Today, the car in front of me was going slow and I flashed my lights and honked. I floored it and passed the car, flipping off the driver. Just as I went around the next corner I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop. A few seconds later, the guy I flipped off drove by honked and waved. FML

I never have either :) I hate Speeders. I hate creepers (people who sit a few km/miles above the speed limit and think it's ok).
People who speed put everyone else on the road in danger, not just themselves.
If you creep over the speed limit even if it is 48 in a 45 mph zone:
* There is less time to avoid an impending crash. - in an accident where you may have just knocked someone over, you could kill them because your stopping distance is extended.
* You will need a greater distance to stop the vehicle in order to avoid a crash.
* You increase your chances of being involved in a crash
If you are Creeping and involved in a road crash:
* You can seriously injury or possibly kill yourself or others involved in a road crash.
* Your body is subjected to greater physical force that will cause severe injury or possibly death.
* You may have to live with lifelong injuries.
* The protection that seatbelts and airbags are designed to provide is reduced.
Pedestrians and bicyclists will almost certainly be severely injured if struck by a vehicle creeping over the speed limit.
Do you know anything of physics? 3 mph over any speed does not drastically increase stopping distance. If anything its increased by a couple inches. You have the same risk of being involved in an accident at any speed, though you do increase the chances of it being fatal. Accidents are caused by lack of driver awareness. If a pedestrian or cyclist gets hit while their in the road its their own damn fault for being in the road in the first place. Never assume that the driver of the vehicle sees you. Car vs. human, car always wins. I'm assuming, of course, the absence of a bike path or side walk for cyclist and that there is no crosswalk system for pedestrians. I hate pedestrians that take their own sweet time to walk across the street and expect you to stop. F-THAT! No crosswalk means I could run your ass down and say you just jumped out in the way.

The speed limits were defined when cars were 4,500 lb steel death traps. Today's cars are much more capable, but the speed limits have not risen to reflect that. IMO, its because the speed limits are revenue generators. The speed limit on the perimeter in Atlanta is 55 mph. If you are going 55, YOU are the one going to cause a crash. Everyone safely does 70-80 mph and things go smoothly. Its when you get the asshole in the second to left lane going 55mph that things get out of control. Slower traffic keep right!

More often than not, driving steadily slightly above or below the speed limit is the result of the driver having an inaccurate speedometer. In fact, most speedometers are not perfectly accurate, and most drivers cannot tell the difference.
People need to get over the idea that speeding causes accidents. Driving without due care causes accidents, as does speed inappropriate to the road conditions and/or ability of the vehicle. Over here the speed limit on rural single carriageway roads is 60mph. Most of the time, it isn't safe or practical to even approach that speed on those roads, but if I were to have an accident doing 55, they wouldn't attribute it to speeding. Now consider that on 6 lane motorways, the speed limit is 70. I could be doing 75 at 2am with no other vehicle in sight, and by your reckoning be driving dangerously. It makes no sense.

At that point I'm not sure the 3mph difference you talked about is really going to matter if the accident occurs in a 45mph zone. 45mph in a lower speed zone though is a completely different story.

If I'm going faster than traffic around me, I'm closer to the fast lane. If I'm going slower, I'm in the slow lane. If you tailgate me to try to change my driving habits, I slow down (to "give you more time to react" at that distance of course :-D)

Where I come from it is still against the law to "obstruct traffic" so "going slow in the slow lane" has its limits and is a ticketable offense.

not true at all. i live roughly 45 minutes from uni, if i am on the offensive and overtake slow drivers, speed 5kms over the limit and shit, i can be there up to 20 minutes earlier than if im passive and put up with their shit driving.

A part of me wants to tell you to shut the fuck up and stop perpetuating stereotypes even if you're just joking, but I've also driven enough years to know that some stereotypes are there for a reason.
Anyhow, my aunt is an Asian (obviously female) driver, and she has never gotten a single ticket because she drives safely and quite well. She drives a lot better than other people, men, women, Asian, Caucasian, African American, Hispanic, whatever.
I do notice that a lot of female drivers tend to be overaggressive sometimes, but damn so are guys. I especially hate the cars that go at 90MPH on the freeway and have "pimped out" white lights, blazing like they're on Fast and Furious or something. Stop overcompensating, bitches.

