Today, I was going to record a song I wrote for my dad, who I haven't spoke to in a couple of years. After getting things together, I called my mom to let her know I'd be doing this. She informed me he died. A year ago. FML

Today, I was texting a friend of mine. She mentioned it was her dad's birthday. I typed, "Tell him 'Happy Birthday' from me!" and as I pressed send, I remembered her dad was dead. FML

Today, after I'd saved up and frontloaded working hours for two weeks to ensure I'd have time and funds to go to a local show on my birthday, I received a call letting me know my father had a heart attack and was dying. He did pass away, at around 5AM on the morning of my birthday. FML

Today, my boyfriend threw out my old voicemail recorder, thinking it was junk. My father passed away years ago. I kept a recording of the last voicemail he'd left me on it so I'd always remember his voice. FML

Today, my mother casually told me she’s been seeing someone for the past 3 months. My dad passed away 2 years ago. They were together for 40 years. Suddenly she had to get off the phone with me because her “guy she’s been talking to” was calling. Hence I’m on the wine. FML

Today, my mom talked me into going to a funeral since my dad wouldn't go. It was for one of her classmates. When it was our time to view the casket, we paused in front of it for a second before my mom leans over to me and says, "What if I told you that was really your dad?" FML

Today, I got a missed call from my dad, who hasn't talked to me in months and has vowed not to have anything to do with me. I called him back excitedly and apologized for missing his call, and we had a 20-second conversation about how his phone accidentally dialed my number. FML

You never know why people do such things... my sister and her father didn't speak to each other for a few years and when her grand father died (her father's father) he said the rest of the family that he didn't want her to know. She finally discovered the whole story when she visited her cousin during holidays 7 months later. Merry Christmas! She did talk to her father after that, but it wasn't a make up conversation for sure.

So your father wasn't involved enough in your life to be in contact for several years at a time, yet you worship him so much you want to record a song for him. Your FML is that your mom saved you the heartache of knowing about the death of the man who has not been involved in your life. Sounds to me like nothing is lost.

I feel like there was a ton wrong with these relationships for you not you know he was gone. Not pointing any fingers, just saying the situation had to be bad. I want to say I’m sorry for your loss, but it sounds like that loss cake long ago. Sorry, nonetheless.
