at least he's free now.
:)
No idea what size that dog was, but regardless, you should have had him/her on a leash. YDI. :/

I agree with #3,
ever heard of a leash?
you get what you pay for.
Awww!! You should really have put it on a leash, shelter dogs can be crazy at first lol. Are you positive you'll never be able to find him? :(
He was probably nervous in a new environment.

As much as that sucks, I agree with those who've already stated the obvious: he should have been on a leash.
Did you just open the door and expect it to wait patiently for you? You say that like the dog is no longer your responsibility just because it left the yard. You're a fuking idiot, and clearly too self centered to own pets. Please find the dog and find it a real owner.
if you're going to adopt a dog, you gotta know beforehand what to do in these situations. hope you look for/find the dog
guess he rather live on teh streets
if you adopted from a shelter, most of them are microchipped now. It's part of the adoption fee. And as everyone already stated if you weren't smart enough to think to put a dog on a leash, you don't deserve one. Just because you paid for him doesn't make him realize you own him.
Aren't you going to go look for him? You don't spend 100 dollars on a dog, get pissed, sigh, then post about your pet fail on a website.
And why wasn't the dog on a leash or in a carrier? You obviously don't know enough about animals to know what to do. Poor dog was probably freaked shitless, no wonder they ran away. It's an automatic response. They don't "know" you.
I like how everyone assumes the OP didn't use a leash or was being irresponsible. I used to be a dogwalker and know how easily a dog's leash can slip, or how a dog can overpower a person. Especially if the dog is scared or under a lot of stress.
Any way, good luck finding the dog. You may want to get help next time you transport a new pet, though.
Lol that happened to me before..
Got a new dog and it had puked in the car and then when we got home trying to get him out the car the dog ran. haha.
Eh my dog pooped in my backseat. It sucks. OP I hope you find him.
Goddamn dogs. Be glad it ran off.
"I was ok with that because he was my dog"
Reminds me of this quote from Road Trip:
Kyle: It's not cheating if you spread peanut butter on your balls and let your dog lick it off.
[Josh, Rubin and E.L. are understandably repulsed]
Kyle: Because it's your dog.
Rubin: Jesus Christ!
Kyle: You know, because it's YOUR dog, get it?
Rubin: Yeah, we've got it.
If you did the responsible thing and micro chipped him/her, then he shouldn't be too far away from your collection. If not, YDI. #3 has a good point as well!

