question. were there still TONS of empty seats when you did that? and no need to sit next to a stranger? because honestly I think it is really weird and awkward if there are lots of empty seats and someone comes and sits down right by me. the other day I did actually move when that happened but mostly because it was a test and I wanted to concentrate and not feel crowded by weirdo next to me. the dude in your case didn't have to move, but really, just sitting by someone isn't going to make you friends. in most classes it's hard to make friends. join a club or something
