Won't somebody think of the landlords?!

Today, I looked for an affordable home. I'm on SSI but only on a bare minimum (less than $950 a month), but I'm by myself so I thought it wouldn't be a big deal. All the homes in my area are over $1k. When I tried to look for one with less beds and baths, they demanded I make an account before I could search further. FML

you literally cannot afford rent anywhere in the US on 950 a month assuming you can even pay 100% of your disability to rent (you can't) and most places won't sign you a lease unless you can prove you make 3-4x rent a month. disability in America is a disgrace. your best bet is finding some roommates you don't hate.

just apply for section 8! depending on where you live . if you put your on disability and homeless you’ll get it within a year! it’s worth a try sometimes you just need alittle help and that’s okay!!!

Section 8 is heavily limited on funding and vouchers. Where I live, the wait is over 5 years, and the only places that will take it is infested with bed bugs, roaches, druggies and sex offenders, it’s a nightmare. I have not been unfortunate to have to rely on section 8, but know people who do, and sometimes between living on the streets, vs section 8, it’s a hard time choosing section 8 considering what it’s become in our area. And that’s saying something when our mayor has pretty much criminalized being homeless. I would avoid section 8 at all costs and just attempt to cohabitate with others for a decent place.

you can't even rent a room for $1000 where I am on the east coast
