Text messaging in the US sucks hard. At least in the UK it wouldn't have cost you anything. Sorry man!
#1 - On 02/10/2009 at 5:34am by SayNo
The comic should have ended at the first one.. It got lame after that >.>;
it only sucks without a plan, ive got unlimited texting, doesnt cost a cent
Why would you reply to the first comment with something completely irrelevant? Just so you could have your name where everyone can see it? You aren't that special.

@#91 - wow... perfect example of the whole pot/kettle thing, eh
I think the comic is actually quite good. I remember a similar FML situation where because of a few cents of outstanding charge, the FMLer had to pay around $250.
@97: That's really not a pot/kettle thing since what he had to say had something to do with the comment he was replying to.
What is that creature even supposed to be?
#108 - On 08/01/2009 at 1:13pm by IRemainNameless
@90: "it only sucks without a plan, ive got unlimited texting, doesnt cost a cent" I'll let you think about that for a second now...
...Okay, since I still don't trust you figured it out, you still have to pay for that plan, so it does, in fact, cost you many cents.
And yeah, I thought that was just the artist's style of humans, but there is a very normal-looking human in the last frame...
If you have a messaging plan with unlimited texts, it does not, in fact, cost you anything more than you would already be paying. Therefore, #90 was correct in saying that it won´t cost him any more to send and receive 3,000 texts in a month than 1 text in a month.
Canada's pretty good as far as I know? I pay like, 10$ extra a month and get unlimited texting.
Too many negative votes, comment buried. Show the comment.
The comic was shit- and anyway you cannot do a decent comic for an FML that short. I'm sorry, but it really kills me that all these people have such amazing art, and yet such crappy ideas.
I wish I could draw well, because my ideas are fairly good but my drawing stinks
uhm I think what he meant when correcting the "with an unlimited plan it doesn't cost a cent" comment was that it does in fact cost you extra because you have to pay for more than a basic plan. Where as the original commenter was saying that in the UK you don't have to buy an unlimited plan, it comes with the basic one...
@116: #90 did not say "doesn't cost a cent MORE," they only said "doesn't cost a cent," when it does, in fact, cost many cents.
yeah i agree
wtf is the thing in the comic anyways?
like a retarded bear?
#97, THIS.
#141 - On 08/02/2009 at 2:17am by lynnesey
I don't understand the comic. o.O
its a bear its from an actual online comic the artist does its pretty funny the other comic i mean but yeah just a bear.
Actually it does...you pay for the unlimited texting.
I totally agree with you, in regards to the actual comic! I mean the comic itself was good but when I got to the actual FML it was a let down to discover all the events in the comic hadn't actually happened. I guess this is what you call artistic license?
The creature is actually a HAMSTER. http://www.calamitiesofnature.com/about/ Harold the Hamster to be exact. I read the comic regularly. It's pretty good. The characters are all different animals.
it does suck. i finally got unlimited texting a few months ago and now i text all the time...i still have to pay every month for it but it is better
you pay extra already for the plan dumbass. if you didn't order the unlimited text plan, your bill would be cheaper. therefore you are paying for them.
The comic was created, so that if you could understand it, your head would explode.
you pay for it weather you realize it or not
& i had a i similar feeling # 169, when i read the comic i like "LAME...BORING...SNOOZER" but when i scrolled down to read the actual FML i was like ROFLCOPTER! it was short simple & to the point...oh & also very funny! hilarious!

"And yeah, I thought that was just the artist's style of humans, but there is a very normal-looking human in the last frame..."
I made an account just so i can say this: your comment made me laugh harder than most fmls on this site. Lol.
That is so awful... but really hilarious. Definitely something that would have happened to me. I don't have a text messaging plan either, and yet people text me alllllll the time. I usually have to pay $5-10 extra a month for stuff I can't control.
#2 - On 02/10/2009 at 5:47am by Amkii
Call customer care and tell them to put a texting block on your phone. That's the only way to stop it. You can't get a credit for the amount you pay every month since it is a recurring charge, and you are aware of it. Text opt out doesn't cost you anything. (I work for AT&T's customer care so that's how I know.)
