It's funny you specifically mention the word "attention," because I find the idea of friends standing at a microphone and giving a speech to their friend on such a minor occasion to be all kinds of pathetic, if not a little pretentious. The use of the word "speech" makes it sound like these were not just shout-outs for the sake of humor or having a good time.

To be fair, OP did say a LITTLE speech. It could have been something really short, sweet, and simple. Besides, it could have been something that OP's friends planned on their own. For all we know, OP could be a fantastic person with friends who think she deserves a little bit of appreciation that she might not get on a daily basis. It never hurts to let someone know that you care about him/her. You're never too young to have someone say, "You're a good friend and we love you. We hope this is a special day for you." Or something along those lines.

I'm 16 and at my party, I had speeches given to me. Am I am spoiled rich brat? No. Not at all.
I had my family AND friends give speeches and you know what it was nice to hear all the things they had to say about me, it's good to know how the ones you love tell you once in a while how much you mean to them. My sweet 16 was a blast too! Because everyone was laughing at the memories my family and friends shared. Are we a TV family? Def not. That's why that birthday so so special to me, everyone made an attempt to not make it about themselves, but about me :)
