Today, my dad came home from work complaining about all the people he'd seen. He said he doesn't understand why so many people with problems have to confide in him. He's a psychologist. FML

If all his patients are as whiny as you, then I understand his dilemma.

I'm studying to become a clinical psychologist and getting a phd in psychology to work with people who have mental disabilities. psychologist assess people and working through their problems based on their learnt perspectives, intact most psychologists refer patients to psychiatrists to get prescribed meds for their conditions

Seriously? I had to make a log in just to comment on people's stupidity. Psychologist are able to provide individual, family, group etc. clinical treatment (therapy) and administer psychological tests if they have their doctorate (ph.d or psy.d). psychiatrists can provide treatment but have a medical degree not a clinical one unless they are specialized. Therefore they are the only one's who can administer meds. Maybe it's different in other countries but in the states this is how it is. Sounds like he's burned out. it's like hearing teachers say they hate kids.

well maybe he should try a new proffesion

Poor dad, that must get to him after a while.

Well, think about this. He has to listen to depressing stories ALL DAY LONG. I mean, he's bound to be saddened by these tribulations. It's been heard of the psychiatrists visit other therapists because of the depression they develop from other patients stories. Imagine watching heartbreaking movies, or listening to depressing musix all day long. There ya go. I wanted to be a psychologist also, but I have depression problems of my own. I don't know if I could handle other's problems if I can't even handle my own. And while what your dad said is a little off color, just be understanding. He has to be understanding all day long, it can be depressing.