People like my aunt drive at the speed limit, but what keeps them from getting into accidents is probably that they are more attentive to the road.
Anyhow, the reason I can't refute the stereotype completely is because I'm female, and I don't drive at the speed limit (I confess, I hate slow drivers). I'm guessing that this is true across both genders and across different ethnicities though, so I'm not sure what fool came up with these stereotypes that women and Asian people in particular can't drive well.

I admit it, I'm a creeper, and on my way to work everyday there's always at least one car going 40 or 38 or whatever and the speed limit it 45 (I usually go about 49 or 50), and it's only one lane each way. You know what I do? I surely don't tailgate because that exacerbates the problem! I sit back, go 40, and when it opens up to two lanes, then I just calmly go my regular speed and pass them. No flipping off, no honking, nothing. And you know what it cost me? about two minutes of patience and time. I'm not pissed off, they drive how they want and I drive how I want. And we're both happy!

the same thing kinda happened to me. i was lost and a saw a cop checking speed limits. then i decided to turn around to see if i could find the free way. i knew the cop was there but i had forgotten where so i drove at speed limit for about 10 minutes. the car behind me finally got tired of me and drove passed me as we were turning the curve. thats exactlly where the cop was. i wanted to honk but i was scared he would pull me over for that.
Okay, normally I try to give people the benefit of the doubt when it comes to doing obnoxious stuff like this. I try to see things from their point of view, and consider that the course of action might have seemed appropriate at the time. But in this case, I just can't muster up any sympathy for you at all.
There are few things more unsettling, distracting, and upsetting than having some moron crawling up your rear end, honking at you, and cutting you off because you're not going as fast as he (or she) thinks you should be. There's absolutely no excuse for behaving that way. It accomplishes absolutely nothing of value.
This may come as a surprise to you, but people don't drive slowly for the specific purpose of pissing you off. There are countless legitimate reasons to drive slowly, and none of them have anything to do with you. Maybe he was afraid of getting a speeding ticket. Maybe it was dark/raining/foggy and he wasn't confident enough to speed up. Maybe he was an inexperienced driver. Maybe he was in an unfamiliar area and trying to find the correct turn without missing it.
When you don't feel that someone in front of you is going fast enough, don't pull obnoxious crap, especially honking. Using the horn just because you're pissed only unnerves the driver--which will probably just make him slow down, especially if he's at an intersection. And more importantly, it makes you look like a lunatic, and everyone in the area will hate you for startling them. Sure, in some cases a driver really will be going dangerously slowly. In that case, just keep a reasonable distance and wait for an opportunity to pass legally. Don't turn yourself into the jerk by behaving more obnoxiously than he is.
Try learning a little patience. And maybe you should also try to remember that the other driver is a human being too. Just because you're both inside cars doesn't make it appropriate for you to treat him like crap.

This FML caused me to realize something both terrible and wonderful. When I was in a driver's ed class for a speeding ticket (bastards!) a clip was shown regarding how ordinarily nice, sane people can, when behind the wheel, become terrible, heartless human beings. They called this "road rage."
And I realized, since I'm on FML where this happens all the time - that happens on the Internet too, where we say things more rudely than we ever would in person, either representing genuine opinions as flames or simply trolling, as we hide behind our screennames and the feeling of invulnerability and absence of responsibility, then we bounce elsewhere on the Web. You know, sort of like tailgating someone who has different opinions about driving than you do, and then driving off.
This is the wrong place for me to post this but that's okay because this is where I happen to be right now: I posit that road rage and Internet flaming are the exact same phenomena, simply taking slightly different form based on context.

Slow drivers cause more accidents than fast ones, on the whole, and there should be stricter laws regarding slowness. In an ideal world, that guy would've been pulled over long before for holding up traffic and indirectly facilitating unsafe driving from other drivers (like you speeding up around him).
That said, flipping him off was a pretty childish move. You deserve it for being a prick.

Uhh...this could have easily been Washington STATE. Not necessarily DC. Although I do agree that most drivers in that area need to drive like CRAZY!!

You deserved it. When people like you ride up on my ass, honking and doing all that crazy stupid shit, I intentionally slow back down to the speed limit (I speed too, and yet I manage to keep enough room between myself and the next car to NOT cause an accident) to rile you up further. Seriously, go as fast as you want - I don't care - just don't friggin act like an idiot. Wait for an opportunity to pass, then go. The hysterics are not required nor appreciated.