If u dont open the text msg u r not charged for it, at least with my company. but if ur texting anyway its better to just get unlimited text and pay $10 extra a month. rather than accidently texting too much and ending up with an outstanding bill cuz of texting
You PAY to RECEIVE SMS ????? What the fuck ?
#3 - On 02/10/2009 at 6:21am by WhatTheFuck
Yes, you are charged for every text message you send and recieve. It doesn't matter if you have a texting plan or not. If you get a text message from somebody saying 'k', you are charged the going rate for texting. Which in OP's case...was .25.
wrong. I have a plan and I pay one flat rate for unlimited texts.
but you're still paying, which is what the other person was saying. even with a plan you are paying for the texts.
wrong, many companies give you free incoming text's, they just charge for outgoing.
true. the only cell phone service provider i know that does that is Unicel. :P
US charges for both incoming and outgoing, and charge a bitch if you go over (or if you don't have a plan). I didn't realize it got so bad that it was $0.25 a text now (thank god I decided to get a plan).
Most people in other countries (I mean outside of the US) I believe don't even bother with texting plans because 1)They don't do it that much and 2) It's cheap anyways.
#191 - On 08/04/2009 at 10:52pm by chanman
Well that's very wrong. The UK are bigger texters than than the US and no-one pays for incoming texts. Sounds a bit unfair to charge you for things that you might not necessarily want. Without a plan, texts cost about 10p to send.
There are thousands of different plans in the UK but, for example, I pay £15 per month and get 300 minutes and unlimited (outgoing) texts.
@ Amkii:
Then why do you keep paying for it? You're the one that is supporting that system. Unless you really start caring (and doing something about it), nothing is gonna change.

this is freaking halarious
#5 - On 02/10/2009 at 8:22am by B.
If that's not BS and is real, I'm sorry man, that really sucks.
sue your boss : you do not have to pay to get fired, maybe except in China.
#7 - On 02/10/2009 at 8:56am by eldrakan
Go into work and make him say it to your face. If he goes through with it, knock something down when you leave.
#8 - On 02/10/2009 at 9:35am by Feelin\'Po
Go into work and pretend like you never got the text message. If he asks about it just play dumb. Then, if he actually fires you, burn the building down
Write your former employer an invoice for $0.25.
When the accounting department receives it, they'll have to figure out whether to pay it. They will ask various people what it's about, generating discussion around the office. Your former boss may very well have to get a signature from his boss or some other higher-up person in order to have the invoice paid. Which means HIS boss will ask him why the hell he fired someone via text message.
#10 - On 02/10/2009 at 9:55am by adrianmonk
That is an awesome idea!! I'll have to remember that just incase that ever actually happens to me lol.

#12 - On 02/10/2009 at 1:33pm by Samantha
it doesnt work like that, for verizon at least. i have a contract phone and even when i sont open a text it counts to my message allownace
Send them the invoice for 25¢.
It will probably get your boss in trouble for stupid, unethical behavior.
If they don't pay it, you can always send a letter of demand saying that they will be responsible for all of your legal fees if you have to collect the amount. :-0
#13 - On 02/10/2009 at 1:46pm by David
sucks dude! i feel for you though. i once got dumped via SMS :-(
#14 - On 02/10/2009 at 2:15pm by pm
Check with a lawyer and explain to him the situation (be honest.) He will tell you whether or not there is an actual case for it but I think it might be just completely unethical but not deserving of a civil case.
If not, then send an invoice to your workplace for the $0.25 back. It will just make your boss look petty and unethical. Plus, your workplace will find out about how your boss fired you.
#15 - On 02/10/2009 at 3:52pm by McLawyerMan
While the invoice is a good idea, I'm not so sure the lawyer part would work. Some pretty basic part of the Constitution states you can't sue for some amount under $20, but that might just have to do with property or something. The intricacies of law are an enigma...
asking a lawyer and making a case of it is gonna cost a hell of a lot more than 25 cents.
invoice for 25 cents and the amount of money it'll take you to send that invoice
;I unless you're doing it by email...
#16 - On 02/10/2009 at 4:02pm by jen
"next time you fire me, do it on NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS BIATCH!"....thats what your response text should've been, but it would've cost you another $0.25... :-\

I had a boss that had someone else call and fire me. He didn't do it himself. He never spoke to me himself and told me I was fired. At least your boss had the decency to send his own message.
