Actually you are right. In my state a few years ago, there was a case where a 15 year old boy was receiving oral sex from a 13 year old girl in the back of a station wagon at a bowling alley. They charged the boy with statutory rape of the 13 year old and the 13 year old was charged with taking indecent liberties with a minor. Yes Alamance County, NC is a screwed up county but it is illegal any age.

I hate to say this but kids are not innocent... I first had sex at 16 and i was one of the last ones out of my hs at that age. My best bet is not to be too harsh on her bc if she is tellin you than that means you have a good relationship with her and you do not want that to end. Also, give her advice, put her on birthcontrol and make sure she is well aware of the consequences. A lot of people worry about getting pregnant but no, worst case scenario is catching an STD. And at her age, I'm sure she thinks that something like that could never happen to her. So my advice, birthcontrol and condoms!!!!

Our "adult" society is phobic of sex. I graduated from public high school without EVER once being "taught" in a sex-ed class what the female reproductive organs actually ever looked like. Schools teach abstinence up the ass and FAIL horribly at teaching ANYTHING about sex, so kids turn to other, more extreme resources.
It's a good thing you're daughter told you, talk to her about it reasonably... and try not to pull authoritative power trips. They don't work outside of concentration camps and military academies and end up making the thing forbidden more attractive.

I hope you told her that you made a mistake by thinking that she was mature enough to make good decisions and that in order to make up for it, you'll make sure that she gets plenty of supervision and extra help. There is nothing wrong with doing something that makes you and others feel good. Yes, I do think that 13 is a bit young, but if she's mature enough to be able to a) tell her mother, b) not get pregnant, and c) not get any STDs, then she's probably mature enough to consent to sex. I do think that you, as a parent, should talk to her more and find out what she's doing, making sure she's able to consent, etc, and understands that it's a bit of a big deal, but seriously.

I personally think that even if the mother did teach her about sex while she was younger the daughter would have done it regardless. Kids do what they want these days. Even if the mother hadn't taught her about sex it was probably because she never thought that her daughter would even consider it until an older age. Most parents are in denial about what their kids really do, and just expect the best from them. Movies, TV shows, and even books express how it's okay to have sex. Where I live sex education is started at a very young age. I argee with 176. This is a good opportunity to teacher your daughter how to be responsible before something will happen. Teaching about condoms and safe sex isn't encouraging it, but it's encouraging responsibility. I think that 13 is too young, but I also have had friends that were about the same age when they became sexually active. As long as she's being safe, there's not much else you can do about it. Preaching abstinence to someone that obviously wants to have sex is not going to stop her from doing it.

She's not a bad parent! My sisters and brothers and I had wonderful parents. But as a teenager myself, I can tell you right now that no matter what our parents tell us, and no matter the fact that we know right from wrong, we're going to do what we want to do.
My older sister was pregnant at 15. And it wasn't bad parenting; it was a night of partying - that she knew she shouldn't have been doing, but did anyway - a night of sex with her boyfriend - that she knew she shouldn't have been doing, but did anyway - and then a pregnancy, which she decided to keep, despite her boyfriend's rejection to it. And when she was pregnant, and had the baby? It was our parents and our family that was there for her every step of the way.
So I think you all need to get off your high freakin' pedistals, and off your high horses, and realize that you can't control your kids anymore then you can control the weather. All you can have is the best of intentions and pray that you got through to them somehow.

There are many things to be said here. This doesn't make her a good or bad parent, it just points out a lack of informative parenting in that particular area, something that can happen very easily depending on how the parent was brought up. Next, kids will always look up to older popular role models and with the growing availability of promiscuous role models it becomes easier to accept sex younger (not saying in any that sex or promiscuity are bad, to each their own, but a 13 year old seems way too young to be taking examples from Gossip Girl).
With the approval of friends (as close as family usually) sex at that age could seem perfectly normal to a kid. All the biological factors kick in big time between 9 and 13 as well. Start talking to kids about sex AS IF THEY WERE ADULTS before they hit the double digits so they can skip a ton of easily avoidable consequences or they WILL go out and figure it out on their own.
Religious families are no exception, whatever your beliefs, simply telling a person not to do something or not talk about something "because it's wrong" doesn't work. Arm your kids with all the information possible, it's the best way to help them make good decisions in this area.
Ignorance only begets more ignorance, especially when it comes to sex. If you're not informed enough to properly teach your kid about sex, get educated, you're the adult remember? Turn off the parental filter and hit the internet for some information. It may be uncomfortable for you, especially talking to your kid about it, but you'll be grateful when your kid doesn't astonish you by knowing what a Filthy Sanchez or a rim job are when you go to talk about the birds and bees the first time you find out they have a boy/girlfriend.

It sucks that this happened, but MAKE IT BETTER. Do all you need in order to instill better morals in her and make her aware of the dangers of having sex. I'm sure she'll do it in high school behind your back like almost every high school girl, but at 13? You REALLY need to get your parenting together and make sure she at least understands. Everyone who's called this person a failed parent should consider the fact that even with the most involved parents, a kid will find a way to have sex.
My cousin lost her virginity when we were 12 at the high school's football game. Her parents were there, and she just asked if she could go for a walk with me because we were tired of sitting so long. What parent would think anything of that, especially in a small community?
I know very, very few girls my age [I'm 16] who were much over 15 if at all before they lost their virginity. It's part of the way society is evolving. I'm certainly not saying it's a good thing, but it's something people need to learn to accept.
The parents aren't the ones to blame. Abstinence only sex education is the major problem here. Kids are having sex presented to them as a taboo subject; something they shouldn't talk about.
It's ridiculous. Some of you need to grow the fuck up and realize that kids will be kids and will do things behind their parents' backs no matter what the parent does.

Please talk to your daughter. It's better to arm your daughter with knowledge on the subject than to let her friends, the media, her bf, or even life experience teach her. AIDS, herpes, and "where babies come from" aren't things that should be learned via life experience? Teach her about how you feel about sex and her having it.
Who knows your kid might be obedient and heed what you say. Kids tend to cling to things their parents think are important. Idk, maybe kids like that are myths. It wouldn't hurt to find out.

My mother never even allowed me to go on DATES with guys until I was 15, and more over there was always a very mutual understanding that sex is a big deal and should be something you wait for until you're in love with someone.

I was thirteen two years ago, and i knew girls that lost their virginity in the sixth grade. that's like 12. or even 11. sex and crap is becoming all too common in middle school. and high school. i think its all wrong and disturbing. but whatever. maybe your daughter just wanted to follow the crowd. or do what she saw on TV. The media portrays us badly, 13-14 are actually pretty mature and intelligent in most cases,and we aren't quite as innocent as thought (sex ed was going over already learned information) So this is rather normal to my experience, it may be illegal, but this does happen, times change i suppose....

Ahahaha. To 512, I'm nearly as young as you and even I realize how ignorant and naive our agegroup is. Your relatives might call you mature for your age and you might be smart, but these things really don't do much to counteract hormones and the teenage version of common sense. As far as innocence goes, I'm pretty sure everybody is caught up on the fact that sex ed is a review for 13 year olds. And finally, yes, times have changed, but only in the sense that girls are no longer expected to give birth nine months after they reach puberty.
