That sucks, but it raises an interesting ethical question. Presuming that he was already planning to ask her to the Prom when you asked him to distract her, what obligation did he have to you? I don’t think that he had a duty to abandon his plans to ask her to the Prom just because someone else expressed intent to do the same thing. At the same time, if he agreed to act as your agent by distracting her and then betrayed his fiduciary duty to you by asking her, he would have acted unethically. It would have been better for him to say “actually, I was planning on asking her,” and then work with you to come up with a fair way to determine who got to ask first (keeping in mind that a third person could swoop in at any time and ask her himself).

I have to agree on wanting clarification about what the friend was told. If it was just to "distract the girl" then I don't think he did anything overly dickish in asking her, as he didn't know that was what you were trying to do.
Believe it or not, sometimes just asking things like that, without going into elaborate schemes and plans, actually works! I recommend you try it sometime -- an overly elaborate plan is almost bound to fail.

I think you might have blown it on this one, he probably liked her too. I don't think he was trying to be a dick or fuck your shit up. He had probably been planning to ask her out too, and when you told him your plan he was thinking something along the lines of, "Oh shit, I better ask her out now before I lose my chance." So he did, and she said yes. You should have known he liked her if he was a close friend. Next time don't show your plans to the enemy, and I know he's your friend, but if you are both after the same girl, he is an enemy in that sense.
That sucks. Just go to prom with your friend's mom. Problem solved.

Want to get even? Make sure you take the girl aside, ALONE THIS TIME, and tell her, 'Hey I heard you're going to the prom with Douchebag, but I just wanted you to know how much I liked you. No guilt trip, nothing, just all about her, and you just wanted her to know.
Then you make sure that one of her friends *knows* the story about how your friend fucked you over. If you don't know her friends, tell someone with a really big fucking mouth who will get righteously angry and be sure to tell the girl.
THEN...you talk with the girl again and say, 'Hey...listen, I never meant for that to get out. Soandso found out about it (hell even fake talk on your phone within hearing of her friends! get it out that way) and, I didn't want you to know because I didn't want your prom to be anything less than the perfectly special day it should be for you. Because that's what you deserve. I can't justify what douchebag did, and I could never do that to a friend, but when I look in your eyes...I know why he took that chance.

Here's the lesson you need to learn from this: She might (probably would) have said yes if you just asked her like he did instead of trying to set up some elaborate bullshit. Just ask. If she's interested, she'll say yes. If you have to perform some act to get a girl, it's not worth it.