#22 - On 02/10/2009 at 6:44pm by h8myoldboss
Yeah, I once found out I was fired from a co-worker. I called to ask her when I worked next and she goes "Didn't you get fired?" Apparently everyone knew before me. I was not too pleased.
Fired via text..a co-worker probably spoofed the text, and now you're fired for not showing up to work. Go into work and verify the situation, but I doubt this is even true.

#28 - On 02/11/2009 at 11:37am by Andy
I agree sending your boss a bill for not only the text message, but your time as well. I also do not think that you can be fired via text. I am pretty sure since you do not have a text messaging plan you could still come in to work and receive that last extra day of pay, since you "never got the message".
#29 - On 02/11/2009 at 5:18pm by CP
Go back and negotiate a severance. Don't forget to ask for the .25!
I'm fairly certain that you cannot be fired via text - unless it's an "under the table" kind of job. you must be given verbal or written notice. I would go in and demand written notice -- and of course, your .25.
I LOL'D SO FREAKIN HARD
#34 - On 02/16/2009 at 12:46am by tomatosoup
It sucks that you not only got fired but had to pay for it to;although I've never laughed so hard in my life.
#35 - On 02/17/2009 at 10:30am by Vivian
Ohhh man that does, indeed, suck. So sorry.
LMAO
But yeah, regardless of whether or not you had a texting plan, it was really unprofessional of him to fire over SMS.
#38 - On 02/19/2009 at 3:48am by hc
The same thing happened to me at the beginning of the year! My boss was always an immature bitch, so I didn't expect something more from her.
#39 - On 02/20/2009 at 12:02am by same
That just shows that she cannot face you like a real person and do the right thing. It will come back to her.
#40 - On 02/20/2009 at 2:26am by GiFtEdOnE
how do you know its a she?
You should take a quarter, sharpen it to a point, put it on a crossbow, and shoot him through the heart...just a suggestion...
Then he'd owe you 50 cents :D
text him back telling him he owes you $1.00 for text fees.
hmm.. from what you wrote, i'm guessing the text message looked something like this:
"you're fired lol. k byee"
#43 - On 02/22/2009 at 4:35pm by veebz
It is illegal to be fired via text.
#45 - On 02/24/2009 at 8:00pm by Ichi
First, go into work and continue working as if nothing ever happened.
If your boss is THAT non-confrontational, he may not say anything
at all and you'll be able to continue working there for a while longer
and continue receiving a paycheck while you look for a job somewhere else.
Then, if/when he does say something about the text message, be like
"Wait, so you're saying you sent me a TEXT MESSAGE to fire me???"
And make him feel like an idiot. Later, after officially being fired in person
or w/e, say you finally got the text and bill him for the $0.25. Like everyone
else said, make sure the bill circulates the office so he becomes a laughing stock.
#46 - On 02/25/2009 at 4:33pm by fire
how can anyone say he deserved that? and btdubbs thats bullshit
dude its just 25 cents
#48 - On 02/28/2009 at 5:35pm by clam
I pay for text messages too and it's annoying to get a text message when you have ot pay for it?
#49 - On 02/28/2009 at 7:29pm by VR
He should have fired you to your face, not in a text. If this is true, he's a coward.
SMS uses the same channel that your phone uses to send phone numbers when dialing. It quite literally costs nothing for your network to send you a text message.
Mobile phones in America are such a scam!
Hey #48! $0.25 may not mean much to you, but when your at a vending machine and the dollar slot is jammed, don't come crying to me.
#52 - On 03/07/2009 at 9:26pm by pwot
um... losing .25 cents is not a big deal... including it just made you look kinda pathetic...
getting fired by text, though... sucks. but you're better off not working for someone who has no guts because that most likely means he/she won't do well in a tough situation involving the business.
btw, lol @ #10. DO IT.
Haha I almost cried @ #52. So damn funny!
#10 gave you the best advice.
