As for the use of the word retard, my brother (who I adore very much) happens to be mentally retarded and I don't have any problem with the word. It's not like people use it literally to attack autistic children. It's in no way shape or form offensive towards those who are mentally retarded, just the stupid people that the insult is being directed towards.
Autism and Mental retardardation are completely different. Granted, Severe Autism can manifest itself in a similar manner as Mental Retardation, they are two completely different disorders. Some autistic people are Semi independent , or in some cases, able to live on their own independently, whereas many Mentally retarded people require lifetime care. My neighbor's son is Autistic, and lives in an apartment in a special complex for people who require on call nursing. He never uses it, has a driver's lisense, a job, and a fiance. he lives a very normal life.

I gotta say, we have been programmed to find the term 'retarded' as the more offensive term. We say mentally challenged/handicapped and almost everything else first. Maybe i'm hyper aware of this as I grew up interacting with this community. My step-brother is challenged and aside from the more recognized 'Special Olympics', it seemed that just about every other term was used for group functions. Not quite true, Qup. The handicapped are much like other people. It depends on how they are raised, like anyone else. Example: My brother. He had a stroke when he was born, and that obviously caused some problems. He is, however, a nice kid although he sometimes needs someone to step in and keep him in line. On the other side of the coin you can look at some of the Special Ed kids in my school. They know they will never get punished, so they go around hitting guys in the nuts (not joking) and swearing at the top of their lungs. They can be selfish and rude, or kind and helpful, just like anyone else.
Don't generalize here.
Saying things like "They may be slow mentally, but that's okay because each and every one of them is a precious little angel whispering in God's ear" isn't as forward-thinking and helpful as you might think. They are as flawed as everyone else, as they are real people. See how that works?

I had about the same happen to me. I was out with a friend while two of our other friends were at the one's house and I asked why they wouldn't just leave home and come out with us. I have to say I do have negative feelings towards the use of "retard" outside the politically correct terms. My brother has Down Syndrome and I saw him come home crying becausae of people using that word. I do understand, however and unfortunatly, that it is becoming a part of society's vocabulary.
