Today, the 4-year-old I was babysitting came up to me all happy, saying she went to the bathroom like a "big girl". Knowing she was just potty trained, I asked if she'd remembered to flush. Looking at me confused, she said, "But it's in my room." FML

Maybe she has a potty standing in her room in case it's too urgent for her to get to the bathroom. With freshly trained kids every second can be crucial.

She is four years old. By the time my brother was four he was allowed in his room to play by himself.

My stepchildren (4 and 5) are both able to play in their own rooms without adult supervision. We still check on them every now and then, but they are pretty capable of not killing themselves while playing alone at that age

my niece was allowed to play in her room by herself since she was one. she is 3 and still plays by herself in her room.

Yeah, the thing is, OP is the babysitter. Literally paid (or at least enlisted, perhaps not paid) to keep tabs on the girl. Common sense tells me that OP was a little too far away for too long, but again, kids are little spawns of Satan that will embarrass you at every turn through little fault of your own, so I'm giving the benefit of the doubt.

Unless she has developmental problems, that's a little old to not be potty trained. Where I live, children typically start school at age 3, and they won't accept them if they're not potty trained.

#12 that was my thought too. Many preschools or day cares where I live will accept children who are not potty trained, but usually four is a bit late. Now, I know every child is different, but almost all of the parents I know started training around age two

#12 I was thinking the same, hence why all the people saying, "shouldn't you be watching over her?" are getting thumbs down (or were). One would assume the child just had a dumb idea and it was to shit in her bedroom, because big girls spend a lot of time in there. (make up and stuff)

It's okay, I was a late bloomer when it came to pottying alone. I still knew to go in the little toddler toilet though

My mom runs a daycare and I have 5 nieces and nephews and have been around children my entire life. 4 is definitely way too old to not be properly potty trained. Unless she has developmental issues, as you said, than this is a problem. She definitely should know better and probably does.

You'd be surprised how many people don't start potty training their kids until they're three or older. I used to teach preschool, and I didn't have any two year olds that would potty reliably. Most of them hadn't even started learning yet.