HA damn
and btw you always pay for recieving SMS you have to the companies make it like that for money
#52 LOL
#57 - On 03/18/2009 at 1:24am by wxd
I would ask for .25 cents plus interest for the time you waited and the fact that you could have invested it into something else.
Harsh!
Still can't believe you have to pay to receive texts in the US. Stupidest system ever.
he sounds pretty damn professional
Double Pun, I'd steal all the shit out of the office to make up for it!
12- you still have to. i tried that and it didnt work.
10- great idea
ok people r going cray over 25 freaken cents
n really u deserved it
He/She said fired not layed off
so there must have been a reason u got fired
Regardless, it's unprofessional, no reason was given for it (apparently), and even if it was only 25 cents, he was still charged to get fired.
hahhaa, damn. pretend like it never happened!
hahaha, that job would have helped you get a better plan too
work at mc d's
You don't have a text messaging plan?
O_O
#67 - On 04/09/2009 at 10:50pm by mrsandmrporter
that is exactly like the one where the girl went to mexico and her bf broke up with her via text message and what boss texts you to tell you your fired?
are you canadian
then it would make sense
its not much money but still LOLS
WTF that is so unprofessional. Your boss sucks.
Damn that sucks what kind of boss is that. He/she needs to learn how to be more profesional and grow a pair to say it in person.
#72 - On 05/21/2009 at 1:14am by trapiadora
That is unprofessional. Haha but man that is hilarious lol. Poor you.
It's better Than paying $50
lol
are you more pissed about the 25 cents then actually getting fired lol :P
Ugh. Text messages cost the service providers virtually NOTHING. $0.25 is ridiculous.
Yeah. It's ridiculous that texts aren't free. My boyfriend and I each have to have a $5 a month text plan just so we can occasionally use text messaging (we're on a family plan, and if I send him a message, it gets counted twice)
The illustration took the joke, nailed it to a dead horse, and beat it.
This. Terribly drawn, too. MAking a "unique and fresh style!" doesn't give you an excuse to draw badly. It took me two minutes to locate the mouth. That shouldn't happen.
That was LOL-worthy, #78, haha. Agreed.
#87 - On 08/01/2009 at 9:25am by _Mish
Really? Two minutes to find a mouth that's quite clearly represented, exactly where a mouth would be?
Okay.
Can't say I enjoyed this one much. It's like the FML where the guy got decapitated by a meteor... Wayyyyy overboard..
Still better than the one with the meteor decapitation, at least this one is stuck to the main concept of the FML.
#80 - On 08/01/2009 at 8:31am by MyLifeS_
What the fuck is your problem?
It's 25%, get over it
#89 - On 08/01/2009 at 9:42am by scateice
It's actually 25 cents, not 25 percent. I hope you don't work with numbers. If you do, expect to receive your pink slip via text you awful little bitch.
I'm so sick of illustrations essentially making up their own FMLs. FMLs are funny because they actually happened to someone, and we can laugh at their misfortune. Making up a worst-case-scenario story is just NOT FUNNY. For example, would you accept this FML?
"Today, while walking to work, I simultaneously dropped my wallet and spilled my drink all down the front of my shirt. A dog took my wallet before I could pick it up. Then something fell out of the sky and knocked me out. I woke up in the hospital, where I was given the news that I was now homeless due to my house having been repossessed because I had defaulted on a loan that I didn't even know about. I got so upset that I puked, and then the puke turned into a monster and tried to eat me! Worst of all, two minutes later, the entire hospital exploded! FML"
Well, this is pretty much what every illustration does. Way to kill the joke. Do it right or don't do it at all!
agreed, and wtf? they drew a bear?
I really don't understand how you can think that it's fun to read a comic that follows the exact same FML you read months ago to every single detail? How can you honestly claim that the comics aren't funnier when they actually use their imagination (even to the point of making the second half a whole new, funny story like the SMBC one)?
You must live a very boring life.
Stop whining.
Exactly #96 but a lots of FML's members can't understand such an obvious thing.
It's because the new story isn't funny. If someone were able to think up a new, FUNNY, story, that would be different. But these stories suck.