#22 - you are a sick, sick person.
Animals loose hair/fur when they stress,
they also poo when they stress.
the poor dog was freaking the fuck out.
nice one.
Poor dog, it must have been very scared... mybe you shouldn't have handled it alone if it was a big dog, and if it was small then you should have been able to keep it from running away... not very god with pets huh?
I wish someone would put people like #22 out of their misery (and us) so we wouldn't have to coexist with such awful people
Lead? Cage? Preparation? Thought?
I agree with #3. It is usually a bit tricky but you should put the leash in while you're still in the car. Leave the car, open the back doors and stand in front of the door and grab the leash asap... ;)
#22 is a total ass. A lot of dogs are born there, or people realize they're too dumb to have a dog and have to take them to shelters. You're a complete ignorant prick.
Seriously though, look for the dog. It shouldn't be homeless just because you don't what you're doing.
It's called a leash, smart one.
Many shelter dogs have been dumped, think about it the last car ride he got he ended up in the shelter, or along side the road. Shelters are stress full, being homeless is stressful.
We had a dog dumped by our house that must have been dumped, and beaten as he was terrified to the point he would wet the car in it while crying (he had to go to the vet) and hated cars to the point he would attack their tires.
Hope you find him.
i don't know what shelter you go to, but the ones i know, the dogs don't cost $100. jesus.
In what screwed country do you live if you have to PAY to ADOPT a dog? ._.
someone should invent a rope like thing to tie to pets in order to hold on to them.
You got a new dog, put it in an unfamiliar environment and expected it not to stress out. YDI for not prepping your backseat just in case and not having a leash handy.
Generally, you should put any dog you may plan on owning on a leash. Especially one that isn't used to you yet.
The cost associated with adopting animals is what keeps shelters going. They will spay/neuter, vaccinate and microchip the animals before adoption. These things are costly and not covered by the funds they get through donations.
Best thing you can do is crate a newd og. That way you can transport him without worrying about accidents like this. Also the crate will become a safe place for the dog in the future, think of it as his den.
I like how you're more concerned about the $ than about the fact your pet escaped and could get stolen, run over, abused, or euthanised by a pound.
And #34, fees to adopt unwanted animals exist for a very good reason. They discourage people getting animals on a whim without any thought or preparation (obviously didn't work out in this situation) and contribute towards the shelter's running costs. A rescue centre doesn't have a magical refilling wallet, they rely on donations and adoption fees to pay for water, electricity, gas, standard food, specialist diets, vet fees, wages for staff, veterinary meds, handling equipment, cages, bedding, kennels, hazardous waste disposal, office equipment, transport costs for homechecks... you know. Stuff that costs money.
@33/34: Every shelter I've been to makes you pay to adopt a pet. The fees go toward shots as well as spaying/neutering (and as some people mentioned, many shelters now insert a locator chip).
(edit: sorry about the repeat comment, others beat me to it)
next time buy a puppy because obviously you aren't a dog person and you need them to grow to love you!
Next time, use a leash. That's what they're there for. Sorry, but YDI.
Um, I'm with everyone else, use a leash... You may have wanted to walk him before the car ride and, if he isn't use to the car, you might want to try transporting him in a crate - assuming you find him - until he gets used to the it.
LMAO talk about a double edged sword
ouch.
maybe you should go look for the dog instead of posting about it on FML.
a little training could go a long way
Didn't the shelter give you a leash? I just don't get what you were thinking not having the dog on the leash and making sure s/he'd stay in the car.
Reminds me of the dogs (or should I say 'dags') in the movie "Snatch". Bet this one returned to the shelter with your wallet of some shit.
Try the following: Spend some time with the dog at the shelter to get it happy with you (not just pick something you think would be fun). Dog's don't ride in cars as a rule - they need good airflow, and reassurance if they are fretting in anyway. Leash. Treats. Offering something better than they've had in a shelter helps, so it will take some time to gani it's trust.
Do you know what a Leash is?
Next time think before doing all that.

You should've put towels down in your backseat, and had the dog on a leash...
Haha FYL. At least he didnt pee. Also #52 is wrong, cats FTL.
"Dog's don't ride in cars as a rule - they need good airflow, and reassurance if they are fretting in anyway."
Why wouldn't a dog ride in a car? How are you supposed to get them from Point A to Point B?? If you say "car ride" in my house my dogs go wiggle-crazy with joy because they love the car.
Anyway to the OP. Invest in a leash, collar, tags, a crate and some treats. Also at PETCO/PETSMART you can get a velcro vinyl cover to go over seats or the back of your car that will protect the upholstery. I use one for when I take my dogs to the beach to keep the sand and salt water off the leather.

