kinds of paint left from previous paint jobs. Give that info to both the police and the school and hopefully they will go through records of SUV's who have that kind of paint. If the guy really didn't have insurance then it will be easier for the school to look up all people with SUV's of that color/make/model who have insurance and mark them off the list leaving very few, if more than one, suspect(s) left. Also park next to non-huge cars or away from them now on so this won't happen again.

Females get into more little accidents that don't cost much usually. Guys usually get into big accidents that cost a lot. Which is why if I put my husband as the main driver of our Rav4 instead of me the insurance goes up about $30 on it.
Personally, I would still file a police report against them if you know the license plate #, it's illegal to be driving without insurance anyway, and your insurance company would usually pay for fixing your truck and then go after the person to pay for it.
At least you got a note. Someone backed into my driver's side door last year while I was away from my car and they drove away leaving no note whatsoever.

3. The simplest way to find this hick is to file a police report. Believe it or not, they can search for a car that matches the damage, and send out reports to local body shops asking to report any car coming to fix damage like that.

#71 - I'm sorry to hear about your friend, and that is quite unfortunate that he had to go through that process. My friend was involved in a hit and run, and the cops found the asshole at no charge, so I can't imagine why the police department asked him to pay anything. For what I know, the insurance should cover any sort of processing fee, if the OP has insurance.
Driving without insurance is illegal, but it doesn't stop people from not doing it. Much like smoking weed, drinking underage, etc.
But the only thing she can really do is file a police report. It will be literally impossible to find the car who could have done it, without security camera. Unless of course, she does find the same SUV and it had any sort of fresh damage done. There is no fee for filing a police report, but there is a fee for the copy. But, at this time it is probably too late; you are supposed to file it as soon as it occurs.
How big is your school? I bet if you spend some time looking around the school at the time of day you last saw that SUV there, you could find it. It's the one with the big ding on the front driver side fender. Then you can slash their tires and leave a note that says "sorry about your tires, but I don't have insurance." No point in trying to sue for damages... a student without insurance is gonna have NOTHING for you to go after.
74 that's not entirely true on the nothing to go after....In the case of the OP winning a civil suit against the person who caused the damages there are several things that could happen. The first being they have the money to pay. If they don't their assets (vehicle, property, etc) will be leined. Their bank account may also be considered an asset which could be taken to pay the suit. If they have any income a substantial part of it is able to be garnished (it will be held by the employer and sent directly to the creditor). The main issue is the time, effort and money involved in a suit.
This is why I tell people to freakin buy the UM/UIM insurance (especially in TN since SC doesn't require drivers to even hold liability coverage).

That's why you have uninsured motorist coverage. If you don't then you are a moron considering most people don't have the coverage. Just call your insurance company and it should be fine. Hopefully you didn't move your car without taking pictures and pictures of the note.
I used to work for an insurance company. I dealt with new claims...this is actually really common. Usually what happens, is that someone is a witness...and says, "Hey, you hit their care, are you going to leave them a note?" So the offender says, "Oh yeah, I'll do that..." Starts writing out a note to appease the stranger, and then leaves a rude note instead. Sometimes the stranger has already taken down the info of the offender...so they can also leave a note when the offender drives away. But apparently not everyone gets that lucky. Sorry! Also..it's highly unlikely a police department would check for fingerprints on a note to find the offender. So unlikely...that they would probably laugh at you.
Your one possibility for hope is that they also attend the school and will be parked nearby again...and you can find them, take their info, then file a police report and a claim with your insurance company...it's their job to investigate it, even if you don't have coverage that repairs your car, regardless of who is at-fault.