However, I see the FML staff disagrees with me, so I'll STFU :)
I agree..the illustrations that randomly make up things are annoying. Now the one last week was funny. But most of them..eh
I totally agree with you, 94. ...I was gonna write more but I got distracted, watched a movie, and came back to realize I hadn't posted this yet. :P
Ok, yes they take a little creative freedom, that shouldn't be something to bitch and whine about! Oh, and a comic where it is word for word what the FML said, you same people are complaining about how boring it is! Make up your minds!!
I for one like the comic, except the bear thing should be a person...
If you can think that it's fun to read a comic that follows the exact same FML, the illustrations are'nt for you, you can close this page. We want to add something new, we want artists with imagination. We want some surprise in the drawning, that's the funny and interessant thing here.
Not all of the comics have been that way. The older ones were pretty accurately true to the FMLs, were they not funny?
none of the comics are funny. i'm not saying they should be exactly like the original FML but i still want to laugh.
This comic went overboard, not as much as the meteor one, but still too much. And is it supposed to be a person or a dog?
A human with a horrible deformity. You can tell because of the severe Cyclopsitis and the ears that are now conveniently placed on its head.
I feel bad for you if 25cents made you lose your house
Gosh that must suck. To look like a dog.
Whoever made this comic is retarded. It's not funny and why would you change someone to a dog? Wtf is your problem.
Why would Matt Groening turn his characters into yellow ones? Do you think Matt has a problem? It doesn't matter if a dog can't talk or if someone has yellow skin, the most important thing is what the illustration is about ;)
exactly, so why does the illustration suck? x.x
people complain when the comic is drawn exactly according to the fml, and people complain when the artist decides to spruce up the illustrated fml a bit. what DO you guys want, exactly? go draw your own comic if these comics bother you so much.
Absolutely unfair that we have to pay for incoming text messages. And text messaging costs way too fucking much. Everyone already knows that the bandwidth used for texting is a fraction of a fraction of the cost. In some countries, it costs ONE CENT per text. There is no excuse for texts to be this expensive.
That aside, this is a pretty good editorial comic.
Personally, I like the illustration. People complain about anything and everything, I swear.
I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes the comments section makes me want to stab my eyes out with my car key ;-)
#157 - On 08/02/2009 at 9:20am by Alan (FML Staff)
Haha I like the last bit of the comic with the guy assuming he's lazy.
I doubt the OP commissioned Tony Piro to draw this comic.
Listen, staff member. You make these to please us. And obviously we don't like it!!
Actually we do this to please Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, so we'll continue until we get some feedback from her. :)
Dearest Gotmilk;
I appreciate your concern in pleasing my faculties with these lovely illustrations. However, I simply must agree with scince220 in this respect.
I hope you do not take offense at this comment; I am merely trying to improve your understanding of my opinion on the matter.
With sincerest apologies,
Queen Victoria, UK
Best. Comment. Evaaaaaaaaaarrrrr.
That made me LOL, cheers ;-)

HOLY CRAP!!!
The Queen agreed with me!
Okay... LOL , mod your funnier than the comic itself :P
The comic took it too far. It's funny, but not as a representation of THIS story.
The illustration took the FML to a whole new level! Awesome!
#150 - On 08/02/2009 at 4:16am by danineteen
I'm such a ray of sunshine, love me, love me.
Aha. Funny, can you change my comment back to the original FML Staff? Kthnxbi.
This illustration is stupid. It's great when the comic takes a little artistic licence, and adds something extra. But there's a limit to just how much one can stretch the FML until it enters the realm of ridiculous and unfunny.
I dub this 'Fail'.
I have to say.. The cartoon is awesome! xD
I don't get why he's a bear though
i was just about to post that before i read that u already had. i didn't even notice he was a bear until a person walked past him in the last panel...
I couldn't laugh... sorry...
But yeah, my plan includes unlimited texting... ahaha so I've "prepaid" for all my texts :P
i didnt know a comic could both lick my ass and suck my balls at the same time
#171 - On 08/03/2009 at 2:19am by shankzilla
...it looks like a doggy^^. x3
but yea, not funny. i wish i could submit a comic, but i just don't know how to DX
Picture? Haha! Just kidding.
