Today, I've given my father-in-law a gift I've spent over 50$ on. After a long conversation about himself while I stood in the front doorway of his apartment, he shut the door in my face after telling me, "Well, thanks." without even opening the gifts I wrapped nicely just for him. FML

How ungracious and rude of him!! It doesn't matter if he likes them or not, when a person gives you something, you say thank you. Then you open it, and say something kind about it. When a family member does something kind, like OP did, it's rude and nasty to not open the gift while he or she is there.

Just because the gift is expensive does not mean it's good, and it doesn't make him obligated to like it