Sounds like you shouldn't own a dog if you weren't prepared for what happened. Of course the dog would poop in your car, he was probably terrified! of you and the car! And a leash would have been smart, especially since the dog probably wasn't trained. I hope you at least tried to look for him.
#47 great reference!
"Good dags. D'ya like dags?"
"Dags?"
"What?"
"Yeah, dags."
"Oh, DOGS. Sure, I like dags."
#55 I think what #48 meant was that riding in cars is not a natural habit for dogs unless they have been raised doing so. Which is very true.
um..why wasn't he on a leash?
I had a dog i got, it ruined everything in my house, i took it for a ride one day, it got diarrhea in my passenger AND driver seat when i got out to run in to the convenience store, decided to then step in it and run around the entire interior of my car, and when i went to get napkins to clean it up, i spilled hot chocolate all over my car on top of the poop. then a few weeks later, my roommates just "gave it away" because they couldn't handle the destruction anymore.
From what I remember, leashing is required by the shelters before you can take the dog from the shelter.
LEASH!! Hopefully someone will find him and adopt him or take him back to the shelter before he gets hit by a car. You should have been more careful.
You deserved that, idiot. They invented leashes for a reason, you know. How stupid are you?
Jet
YDI dumb ass thats what leashes are for
hahahahahaha
you couldnt buy a leash wen you paid for the dog???
17: WTF? If the OP got the dog from a shelter, that means he has a bad past-u can't blame him for that.
OP: why are u on fmylife.com saying this when u should be out there looking for YOUR dog? If this is how ur gonna be with animals, u shouldn't have 1.
Every shelter I've ever been to has sold leashes. YDI for either not getting one or not being able to handle using it. FYL though, also.
Ew for the poop, and YDI it because it's called a leash. Use one. And a lot of animals urinate or defecate when they're scared. They also throw up. It's probably been abused and perhaps only been in a car when taken to the shelter. Seriously, if you don't know anymore about animals than you apparently do, don't have one. And I agree with #68

And #14, I'm a dog walker and have been for a couple of years and I've never had a dog overpower me. If the leash slips, I grab it back before the dog can get away. You must have sucked at your job, and that's why you used to be one.
#71 - On 05/20/2009 at 4:12pm by coffeennicotine
Dude. That's why you have something called a LEASH. I hoped you chased after that dog.
He's probably better off with somebody else... there's this thing called a leash.
Run, Forest, Run! I sure hope you ran after that dog. But, seriously, come on. This is why people made leashes, my dear friend. Leashes!
ever heard of this amazing inventioned called a leash or a crate?
could've used any rope...
Awww, this makes me a little mad. the dog should have been on a leash, and even if it did get away you should be searching for it not writing about it on some website!
that sucks... i agree with 79 look for it
poor doggy i hope it's okay out there by itself :(
You deserved it. You ever heard of a leash?
Devil dog.
#83 - On 05/20/2009 at 8:54pm by Moontrance
awwwww i feel really bad for you and the dog because you are now dogless and 100$less and the dog doesnt have a home!!!!!!!!!! :(
You fail at pet ownership. YDI.
#85 - On 05/20/2009 at 10:15pm by FerreThoughts
No wonder why he was in the shelter...
#70, actually I was a great dogwalker, and when I worked I saw many people overpowered by their dogs. If this person just got this dog, it is understandable that they could be overpowered.
Get over yourself, ass.
Er, ever heard of a collar and leash?
Fuck that stupid dog, and FYL. :(
learn how to hold on to your dog!! this why you have their leash on BEFORE you open the car door! rookie!
aw! well it's nice that you were adopting and that you were ok with it misbehaving since it's new and it's yours now... until he ran off...
It's called a leash dumb ass, use it! YDI
I agree with #1. That last sentence cracks me up.
So.. you open the door... for the dog...who is not wearing a leash...from a shelter...in a new enviroment.....
...
yeah anyone seeing a pattern here..?
For some reason the words "because he was my dog" made me smile :)
#96 - On 05/22/2009 at 6:10am by Yulia
#35's on the money.
That's a million dollar idea.
YDI for not being careful when getting the dog out the car to your home.
Did you try looking for the dog rather than whining to a bunch of strangers?
Idk if I would have missed the thing much after that, not saying I have anything against dogs, just at that point, I wouldn't have cared if the dog was gone. If anything I would have been extremely pissed off as soon as the pooping started... $100 for a dog?, That's less than 2 new video games, that would be normally worth it...
Better luck next time XD
Why wasn't he on a leash? Seriously, be a responsible pet owner next time. I hope you don't get a dog again if this is how you act.
well now he can shit ON/UNDER cars now!!!
i know i'm probably like, the 100th person to say this but, um...theres this invention called a leash. you attach one end to your dog's collar and hold the other end in your hand, it's meant to prevent mishaps such as this. but that dog probably wouldn't have lasted long anyway if you're really that unprepared.