Don't let an immature co-worker get you down. As other people are saying, she might have not been laughing about it being small. Unless she specifically said something about you having a small dick, you don't need to worry. It could have been the fact that it was insanely HUGE or she was just laughing that you spilled it on yourself. Anyway, next time she bends down, look at her boobs and laugh. Being a girl myself, I know that would hurt a lot of my friends. Again, don't worry about it. :)
I had no idea bears could talk.
That's what they said to Walt Disney... look at how he failed big time. What a loser that guy was!

Why must all of these illustrated FMLs take it so far that they become unfunny? :/
Wow.
You people need to learn to stop whining. You weren't forced to come look at this comic, if you don't like it why not go look at something else?
I liked the comic. :)
Personally, I read the comics to groan at how bad they are. Its kinda like a car accident. Not funny but you can't help but stare at it. But on this comic itself. I thought they took it too far. It was funny but about half way there I got annoyed with the running gag.
Also OP, just do the invoice thing and send it to the accounting office with a transcript of the text. (Props if you can download them to your computer.) Not only does this bring light to the less than ethical aspect of it, you get your $.25 back.
why do these always have NOTHING to do with the actual FML?
coz its funnier when they add stuff

I don't see why the commenters up there are bashing the artist. I understand you can "voice your opinion", but really. Is it actually NECESSARY to tell the artist that he's doing "too much"? I mean, look at this. Sure maybe some of you thought that he took the idea of the FML a bit too far and added some creativity and liveliness to it. But hey, it is ART. Art doesn't really have any restrictions. Do you think artists of surrealism create something, look at it a second time, then throw it away because it could "never happen"? The artist here is just taking a dish and adding flavor to compliment it. There is nothing wrong with that. The fact that people would just argue over something like that is unbelievable.
I thought it was a dog too!
This was a good FML because it was short and to the point. This was a bad comic because it didn't follow the FML's example.
#200. this isn't art! it's some person trying to make the fact that they are paying a quarter to their cell phone company humorous. and yes it is necessary to tell this so-called "artist" that he went too far! this "artist" is trying to make it seem like it DID happen! that's why he put it on FML!!!! i mean i could post something that didn't happen. would that make me an artist that "added some creativity and liveliness"? no, i would be lying!
Yeah I get what you're trying to say, but even in image form, that would be plagiarizing.
All the artist is doing is basing a comic idea off an FML submission. All the artists in FML illustrations have done it.
why does the homeless man look like a teddy gram and the other one looks normal?
Wow... in Australia, it doesn't matter what sort of plan you have - if someone texts you, THEY pay for it, not you!
LOL. I'm sorry that sucks, but I was LMAO.
ha txting someone doesnt seem official in any way... countless times i have been textd by someone and it not gone through. just act like you never got it. what can he say? i wonder how long it would have taken your boss to finally decide to tell you to your face. you could have still had your job for weeks maybe?
at a job my old man used to work at when i was little, his boss tried to sent him letters saying he was fired. he just threw them away as if they were junk mail. it went on for months until he later confronted his boss to quit because he found a new job. lol only later did he find out that they were trying to fire him for something that someone else did and due to their negligence to look into it did they accuse him.
FYL for not having free incoming text messages by your provider
i hate this u suck f ur life
WTF, is that supposed to a bear in the comic?

yea uhm...what? sorry if I'm wrong but doesn't the sender pay for the txt message and not the recipient?
There was once a time the recipient paid for a letter... Then they created the stamp system. Sorted.
Now some people pay to receive texts... Not sorted.
how did you get paid 25 cents wouldnt you lose 25 cents???
Called tense. He PAID for the 25 cents. He lost the 25 cents cause he PAID for it. He didn't say "I GOT paid" he said "I paid" Learn your grammar.
why r u bothered about 25 cent??? that's virtually nothing!!!
so are you saying you had to PAY to RECIEVE a text message ?? thats so bogus!
where are you from? in America it costs to receive text messages... yeah it really sucks :( wherever u live im coming there
fail... srry to hear that... seems the prick would have enough moral fiber to call you...
liarrrrrrrr! it is against the law to not be fired in person. duh. you all are stupid. he could sue for that.
oh shit 25 cents down the drain!!! your boss fired you for being a bum. stop complaining over a quarter and go get another job you sack of shit.
